How to sign up for unemployment in Washington - complete beginner guide needed
I just got laid off from my retail job yesterday and have never applied for unemployment before. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but I'm completely lost on where to start. Do I just go to their website? What information do I need to have ready? Also heard something about having to do weekly claims - what does that mean? Any step-by-step help would be really appreciated since I'm stressing about paying rent next month.

First step is creating your account on Washington ESD's website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates worked, and gross wages). The initial application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•Thanks! Do I need exact dates or just months? I worked at three different places in the last year and a half.

•Exact dates if you have them, but months will work. Washington ESD will verify with your employers anyway. Just be as accurate as possible.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. This is basically confirming you're still unemployed and looking for work. You can do this online or by phone, but online is way easier.

•How long does it usually take to get approved? I filed last week and haven't heard anything yet.

Laila Prince
•Usually 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim. Sometimes longer if they need to verify something with your employer.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington so you won't get paid for your first week anyway, but the sooner you file the sooner that clock starts ticking.

•What's a waiting week? Does that mean I have to wait a whole week before I can even apply?

Dominique Adams
•No, you can apply right away. The waiting week means you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment, but you still need to file a weekly claim for it.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my application. Their phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent - check out claimyr.com. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm trying not to spend money I don't have right now.

•I was in the same boat but it was worth it to actually talk to someone and get my questions answered instead of waiting weeks wondering what was happening with my claim.

You'll also need to register with WorkSource (that's Washington's job search system) and start looking for work right away. They require you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log.

•Do I have to register with WorkSource before I can get benefits?

TommyKapitz
•You have to register within a certain timeframe after filing, but you don't have to wait for that to complete your initial application.

•The job search requirement is 3 activities per week, not necessarily 3 different employers. You can count things like updating your resume or attending job fairs.

Be prepared for the process to take forever. I applied 3 weeks ago and my claim is still showing 'pending' with no explanation. Every time I try to call I get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour.

•That's frustrating! Have you tried calling at different times of day? I had better luck calling right when they opened at 8am.

•I've tried morning, afternoon, even tried the callback feature but never got called back.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you answer all the questions honestly on your application. If you worked part-time while receiving benefits or had any other income, report it. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you could end up with an overpayment to deal with.

•What if I do some freelance work while I'm looking for a full-time job? Do I need to report that too?

Payton Black
•Yes, you need to report ALL income when you file your weekly claims. They'll deduct it from your benefits but you won't necessarily lose everything.

The Washington ESD website can be confusing but there's actually a pretty good step-by-step guide if you look for it. Also make sure you keep checking your account online because sometimes they send you tasks you need to complete that aren't obvious.

•What kind of tasks? Like additional paperwork?

•Could be anything - verification of identity, proof of work authorization, sometimes they want you to complete a phone interview. Just check your account every few days.

Don't forget you might be able to get expedited benefits if you're in a really tight spot financially. There's an emergency processing option but I think you have to call to request it.

•How do you qualify for expedited processing? I really need to get something coming in soon.

Summer Green
•I'm not 100% sure of the requirements but I think it's for people facing eviction or having utilities shut off. Worth asking about when you call.

If you get stuck during the application process, don't give up! The system times out pretty quickly so save your progress frequently. I had to start over twice because I got distracted and the session expired.

•Good tip! How long do you have before it times out?

•I think it's like 20-30 minutes of inactivity but don't quote me on that. Just hit save whenever you can.

One thing that helped me was having my pay stubs ready before I started the application. Washington ESD asks for your gross wages for each employer and it's much easier if you have the exact numbers rather than trying to estimate.

•What if you don't have pay stubs from a job? My last employer only did direct deposit and didn't give us physical stubs.

•Check if they have an online portal where you can access them, or call HR. You could also use your tax documents if you have them.

Just went through this process last month. The whole thing took about 4 weeks from application to getting my first payment. Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is still pending - you can't go back and file them later.

Sadie Benitez
•Wait, so I should file weekly claims before my application is even approved?
0 coins
Dana Doyle
•Yes! You file weekly claims for every week you're unemployed, starting with your first week. If your claim gets approved, you'll get paid for all those weeks.

Has anyone had luck with the virtual assistant on the Washington ESD website? I tried using it but it just kept giving me the same generic answers that weren't helpful for my specific situation.

Manny Lark
•The virtual assistant is pretty useless for anything complicated. It's only good for like basic questions about hours or finding forms.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to actually talk to a real person. The automated stuff just wasn't cutting it for my questions.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble with the online application, you can actually start it over the phone. The wait times are horrible but sometimes the phone system works better than the website.

Sadie Benitez
•Is there any advantage to doing it online vs phone?
0 coins
Rita Jacobs
•Online is faster if it works properly and you can save your progress. Phone takes forever but sometimes it's your only option if the website is acting up.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's a total cap on how much you can receive during your benefit year.

Ben Cooper
•How do they calculate how much you get per week? Is it based on your last job's pay?
0 coins
Khalid Howes
•It's based on your earnings during your 'base period' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. Washington ESD calculates it automatically.

Whatever you do, don't lie or try to hide anything on your application. Washington ESD cross-references everything with your employers and other agencies. If they catch you being dishonest, you could be disqualified and have to pay back any benefits you received.

Sadie Benitez
•What happens if you make an honest mistake on the application?
0 coins
Naila Gordon
•Honest mistakes can usually be corrected, but you need to contact them as soon as you realize the error. They can tell the difference between a mistake and intentional fraud.

I wish someone had told me about keeping detailed records from day one. Save every email, write down every phone call, keep copies of everything you submit. If something goes wrong later, you'll need all that documentation.

•This is so important! I had an issue with my claim and having all my records saved me weeks of trying to reconstruct what happened.

•Good advice! I'll start a folder right now for all my unemployment stuff.

The hardest part for me was the waiting and not knowing what was happening. Try to be patient but also stay on top of your claim status. Check your online account regularly and don't be afraid to call if something seems wrong.

•How often should you check your account? I don't want to be obsessive but I also don't want to miss something important.

•I checked mine every couple days, especially after filing my weekly claim. That way if there were any issues I could catch them quickly.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD by phone, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Worth checking out if you're really stuck and need to talk to someone.

Sadie Benitez
•I might have to try that if I run into problems. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly though.

•Yeah, definitely try the normal routes first. But it's good to know there are options if you get stuck.

Last thing - don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to be actively looking for work and keeping track of your job search activities. Washington ESD can ask to see your records at any time.

•Good luck! The process can be frustrating but stick with it. Once you get through the initial setup, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward.
