How do I file for unemployment with Washington ESD - completely lost on where to start

I just got laid off yesterday and have never filed for unemployment before. I keep seeing references to Washington ESD but I'm honestly not even sure what that stands for or where I'm supposed to go to apply. Do I need to go to a physical office or is this all online now? Also heard something about weekly claims but don't know what that means. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? I'm really stressed about this whole process and don't want to mess anything up.

Washington ESD stands for Employment Security Department - that's the state agency that handles unemployment insurance (UI). You'll file everything online at their website. The basic steps are: 1) Apply for benefits online, 2) Wait for approval, 3) File weekly claims to get paid. You'll need your SSN, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation from your job.

Thank you! Do you know what the website address is? I want to make sure I'm going to the right place.

0 coins

It's esd.wa.gov - make sure you're on the official Washington state site. There are scam sites out there.

The application process is pretty straightforward but can take some time. You'll create an account on their secure portal and answer questions about your work history, wages, and why you're unemployed. After you apply, Washington ESD will review your claim which can take 1-3 weeks. Once approved, you'll need to file a weekly claim every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work.

What kind of questions do they ask about work history? I worked for three different companies in the past year.

0 coins

They'll ask for employer names, dates of employment, wages earned, and reason you left each job. Having your pay stubs or W2s handy will make it easier.

Just went through this myself last month. One thing to know is that you might not be able to get through on the phone if you have questions - their call volume is insane. I tried calling for weeks and kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? I'm already worried about money.

0 coins

It was worth it for me because I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and needed to talk to someone. Way better than spending hours trying to call on my own.

0 coins

make sure u apply as soon as possible because there's a waiting week where u dont get paid anyway. also dont forget to do the job search stuff or they'll cut u off

0 coins

What's the job search requirement? How many jobs do I need to apply for?

0 coins

i think its 3 jobs per week but check their website to be sure

0 coins

The job search requirement is actually 3 work search activities per week, not necessarily 3 job applications. You can attend job fairs, do skills training, networking events, or apply for jobs. You need to keep a log of your activities in case Washington ESD asks for it during an audit.

0 coins

Do I need to submit this log every week or just keep it for my records?

0 coins

Just keep it for your records. You only submit it if they request it during a review.

0 coins

OMG the website is so confusing! I tried to apply last week and got lost in all the forms. Do I really need to list every single job I've had? What if I can't remember exact dates?

0 coins

You only need jobs from the last 18 months for the base period calculation. If you don't have exact dates, use your best estimate - they mainly care about the quarters you worked and wages earned.

0 coins

Thanks, that makes it less overwhelming. I was trying to remember jobs from like 5 years ago!

0 coins

Another heads up - after you file your initial claim, you might go into something called 'adjudication' if there are any questions about your eligibility. This can delay your benefits for weeks while they investigate. Common reasons include quitting vs being laid off, misconduct allegations, or wage disputes.

0 coins

I was definitely laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

0 coins

That should be straightforward then. Just make sure you answer all questions accurately and provide any documentation they request.

0 coins

The system has gotten better since COVID but it's still not perfect. Sometimes the website goes down or glitches out. If that happens, don't panic - just try again later. Also make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week or you'll lose those benefits permanently.

0 coins

When do I file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?

0 coins

You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I usually do mine on Sunday mornings. The deadline is the following Saturday.

Been on unemployment twice in the past few years unfortunately. One thing people don't realize is that your benefit amount is based on your wages from over a year ago, not your most recent job. They use something called a 'base period' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed.

0 coins

That's confusing. So if I made more money at my recent job, that doesn't count?

0 coins

Not for the standard base period, but you might qualify for an alternate base period that includes more recent wages. Washington ESD will automatically check both when you apply.

0 coins

Just a warning - the approval process can be really slow right now. I applied 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. If you run into delays and need to speak with someone, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me too. Saved me hours of trying to get through on the phone.

0 coins

Did you have any issues with your claim or was it just taking a long time?

0 coins

No issues, just slow processing. The agent I finally reached said they're still dealing with higher than normal volume.

0 coins

Make sure you understand the difference between being 'able and available' for work versus being on 'standby' status. If you're temporarily laid off and expecting to be called back, that's standby. If you're permanently separated and actively looking for new work, that's regular UI benefits.

0 coins

I think I'm permanently separated since they eliminated my position entirely. So that would be regular benefits?

0 coins

Yes, sounds like regular UI benefits. You'll need to be actively searching for work and report your job search activities.

0 coins

the worst part is when they ask for ID verification and then take forever to process it. happened to my brother and he didnt get paid for like 6 weeks

0 coins

What kind of ID verification do they require?

0 coins

usually drivers license and social security card or passport. sometimes they want more if theres any questions

0 coins

Don't forget that unemployment benefits are taxable income! You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return. I learned this the hard way and owed a bunch of money at tax time.

0 coins

Oh wow, I didn't know that. How much do they typically withhold for taxes?

0 coins

I think it's 10% federal tax withholding. You can set this up when you file your weekly claims.

0 coins

Also be prepared for the fact that unemployment benefits aren't that much money. In Washington, the maximum weekly benefit is around $844 but most people get less than that. It's meant to be temporary assistance, not a full salary replacement.

0 coins

How do they calculate how much you get?

0 coins

It's based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period, divided by 26, plus dependents allowances if you have kids.

0 coins

The whole system is a nightmare honestly. I've been trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD for months about an overpayment notice that I think is wrong. The online appeal system is just as confusing as everything else.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - spent way too much time trying to navigate their phone system on my own.

0 coins

Yeah I might have to try that. This is getting ridiculous.

0 coins

One more tip - if you have any union benefits or severance pay, that might affect your unemployment eligibility or delay when you can start collecting. Make sure you report all of that accurately when you apply.

0 coins

I got two weeks severance pay. Does that mean I have to wait two weeks to apply?

0 coins

Not necessarily wait to apply, but it might affect when your benefits start. The system will calculate that for you when you file.

0 coins

just start the application and see what happens. you can always call if you get confused but good luck getting through lol

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the help. I feel way less overwhelmed about this now.

0 coins

no problem! we've all been there

0 coins

The most important thing is to be completely honest on your application. If they find out later that you weren't truthful about anything, they can make you pay back all the benefits plus penalties. It's not worth the risk.

0 coins

Definitely planning to be completely honest. I don't want any problems down the road.

0 coins

Good plan. Better to have a delay in processing than to deal with fraud allegations later.

0 coins

Also remember you can usually collect benefits for up to 26 weeks in Washington, but you need to keep filing those weekly claims and meeting all the requirements. Miss a week and you lose that week's benefits forever.

0 coins

Good to know. I'll set a reminder on my phone to file every week.

0 coins

Smart idea. I use Sunday morning as my routine - coffee and weekly claim filing.

0 coins

Washington state also has extended benefits sometimes during high unemployment periods, but I don't think those are available right now. The regular 26 weeks is what you can count on.

0 coins

Hopefully I'll find something before then anyway. Thanks again everyone for all the advice!

0 coins

Good luck with your application! Feel free to post back here if you run into any issues.
