How to file my weekly unemployment claim - Washington ESD system confusing me
I'm totally lost trying to figure out how to file my weekly unemployment claim with Washington ESD. I got approved for benefits last week but now I can't find where to actually submit my weekly claim on their website. I've been clicking around for an hour and nothing makes sense. The instructions they sent me mention logging into my account but once I'm in there it's just a bunch of confusing menus. Can someone walk me through this step by step? I'm worried I'm going to miss the deadline and lose my benefits.

You need to log into your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first, then navigate to the unemployment services section. Look for a button that says 'File Weekly Claim' or 'Submit Weekly Claim' - it should be pretty prominent once you're in the right section. Make sure you're filing for the correct week dates.

•Thanks! I found the SAW login but I'm still not seeing the weekly claim option. Is there a specific day of the week I need to file?

•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. So if it's Tuesday, you'd be filing for last week's claim period.

honestly the washington esd website is terrible, took me forever to figure it out too. once you login go to unemployment services then weekly claim filing. you have to answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, etc.

•What kind of questions do they ask? I'm nervous about answering something wrong.

•basic stuff like did you work any hours this week, did you look for jobs, were you available for work. just be honest

•And make sure you document your job search activities! Washington ESD requires you to search for work and keep records.

The weekly claim process is actually straightforward once you know the steps. After logging into SAW, go to Unemployment Services > File Weekly Claim. You'll answer about 8-10 questions regarding your work search activities, any earnings, and availability for work. Key things to remember: you must file between Sunday and the following Saturday for the previous week, you need to report ANY work even if it's just a few hours, and you must conduct job search activities as required.

•This is really helpful! How many job search activities do I need to do each week?

•For regular UI benefits, you need 3 job search activities per week. This can include applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records in case Washington ESD audits your claim.

I had the same problem when I started! If you're still having trouble getting through to file your claim, I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to Washington ESD agents by phone. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was super helpful when I needed to talk to someone about my weekly claim questions.

•Really? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days but can't get through. Does this actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me! I was getting hung up on constantly trying to call the regular way. This helped me actually reach an agent who walked me through the weekly claim process.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. Might have to check it out myself since I can never get through on the phone either.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE ON TIME! I missed one week because I was confused about the process and it was a nightmare trying to get that week reinstated. Washington ESD is very strict about filing deadlines.

Carmen Diaz
•Oh no, what happens if you miss the deadline? How long do you have to file?

•You have until Saturday night to file for the previous week. If you miss it, you have to call and explain why you were late - and they might not accept your reason.

•This happened to my brother too. He had to file an appeal just to get one missed week back. The system is unforgiving.

Pro tip: set up a recurring reminder on your phone to file every Sunday or Monday. The questions are basically the same each week, so once you do it a few times it becomes routine. The most important thing is being consistent and honest about your work search efforts.

•That's a great idea about the reminder! I'm definitely going to do that.

•Yes! I file mine every Sunday morning with my coffee. Makes it part of the routine.

also dont stress too much about the job search thing at first, they usually dont audit claims right away. but definitely keep some kind of record just in case

•Actually, I'd recommend taking the job search requirements seriously from day one. Washington ESD can audit at any time and if you can't provide documentation, they can create an overpayment.

•fair point, better safe than sorry i guess

The website interface is definitely not user-friendly. I remember spending hours trying to figure out where everything was when I first started filing. It gets easier after the first few times though.

•Yeah it's pretty confusing! I wish they made it more intuitive.

•The whole Washington ESD system feels like it was designed in the 90s and never updated.

One more tip - if you worked any hours during the week you're claiming, make sure you report the GROSS earnings, not net. And report it for the week you actually worked, not when you got paid.

•Good to know! I haven't worked yet but I might pick up some part-time hours soon.

•Yeah, part-time work is allowed but they'll reduce your weekly benefit amount based on what you earn. There's a formula they use.

Layla Mendes
•I think you can earn up to a certain amount before they start reducing benefits, but I'm not sure what the exact threshold is.

Has anyone had issues with the website timing out while filing? I've had it kick me out halfway through filling out my weekly claim a couple times.

•yeah that happened to me once, super annoying. i think there's a session timeout after like 20 minutes or something

•I always make sure to file first thing in the morning when the system is less busy. Seems to work better than evenings.

If you're really struggling with the online system, you might want to try calling. I know it's hard to get through, but sometimes talking to an actual person helps clarify things. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier might be worth trying if you can't get through the normal way.

•I'm definitely considering that if I keep having problems. The online system is just so confusing.

•I used Claimyr last month when I was having adjudication issues. It really does help you get through to an agent instead of sitting on hold forever.

Just want to add that you should print or screenshot your confirmation page after you file each week. It shows your claim was submitted successfully and has a confirmation number.

Carmen Diaz
•That's smart! I didn't think about keeping records of my submissions.

One last thing - make sure your contact information is updated in your Washington ESD account. They'll send important notices about your claim status and you don't want to miss them.
