How to tell Washington ESD unemployment you got a job - what's the process?
I just accepted a job offer and start Monday but I'm not sure how to properly notify Washington ESD that I'm no longer unemployed. Do I need to call them or can I do it online? I don't want to mess up my final weekly claim or cause any overpayment issues. My last day filing was yesterday and I reported that I was still looking for work because I hadn't started yet. What's the right way to handle this transition?

You need to file your weekly claim for the week you start working and report your first day of work. There's a section where you can enter your return to work date. Don't just stop filing without reporting it properly or you could get flagged for not responding.

•So I should file one more weekly claim even though I'm starting work? I was worried that would be wrong.

•Yes, you file for the week you start work and report the start date. That's how Washington ESD knows you're employed again and stops your benefits properly.

Make sure you report your exact start date and first day you worked. If you worked any days during your weekly claim period, you need to report those hours and wages too. Washington ESD is really strict about accurate reporting.

•Good point about the hours. I'm starting Monday so that would be in my next weekly claim period.

•The system will automatically calculate your final payment based on what days you worked that week. Very important to be accurate with dates.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I got my job last year. Kept getting busy signals when I tried calling to confirm I'd reported everything correctly. Ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent who walked me through the final steps. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service. How does it help with getting through to Washington ESD?

•They handle all the calling and waiting for you. Way better than spending hours on hold trying to get through yourself.

•That actually sounds useful. I always get disconnected when I try calling Washington ESD during busy times.

whatever you do dont just stop filing claims without telling them!!! i did that once and they sent me a letter asking why i stopped responding and threatened to make me pay back benefits

•Yikes, that's exactly what I was worried about. Thanks for the warning.

•This is why proper notification is so important. The system needs to know you're employed, not just absent.

The online system at secure.esd.wa.gov is usually the easiest way to handle this. When you file your weekly claim, there's a specific question about returning to work. Answer yes and provide your start date. The system will handle the rest automatically.

•Perfect, that sounds straightforward. I'll do it when I file this week.

•Make sure you keep a record of when you reported it in case there are any questions later.

Does anyone know if you can go back on unemployment if the job doesn't work out? Like if they let you go during the first few weeks?

•Yes, you can reopen your claim if you become unemployed again through no fault of your own. You'd need to file a new application though.

•Just make sure you document everything if the job ends unexpectedly. Washington ESD will want to know the circumstances.

•Good to know, thanks. Hopefully won't need it but nice to have that safety net.

I'm in a similar situation but my start date got pushed back a week. Do I need to report the job offer even if I haven't started yet?

•You only report when you actually start working, not when you get an offer. Keep filing weekly claims until your first day of work.

•Thanks, that makes sense. I was overthinking it.

Congratulations on the job! The process is pretty simple once you know what to do. Just be honest and accurate with your reporting and you'll be fine.

One thing to watch out for - if you worked any part-time hours while on unemployment, make sure your final claim reflects your total earnings correctly. Washington ESD cross-checks with employer wage reports.

•This is important. I got an overpayment notice months later because I underreported some gig work earnings.

•I didn't do any side work so should be straightforward for me, but good reminder for others.

Make sure you understand the difference between your last day of unemployment and your first day of work. They're not always the same day depending on when your work week starts.

Ryder Everingham
•Can you explain that more? I thought they'd be consecutive days.

•If you're unemployed Friday but start work Monday, your last day unemployed is Friday and first work day is Monday. You report both dates.

Lindsey Fry
•Exactly right. The system needs both pieces of information to calculate your final benefit week correctly.

I tried calling Washington ESD three times last month when I got hired and could never get through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. Worth it when you need to talk to someone quickly.

•How much does that cost? I'm always hesitant about paid services for government stuff.

•Honestly don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to avoid hours of calling. Check their site at claimyr.com for current info.

Pro tip: save confirmation screenshots of your final weekly claim submission. If there are ever questions about when you reported returning to work, you'll have proof.

•Great idea, I'll definitely do that.

•Screenshots saved my butt when Washington ESD claimed I never reported something. Always good to have documentation.

Does the job have to be full-time to stop unemployment benefits? What if it's just part-time?
0 coins
Lilly Curtis
•Part-time work doesn't automatically stop your benefits. You report your hours and wages, and Washington ESD reduces your weekly benefit amount accordingly. You might still qualify for partial benefits.

Anna Kerber
•Oh interesting, I didn't know you could get partial benefits with part-time work.
0 coins
Lindsey Fry
•Yes, as long as your weekly earnings are below a certain threshold, you can receive reduced unemployment benefits. It's called working part-time while on unemployment.

Been there! Make sure you're clear about whether this is temporary, seasonal, or permanent employment when you report it. Different types of work have different implications for your claim.

Ryder Everingham
•It's a permanent full-time position, so I assume that ends my claim completely.
0 coins
Niko Ramsey
•Yes, permanent full-time work will close your unemployment claim. Just make sure you report it properly so there's a clean break.

Quick question - do you get your final payment for the partial week you worked, or does employment immediately stop all payments?
0 coins
Lindsey Fry
•You get paid for the days you were unemployed that week. So if you were unemployed Mon-Wed and started work Thursday, you'd get 3/7 of your weekly benefit amount.

Seraphina Delan
•That makes sense, thanks for clarifying.

Congratulations on finding work! The key is just being honest and thorough with your reporting. Washington ESD's system is pretty forgiving if you're upfront about everything.

One last tip - if you're nervous about doing something wrong, that Claimyr service can connect you with a Washington ESD agent to double-check everything. Sometimes it's worth the peace of mind to talk to someone official.

The whole process should be quick once you know what to do. Just file that final weekly claim with your work start date and you're done. Simple as that.

Make sure to keep your job offer letter or any documentation about your start date handy when you file that final weekly claim. Washington ESD sometimes asks for proof of employment dates if there are any questions later. Also, don't forget to update your address or contact info in the system if your new job requires you to move or change your phone number - you'll want to receive any final correspondence at the right address.

•Great point about keeping documentation! I have my offer letter saved and will definitely make sure my contact info is current. Didn't think about the address update aspect but that makes total sense for any final paperwork they might send.
