Where to apply for unemployment online - Washington ESD website confusion
I got laid off yesterday and need to apply for unemployment benefits but I'm getting confused about where exactly to go online. I keep seeing different Washington ESD websites and I don't want to mess this up. Is it the secure.esd.wa.gov site or somewhere else? Also do I need to create a SAW account first or can I apply directly? Really stressed about getting this right since I have bills coming due.

You'll want to go to esd.wa.gov first, then look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. It will redirect you to the secure site at secure.esd.wa.gov. Yes, you'll need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months ready.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the employer names and dates?

•Just employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Pay stubs aren't required for the initial application but keep them handy in case Washington ESD needs them later.

I applied last month and it was pretty straightforward once I found the right page. The hardest part was remembering all my job details from the past year and a half. Make sure you apply as soon as possible because there's a waiting week and benefits are calculated from when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Good to know about the timing! How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•Mine took about 2 weeks but I had a pretty straightforward layoff situation. Some people wait longer if there are complications.

Just a heads up - if you have trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone later (and you probably will), I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me through to a real person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to someone at a government agency.

•I hear you on the principle of it, but when you're waiting weeks for answers and can't get through any other way, it's worth considering. Plus the stress relief of actually talking to someone who can help is huge.

THE WASHINGTON ESD WEBSITE IS HORRIBLE. I spent 3 hours trying to figure out where to apply and kept getting error messages. The SAW login system crashes constantly and their phone lines are always busy. This whole system is designed to make people give up before they get benefits.

•I understand the frustration, but the system does work if you're persistent. Try applying early in the morning or late at night when there's less traffic on the servers.

•I shouldn't have to time my unemployment application around server traffic. This is ridiculous.

same thing happened to me, got laid off and panicked about where to apply. turns out its not that complicated once you get started just takes forever to load

•Did you have any issues with the SAW account creation?

•nah that part was fine, just slow. the actual application took me like 45 minutes because i had to look up old employer info

For anyone reading this thread, here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov 2) Click 'Unemployment Benefits' 3) Click 'File a Claim' 4) Create your SAW account or log in 5) Complete the application with all required information. The system will guide you through each step. Make sure you file during your first week of unemployment to avoid delays.

•This is super helpful, thank you! One more question - do I need to start looking for work right away or can I wait until my claim is approved?

Arjun Kurti
•You should start your job search immediately. Washington requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week starting with your first claimed week. Keep detailed records in case they audit your search activities.

I remember when I applied for unemployment back in 2019 it was so much easier. Now with all the changes and security updates it feels like they made it harder on purpose. But yeah the main Washington ESD site is where you start.

•The pandemic definitely changed a lot of systems. More security but also more complexity unfortunately.

Update: I was able to get my application submitted! Took about an hour total including creating the SAW account. Thanks everyone for the help. Now I guess I wait to see if it gets approved. Fingers crossed!

•Great job getting it done! Remember to file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. The system should let you know when to start filing those.

•Excellent! And if you run into any issues with adjudication or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, don't hesitate to be persistent. The wait times are long but the staff can be helpful once you reach them.

Glad you got it figured out! I had a similar experience last year when I got laid off from my manufacturing job. The website was confusing at first but once you know where to go it's not too bad.

•Yeah I think I was just overwhelmed at first. The step by step instructions really helped.

For future reference, you can also apply by phone if the website isn't working, but good luck getting through. I tried for 3 days straight and never got past the busy signal. That's actually when I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - totally worth it to skip the phone nightmare.

•How exactly does Claimyr work? Do they just keep calling for you or something?

Diego Fisher
•Yeah basically they handle all the calling and waiting, then connect you when they get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. Check out their demo video, it explains it pretty well.

just applied last week myself, the whole process is pretty straightforward if you have all your info ready. worst part is waiting to hear back

•How long have you been waiting so far?

•about 5 days now, still showing pending. trying to be patient but its hard when you need the money

Make sure you keep checking your account regularly after applying. Sometimes Washington ESD will request additional information and if you don't respond quickly it can delay your claim for weeks. They don't always send email notifications so you have to log in and check.

•Good tip! How often should I be checking?

•I'd say every couple days at least, especially in the first few weeks after applying. Better safe than sorry.

The Washington ESD online system crashes so much I swear they do it on purpose to discourage claims. But persistence pays off eventually.

•The system definitely has capacity issues during peak times. Early morning applications tend to go smoother in my experience.

applied online about a month ago, still waiting for approval. apparently my case is in adjudication because my previous employer is disputing the claim. so frustrating

Leeann Blackstein
•Oh no, that sounds stressful. Are you able to talk to anyone at Washington ESD about it?

•tried calling but never get through. might look into that claimyr thing people keep mentioning

Pro tip: print out or screenshot your confirmation page after submitting your application. I forgot to do this and had to call later to verify my claim number, which took forever to get through.

The SAW account creation was the hardest part for me. Kept saying my information didn't match their records even though I was entering everything correctly. Had to try like 6 times before it worked.

Ryder Greene
•That's usually a formatting issue with addresses or names. Make sure you're entering everything exactly as it appears on your driver's license.

washington esd website works fine for me, never had any problems. maybe people just need to be more patient with government websites

•Easy to say when you're not desperate for benefits to pay rent. Some of us don't have the luxury of being patient.

Applied 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. Starting to wonder if I did something wrong during the application process. The waiting is the worst part.

•Three weeks isn't unusual unfortunately. If you're really concerned, try to get through to someone at Washington ESD to check on your claim status.

•This is exactly the situation where Claimyr saved me. When you're waiting weeks with no communication, being able to actually talk to someone who can look up your claim is invaluable.

One thing I wish someone had told me - make sure you apply for the right type of benefits. There's regular unemployment and then there's stuff like standby pay for certain situations. I applied for the wrong one initially and had to start over.

Leeann Blackstein
•How do you know which type to apply for?
0 coins
Sophia Miller
•Regular unemployment is for most people who lost their job through no fault of their own. Standby is more specific for temporary layoffs where you expect to be called back. The application should guide you but it's good to understand the difference.
