Where do you file unemployment in Washington - confused about the process
I got laid off last week and I'm totally lost about where to actually file for unemployment benefits. I know it's through Washington ESD but I can't figure out if I'm supposed to go somewhere in person or do it online? My friend said something about a website but when I Google it I get confused by all the different links. Can someone walk me through exactly where I need to go to file my initial claim? I'm really stressed about getting this done right and not missing any deadlines.

You file everything online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. There's no in-person filing anymore - it's all digital now. You'll need to create an account on their SecureAccess Washington (SAW) system first, then you can file your initial application through there.

•Thank you! Do I need any specific documents when I file online?

•Yes, have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. You'll also need bank info if you want direct deposit.

just go to the esd website and click apply for benefits, its pretty straightforward once you get started

•I tried that but got stuck on the employment verification part. Do they contact your former employer automatically?

Lindsey Fry
•yeah they send forms to your employer to verify everything, takes a few days usually

The official Washington ESD application portal is at esd.wa.gov/unemployment. Make sure you're on the legitimate state website - there are scam sites that look similar. The whole process is online now and has been since 2020. You'll create your account, file your initial claim, then file weekly claims every week to get paid.

•This is super helpful! How long does it usually take to hear back after filing?

•If there are no issues, you should get a determination letter within 2-3 weeks. Sometimes it takes longer if they need to do adjudication on your claim.

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I filed last year. The website would crash constantly and when I tried calling for help I could never get through to an actual person. If you run into problems trying to file online, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can help you get connected to ESD agents when you need to talk to someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before, is it legit? I'm always suspicious of third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate, they just help you get through the phone system when you need to actually talk to someone at ESD. I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•That's what I'm worried about! Did you eventually figure it out?

One important thing to remember - you need to file your initial claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's no waiting period in Washington, so don't delay. Once you file, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits.

•How do the weekly claims work? Do I file those on the same website?
0 coins
Leo Simmons
•Yes, same website. You'll log into your account every week and answer questions about your job search activities and any work you did that week.

I filed mine about 6 months ago and the whole process was actually pretty smooth. The website worked fine for me and I got approved within 3 weeks. Just make sure you have accurate employment dates and wage information.

•You're lucky! I filed around the same time and mine got held up for over a month because of some issue with my previous employer.

James Maki
•Oh no, what kind of issue? Did you have to appeal or anything?

Arnav Bengali
•They said my employer disputed the reason for separation. Had to do a phone interview and everything.

Make sure you keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Washington requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and you have to report them on your weekly claims. Keep a log with company names, dates, and how you contacted them.

•Wait, I have to start looking for work immediately? I thought there was like a grace period.

Cole Roush
•Nope, job search requirements start right away in Washington. You can use WorkSourceWA.com to help track your activities.

Does anyone know if you can file unemployment if you were a contractor? I was technically 1099 but worked for the same company for 2 years.
0 coins
Kayla Morgan
•That's tricky - 1099 contractors usually don't qualify for regular unemployment benefits. But there might be exceptions depending on how much control the company had over your work.

Saleem Vaziri
•Hmm, they pretty much controlled everything I did. Maybe I should still try to file?
0 coins
Kayla Morgan
•Definitely worth trying. Worst case they deny it and you can appeal if you think they misclassified your employment status.

btw make sure you use a secure internet connection when filing, dont do it on public wifi since youre entering personal info

•Good point, I hadn't thought about that security aspect.

The Washington ESD system has gotten so much better over the past few years. I remember when it used to take months to get through to anyone, but now the online system is pretty reliable. Just be patient if there are delays - they process thousands of claims every week.

•idk about that, i still think their phone system is terrible when you need help

•That's true, the phone support is still really hard to reach. But for basic filing, the website works well.

If you do run into issues and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but when my benefits got stopped for some reason I couldn't figure out online, they helped me get through to an agent who fixed it in like 10 minutes.

•How exactly does that work? Do they call for you or something?

Jasmine Hancock
•They help you get through the automated phone system and connect you with an actual ESD representative. Check out their demo video if you're curious about the process.

One more tip - take screenshots of everything when you file your claim. Sometimes the system glitches and you'll want proof that you submitted everything correctly and on time.

Lilly Curtis
•Smart idea! I'll definitely do that.

Cole Roush
•Yes! And save any confirmation numbers or emails they send you. You'll need those reference numbers if you have to call later.

Also don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication - it sounds scary but it just means they need to verify some information. Mine was in adjudication for 3 weeks but eventually got approved with back pay for the whole period.

•What triggers adjudication? I want to avoid that if possible.

•Usually it's when there's a dispute about why you lost your job, or if you had multiple employers, or sometimes just random verification checks.

washington esd really needs to improve their customer service though. i spent weeks trying to get help with my claim and kept getting different answers from different people

I'm actually a former ESD employee and I can tell you that the online filing system really is the best way to go. The staff there are doing their best but they're overwhelmed with the volume of calls. If you can handle your issue online, that's always going to be faster than trying to call.

Lilly Curtis
•That's really good insight, thank you! Any other insider tips for filing?
0 coins
Niko Ramsey
•Just be completely honest and accurate with all your information. Double-check dates and dollar amounts before submitting. Most delays happen because of simple errors in the application.

For anyone else reading this thread, here's the direct link to apply: esd.wa.gov/unemployment/apply-for-benefits. Don't get sidetracked by other websites that might charge you fees to file - the state service is completely free.

I helped my dad file his claim last month after he got laid off from his job of 15 years. The process was actually pretty straightforward once we got started. The hardest part was gathering all his employment history information. Make sure you have contact info for all your employers from the past 18 months before you start.
0 coins
Lilly Curtis
•How far back do they typically ask for employment history?
0 coins
Kristin Frank
•They ask for 18 months of work history, but it's good to have 2 years just in case they need more information for your benefit calculation.

Just want to echo what others have said about that Claimyr service - I used it when I couldn't get through to ESD about a payment issue and it actually worked. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person and the regular phone lines are impossible.

•Did it cost a lot to use?

•It wasn't free but it was worth it to get my issue resolved quickly instead of spending weeks trying to get through on my own.
