Washington ESD unemployment filing - where do I file for unemployment benefits?
Just got laid off yesterday and need to figure out where to file for unemployment. I'm seeing different websites and I'm confused about which one is the official one for Washington state. Do I go through the ESD website or is there another portal I should be using? Also how long does it typically take to get approved? Really stressed about this whole process.

You need to file through the official Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. Look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready before you start.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or will they get that info from my employer directly?

•They'll get most wage info from employers, but having your pay stubs handy is good backup documentation in case there are any discrepancies.

The application process itself is pretty straightforward but getting through to someone at Washington ESD if you have questions is nearly impossible. I spent weeks trying to call them when my claim got stuck.

•Same here! The phone lines are always busy. I eventually used this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. They basically handle the calling part so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Got through to an actual person in like 20 minutes.

File as soon as possible because there's a waiting week in Washington. Your claim starts the Sunday of the week you file, not the day you actually lost your job. Don't wait thinking you need to find work first.

•Good to know about the waiting week. So if I file today, when would I expect to see my first payment?

•If everything goes smoothly and you're approved, typically 2-3 weeks after filing. But that's assuming no adjudication issues come up.

make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending!! I made that mistake and it delayed everything

•How do I file weekly claims if I haven't been approved yet?

•once you submit your initial application you'll get instructions on filing weekly claims. you have to do it every week to keep your claim active

The Washington ESD system is honestly terrible. I filed in January and it took 6 weeks to get my first payment because they said they needed to verify my identity. Had to upload documents like 3 different times.

•6 weeks?? That's insane. What kind of ID verification did they want?

•Driver's license, Social Security card, bank statements. Then they wanted more documents. It was a nightmare.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirements. They're pretty strict about that now.

•Is that separate from the ESD application? How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?

Ellie Simpson
•Yes it's separate. You need to register at worksourcewa.com and apply for 3 jobs per week minimum. Keep detailed records.

Just a heads up that the ESD website crashes a lot, especially on Sundays when everyone is filing their weekly claims. Try filing early in the morning or late at night.

•Good tip, thanks! I'll try to file my initial claim tonight then.

I had to appeal my initial denial and it took forever. Make sure all your employment dates and reasons for separation are accurate when you file. Any discrepancies will trigger an adjudication review.

•What was the appeal process like? I'm worried my employer might contest my claim.

•It's a formal hearing process. You present your case, employer presents theirs, then an administrative law judge decides. Took about 8 weeks total for me.

Pro tip: screenshot everything and keep records of all your interactions with ESD. Their system has glitches and you'll want proof if something goes wrong.

•Smart advice. I'll start doing that from the beginning.

If you're having trouble reaching ESD by phone, there are services that can help. I used Claimyr after being on hold for literally 4 hours one day. They got me through to an agent in under 30 minutes.

•How much does something like that cost?

•It's worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone. Way better than spending entire days trying to get through on your own.

Been through this process twice now. The key is being patient and persistent. ESD moves slowly but eventually you'll get your benefits if you qualify.

•How do I know if I qualify? I was laid off due to budget cuts.

•Layoffs due to budget cuts usually qualify. As long as you didn't quit or get fired for misconduct, you should be fine.

Whatever you do, don't miss any deadlines or requirements. ESD is very strict about that stuff and they'll close your claim if you're not compliant.

•What are the main deadlines I need to watch out for?

Faith Kingston
•Weekly claim filings, job search contacts, responding to any requests for information. They give you specific deadlines for everything.

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Stay on top of everything and don't let them discourage you from getting the benefits you're entitled to.

•This is so true. I almost gave up when they kept asking for more documentation.

•That's exactly what they're counting on. Don't let the bureaucracy win.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states recently, you might need to file in a different state depending on where you earned the most wages. Check the ESD website for interstate claim info.
