Where to file unemployment claim in Washington - need help with ESD application process
I just got laid off yesterday and have no idea where to file unemployment benefits. I keep seeing different websites and I'm worried about filing in the wrong place. Is there an official Washington ESD website where I'm supposed to apply? Also heard something about needing a SecureAccess Washington account but not sure if that's separate or part of the same process. Really stressed about getting this right since I need benefits to start ASAP. Can someone point me in the right direction?

You need to go to the official Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov to file your initial claim. Don't use any third-party sites that might charge you fees. The application is completely free through Washington ESD directly.

•Thank you! Is that the same place where I'll file my weekly claims later?

•Yes, once your claim is approved you'll use the same esd.wa.gov portal for your weekly claim filings.

You'll definitely need a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first. That's your login for all Washington state services including unemployment. Create that at secureaccess.wa.gov before trying to file your claim.

•Do I create the SAW account first or can I do it as part of filing the unemployment claim?

•Create it first, it makes the whole process smoother. The unemployment application will ask you to log in with your SAW credentials.

Just went through this process myself last month. Here's the step by step: 1) Create SecureAccess Washington account at secureaccess.wa.gov 2) Go to esd.wa.gov and click 'Apply for Benefits' 3) Login with your SAW account 4) Complete the unemployment application. Make sure you have your work history for the last 18 months ready including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment.

•This is super helpful! How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•Mine took about 2 weeks but I had a straightforward layoff situation. If there are any issues with your separation from work it might go into adjudication which takes longer.

Been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and their phone lines are impossible. Found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call on my own.

Chloe Harris
•Really? How does that work exactly? Do they charge you to make the call?

Sean Murphy
•They handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting the busy signal.

•That actually sounds pretty useful. I've been trying to reach them about my adjudication for weeks with no luck.

MAKE SURE you file within the first week after your last day of work! There's no benefit for the week you don't file, so don't wait around thinking about it.

•Oh no, I was laid off yesterday (Thursday). Should I file today or wait until Sunday when the new week starts?
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
•File as soon as possible! The waiting week doesn't apply in Washington anymore so you'll get benefits starting from your first eligible week.

The whole system is a nightmare honestly. Took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more documentation. Have your pay stubs, separation notice, and any other paperwork ready before you even start the application.

•What kind of documentation did they ask for? I want to be prepared.

Nia Davis
•They wanted verification of my last wages, proof of my job search activities, and documentation about why I was laid off. Just be ready for anything.

Also remember you'll need to do weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is being processed. Don't skip any weeks or you'll lose those benefits permanently.

•When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit my initial application?
0 coins
Mateo Martinez
•Yes, you should file your first weekly claim for the week you submit your initial application. The system will tell you when your next weekly claim is due.

One more thing - when you're filling out the application, be very specific about the reason for your separation. If you put down the wrong reason it could trigger an adjudication investigation that will delay your benefits.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing. Should I select 'lack of work' as the reason?
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Yes, 'lack of work' is correct for a layoff situation. That should process without any issues.

The job search requirements start right away too. You need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. Don't wait until you get your first payment to start looking for work.

•Where do I keep track of my job search activities? Is there a form on the Washington ESD website?
0 coins
Zara Khan
•Yes, there's a job search log you can access through your esd.wa.gov account. You can also use WorkSourceWA.com to track some of your activities.

Just a heads up that the website sometimes crashes during peak times, especially Sunday evenings when everyone is filing their weekly claims. Try filing early in the morning or late at night if you run into technical issues.

•Good to know! Is there a deadline for weekly claims or can I file any time during the week?

QuantumQueen
•You have until Saturday night to file your weekly claim for that week. I usually file mine on Monday mornings to avoid the weekend rush.

Don't forget to register with WorkSource Washington too. It's required for unemployment benefits and you'll need to maintain an active job search through their system.

•Is that worksourcewa.com? Do I need to register there before filing my unemployment claim?

Aisha Rahman
•You can register after filing your initial claim but don't wait too long. It's part of your ongoing requirements to receive benefits.

Pro tip: take screenshots of every page as you complete your application. If there are any technical glitches you'll have proof of what information you submitted.

Chloe Harris
•That's smart! Have you had issues with the system losing information?

Anastasia Popov
•It happened to me once during peak hours. Had to start over but at least I had my answers saved from the screenshots.

If your claim goes into adjudication don't panic. It just means they need to verify some information about your employment or separation. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's under review.

•How will I know if my claim goes into adjudication? Will I get notified?

•You'll see it in your account status and usually get a notice in the mail or through your online account. Just be patient and respond to any requests for information quickly.

If you do need to contact Washington ESD about your claim and can't get through on the phone, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really works. Worth checking out their website claimyr.com if you get stuck trying to reach an agent.

•I'm definitely going to look into that. Spent 4 hours on hold yesterday and never got through.

•Yeah the phone system is brutal. This way you don't have to sit there listening to hold music all day.

Make sure your address is correct in your SAW account before filing. If Washington ESD sends important notices to the wrong address you could miss deadlines for appeals or other requirements.
0 coins
Chloe Harris
•Can I change my address later if I move while receiving benefits?
0 coins
Carmen Flores
•Yes but you need to update it immediately in both your SAW account and your unemployment account. Don't let mail get sent to old addresses.

The whole process is pretty straightforward if you have all your information ready. Don't overthink it, just make sure you answer all questions honestly and completely.

•Thank you everyone! I feel much more confident about filing now. Going to create my SAW account tonight and file tomorrow morning.

•Good luck! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you get into the routine of weekly claims it becomes second nature.

One last thing - keep copies of everything! Print or save PDFs of your application confirmation, weekly claim confirmations, and any correspondence from Washington ESD. You never know when you might need to reference something.

Chloe Harris
•Great advice! Should I print the weekly claim confirmations every week?

•I do, just to be safe. Only takes a few seconds and it's saved me when I needed to prove I filed on time.

Welcome to the unemployment club nobody wants to join! But seriously, don't stress too much about the process. Washington ESD has gotten better at processing claims since the pandemic mess.

Chloe Harris
•That's reassuring to hear. I keep reading horror stories online about people waiting months for benefits.

•Those were mostly from 2020-2021 when the system was overwhelmed. Regular claims process much faster now if you don't have any complications.

Also remember that your weekly benefit amount is based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The system calculates this automatically but it's good to understand how they determine what you'll receive.
0 coins
Chloe Harris
•How do I know what my base period is? Is that explained somewhere in the application?
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•Yes, there's information about base periods on the Washington ESD website. Generally it's the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file.

If you have any issues getting connected to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I used Claimyr recently and it worked great. They handle all the calling and waiting so you don't have to. Check out claimyr.com if you need to speak with an agent.

•Several people have mentioned that service. Might be worth it if I run into problems.

•It's definitely worth it if you value your time. I was able to get my issue resolved in one call instead of trying for weeks on my own.

Good luck with your claim! The key is to file as soon as possible and keep up with your weekly claims and job search requirements. Most people who follow the rules get their benefits without major issues.
