Where do you file for unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about the process

I just got laid off yesterday and I'm completely lost on where to file for unemployment benefits. I've never had to do this before and I'm seeing different websites when I Google it. Is there a specific Washington ESD website I should be using? I don't want to accidentally file on some scam site or mess this up. Can someone walk me through the basic steps of where to go and what I need to have ready?

You need to go to the official Washington Employment Security Department website at secure.esd.wa.gov. That's the only legitimate place to file your initial claim. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment.

Thank you! I was worried about using the wrong site. Do I need to gather pay stubs too or just the employer info?

0 coins

Pay stubs help but aren't required for the initial filing. Washington ESD will verify your wages directly with employers. Just make sure you have accurate dates and employer contact info.

0 coins

definitely use the official ESD site - i made the mistake of clicking on some google ad once and it was a total scam site trying to charge me to file

0 coins

Yikes, that's exactly what I was worried about. Good to know the official site is free.

0 coins

Yeah there's tons of fake unemployment sites out there. Always look for the .gov in the URL.

If you're having trouble getting through on the website, you can also call Washington ESD but honestly the phone lines are swamped. I spent 3 hours on hold last week just to ask a simple question. There's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to ESD agents faster - check out claimyr.com. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth it if you get stuck.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind if I can't get through online. Hopefully the website works for the initial filing though.

0 coins

Never heard of that service but makes sense. The ESD phone system is absolutely terrible to navigate.

0 coins

The Washington ESD online system usually works fine for initial claims. Just make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. You can't get benefits for the week you file, only for weeks after that. Also be prepared to do weekly claims every week - you can't just file once and forget about it.

0 coins

Oh I didn't know about the weekly claims part. So I have to log in every week to continue getting benefits?

0 coins

Exactly. Every week you need to file a weekly claim certifying that you're still unemployed and looking for work. Miss a week and your benefits stop.

0 coins

And don't forget the job search requirements! You need to log at least 3 job search activities per week in WorkSourceWA.

THIS SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!!! I've been trying to figure out unemployment for 2 weeks and every website says something different. Why can't they just make this simple? My neighbor said something about ID.me verification too - is that part of filing?

0 coins

ID.me is for identity verification, yes. Washington ESD uses it to prevent fraud. You'll need to verify your identity through ID.me as part of the process.

0 coins

UGH more steps. This is already overwhelming and I haven't even started yet.

0 coins

I feel you on this being confusing. Hopefully once we get through the initial setup it gets easier.

Quick tip - if you worked in multiple states in the past year, you might need to file in a different state than Washington. Check which state you earned the most wages in during your base period.

0 coins

I only worked in Washington so I think I'm good there. But how do I know what my base period is?

0 coins

Your base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file now in January 2025, it would be July 2023 through June 2024.

0 coins

been there done that - the whole process took me about 30 minutes online and then I had to wait like 2 weeks for my claim to get approved. make sure you have all your employer info ready before you start or you'll have to keep stopping to look stuff up

0 coins

Two weeks to get approved? Is that normal or did you have some kind of issue?

0 coins

pretty normal from what i heard, they have to verify everything with your employers

0 coins

Don't forget you can also file by calling the claims center, but like someone else mentioned, the phone lines are absolutely brutal. I tried calling for 3 days straight and never got through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected to an agent in 15 minutes. Saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

Was the Claimyr thing expensive? I'm already unemployed so trying to watch my spending.

0 coins

It was worth it for me since I was wasting so much time trying to call. They focus on getting you connected rather than charging a lot.

0 coins

I'd try the online route first before paying for anything. Most people can file without needing to call.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't wait! I waited like a week thinking I should look for a job first and then found out I lost a whole week of benefits because of it. File immediately even if you think you might find work soon.

0 coins

Good point. I was thinking of waiting until next week but I'll do it today.

0 coins

Yeah you can always cancel your claim if you find work right away, but you can't backdate it if you wait too long.

0 coins

The secure.esd.wa.gov site is definitely the right place. One thing that tripped me up was having to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first. That's separate from your ESD account but you need it to log in. Just be patient with the whole process - it's a lot of steps but it works.

0 coins

So I need TWO accounts? A SAW account AND an ESD account?

0 coins

Kind of. SAW is just the login system for all Washington state services. Once you're logged in through SAW, you can access your ESD unemployment account.

0 coins

This is why the system is so confusing. Too many different logins and websites.

I filed my claim online last month and it was pretty straightforward once I got started. The hardest part was remembering all my employment dates. Tip: if you have old W-2s handy, those make it much easier to get the employer info right.

0 coins

I should have my 2024 W-2 coming soon. Should I wait for that or just file with what I remember?

0 coins

File now with what you have. You can always update information later, but you don't want to delay getting your claim started.

0 coins

Just went through this process myself. After you file your initial claim online, you'll get a letter in the mail with your benefit amount and instructions for filing weekly claims. The whole thing is pretty automated once you get it set up. Don't overthink it!

0 coins

How long did it take to get the letter? I want to make sure I'm watching for it.

0 coins

About a week for me. They also send notifications through your online account so check that regularly too.

0 coins

The website can be slow during peak times (like Monday mornings when everyone's filing their weekly claims), so if it's not loading well, try again later in the day or evening. Also make sure you're using an updated browser - the site doesn't work well with old versions of Internet Explorer.

0 coins

Good tip about the timing. I'll try to file during off-peak hours.

0 coins

Yeah I learned that the hard way. Tried to file on a Monday morning and the site kept timing out.

0 coins

One more thing - if your claim goes into 'adjudication' status, don't panic. It just means they need to verify something about your employment or eligibility. It can take a few weeks but most claims get approved eventually. That's another situation where having a way to reach an ESD agent directly through something like Claimyr might be helpful.

0 coins

What kind of things trigger adjudication? I want to avoid that if possible.

0 coins

Usually things like if you were fired, quit your job, or if they can't verify your wages. Sometimes it's just random verification. Not much you can do to avoid it.

0 coins

Bottom line: go to secure.esd.wa.gov, create your accounts, file your claim, and then be prepared to file weekly claims every week. It's not as scary as it seems once you get started. You got this!

0 coins

Thanks everyone! This thread has been super helpful. I'm going to file my claim this afternoon.

0 coins

Good luck! Feel free to come back and ask questions if you run into any issues.

0 coins

Just wanted to add one more tip that helped me - before you start filing, write down all your employer information on a piece of paper first. Include company names, addresses, phone numbers, your start/end dates, and your supervisor's name if you remember it. Having it all written out beforehand makes the online form much faster to fill out. Also, if you moved recently, make sure your address is updated in the system since that's where they'll mail important documents. The whole process really isn't as bad as it seems when you're prepared!

0 coins

That's really smart advice about writing everything down first! I was just planning to wing it but you're right - having all the employer info organized beforehand will save a lot of time and prevent mistakes. I didn't think about the address thing either, so I'll double check that. This whole thread has given me so much confidence that I can actually do this process successfully.
