Where do you file for unemployment in Washington - confused about the process
I just got laid off last week and I'm totally lost about where to file for unemployment benefits. I've been searching online but there are so many different websites and I don't want to accidentally use some scam site. Can someone tell me the official place where you file for unemployment in Washington? I heard there's something called Washington ESD but I'm not sure if that's right or how to access it. Really need to get this sorted out ASAP since my last paycheck was Friday.

You file through Washington ESD (Employment Security Department). The official website is esd.wa.gov - that's the only legitimate site to use. You'll need to create an account on their Secure Access Washington (SAW) portal first, then you can file your initial claim online.

•Thank you! Is there anything I need to have ready before I start filing?

•Yes, have your Social Security number, driver's license, employment history for the past 18 months including employer names and addresses, and your most recent pay stub ready.

The Washington ESD website can be really confusing to navigate. I spent hours trying to figure out where to actually start my claim when I got laid off in December.

•Once you're on esd.wa.gov, look for the 'Apply for Benefits' button on the main page. It's pretty prominent but the site has a lot of other information that can be distracting.

•Yeah that's exactly what happened to me - got overwhelmed by all the different sections and links everywhere.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask the same question but gave up after being on hold for 2 hours. Their phone system is absolutely terrible - kept getting disconnected. Finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD in like 15 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration!

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another way to waste money?

•It definitely works - I was skeptical too but desperate after spending entire days trying to reach Washington ESD. The agent I talked to was able to walk me through the whole filing process over the phone.

•Interesting, might have to try that if I run into issues with my claim. The Washington ESD phone lines are notoriously bad.

Just to clarify the process: you file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov, then you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't miss those weekly filings or your benefits will stop. Also, you need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search requirements.

•How soon after filing do you typically hear back about whether you're approved?
0 coins
NebulaNomad
•Usually takes about 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. If it goes into adjudication, it can take much longer - sometimes months.

make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. there's no waiting period in washington but you don't get paid for the time before you file

•Good to know, thanks! I'll file today then.

•Actually, Washington does have a one-week waiting period before benefits start, but you're right that filing early is important.

The whole Washington ESD system is a joke. Took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and that was with no complications. They make it as difficult as possible on purpose.

•I feel you on that. The bureaucracy is insane but unfortunately we don't have much choice.

•While the system can be frustrating, most straightforward claims are processed within the standard timeframe. Delays usually happen when there are questions about eligibility or work separation.

Don't forget you need to have worked enough hours to qualify. I think it's something like 680 hours in your base period or you won't get anything.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
•Close - you need at least 680 hours of covered employment AND earnings of at least $1,300 in your highest-earning quarter during the base period.

•Thanks for the correction! The eligibility requirements are pretty specific.

I'm in the same boat - just got let go from my restaurant job. Is the process different for food service workers or is it all the same through Washington ESD?

NebulaNomad
•Same process for everyone through esd.wa.gov. Your employer should have been paying into the unemployment insurance system regardless of industry.

•Perfect, that makes it easier. Was worried there might be different rules for tipped employees.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use any third-party sites that claim to help you file. There are scammers out there. Only use the official Washington ESD website.

•Good warning! How can you tell if a site is legitimate?

Chloe Wilson
•Look for .gov in the URL. Any legitimate government site will have that domain. Also never pay anyone to file your unemployment claim - it's free through Washington ESD.

The Washington ESD online system usually works best early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are using it. I always had trouble during business hours.

•That's a great tip! I noticed the same thing when I was filing my weekly claims.

When I filed last year, I had to upload documents to verify my identity. Make sure you have a clear photo of your driver's license and Social Security card ready, just in case they ask for additional verification.

Amina Sy
•Did they ask for that right away or later in the process?

•It was about a week after I filed my initial claim. Got an email saying I needed to upload identity documents to continue processing.

Been trying to reach Washington ESD for three days straight about my claim status. Their phone system is absolutely useless - either busy signal or hang up after hours of waiting. Might have to try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Definitely recommend it! Way better than wasting your whole day calling Washington ESD directly. At least with Claimyr you know you'll actually talk to someone.

Pro tip: when you create your Secure Access Washington account, write down your username and password somewhere safe. I got locked out of mine and it was a nightmare trying to reset everything.

Nia Thompson
•Yes! And don't use the same password you use elsewhere. Washington ESD has specific password requirements that are different from most sites.

Once you file, you'll get a monetary determination letter in the mail showing how much you can receive per week and for how long. Keep that letter - you'll need the information on it.

Amina Sy
•How long does it usually take to get that letter?

Mateo Rodriguez
•Usually within 7-10 business days of filing your initial claim, assuming no issues with processing.

Make sure to keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Washington has work search requirements and you need to log everything in WorkSource Washington.
0 coins
NebulaNomad
•Exactly right. You need to make at least 3 work search activities per week and keep detailed records. Don't wait to start looking - begin immediately after filing.

GalacticGladiator
•What counts as a work search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, skills training - there's a whole list on the WorkSource Washington website.

I filed back in November and still waiting for my adjudication to complete. Washington ESD is incredibly slow when there are any questions about your eligibility.

•What's your adjudication about? Mine was for a job separation issue and took 8 weeks.

•They're reviewing my work history because I had multiple part-time jobs. Been in adjudication for 6 weeks now with no updates.

The most important thing is to be completely honest on your application. Any false information will come back to bite you and could result in overpayment penalties or fraud charges.

If you run into technical issues with the website, try using a different browser or clearing your cache. The Washington ESD site can be finicky sometimes.

•I had to use Internet Explorer of all things to get the site working properly when I filed mine!

Just wanted to add that if you have direct deposit set up, payments usually come on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Without direct deposit, you'll get a debit card in the mail which takes longer.

Jamal Anderson
•The debit card option has fees for some transactions, so direct deposit is definitely better if you can do it.

For anyone else reading this thread later - you can also file by phone if absolutely necessary, but the online system at esd.wa.gov is much faster and available 24/7. Phone filing is only recommended if you have no internet access.

•Good point, though getting through by phone is nearly impossible these days. That's why services like Claimyr are so helpful - they can actually get you connected to speak with someone at Washington ESD when you need help.
