How do I end my unemployment benefits with Washington ESD properly?
I just accepted a full-time position that starts Monday and I want to make sure I properly end my unemployment benefits. Do I need to call Washington ESD or can I just stop filing my weekly claims? I don't want to accidentally create an overpayment situation or mess up my account for future use. What's the correct way to close out my claim?

You should file one final weekly claim for the week you worked and report your return to work. Don't just stop filing - that can cause issues with your account status.

•So I file for the partial week I wasn't working? Do I put the start date of my new job?

Giovanni Rossi
•Yes exactly, report the days you weren't working and mark the date you returned to full-time work. The system will automatically close your claim after that.

Congratulations on the new job! Make sure you keep all your job search documentation just in case. I've heard Washington ESD can audit closed claims sometimes.

•Thanks! I've been keeping everything in a folder. How long should I hold onto the job search logs?

You definitely want to file that final claim properly. When you're on the weekly claim, there's a specific question about returning to work. Answer that honestly with your start date and the system handles the rest. Don't worry about calling unless you have specific questions about your situation.

•This is good advice. I made the mistake of just stopping my claims when I got a job last year and had to call Washington ESD to straighten out my account.

•What kind of problems did that cause? I definitely want to avoid any issues.

•It just showed my claim as still active when it should have been closed. Took forever to get through on the phone to fix it.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone for any reason, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind if I run into any issues. Hopefully I won't need to call at all.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything that helps with Washington ESD phone system sounds worth trying

Make sure you report your GROSS earnings for any days you worked, not your take-home pay. This is super important for that final claim.

•Good point! I haven't gotten my first paycheck yet since I just started, so I'll need to calculate based on my hourly rate.

Ava Williams
•Exactly. Just multiply your hourly rate by hours worked for that week. The system will calculate any partial benefit you might be owed.

Ugh I hate this part of the process. Why can't they just let you close your claim online without having to file another weekly claim? The Washington ESD website is so confusing about this stuff.

•I think it's because they need to track your earnings and make sure you're not owed any partial benefits for that final week. The system does most of the work automatically once you report.

•I guess that makes sense but it's still annoying when you just want to be done with unemployment

Just went through this exact situation last month. Filed my final weekly claim on Sunday, reported my return to work date, and by Tuesday my claim status showed as closed. Super easy once you know what to do.

•That's reassuring! Did you get any confirmation that it was properly closed or did you just check your account?

•I just checked my account online. Your claim status will change and you won't be able to file new weekly claims anymore. No special confirmation needed.

Quick question - does closing your claim affect your ability to file for unemployment in the future if you need to? I'm paranoid about messing up my account.

Dylan Evans
•No, properly closing a claim doesn't affect future eligibility. You'll just file a new initial claim if you become unemployed again.

•Thanks, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure!

Make sure you understand the difference between stopping benefits and closing your claim. Stopping benefits means you might still have an active claim but aren't getting paid. Closing properly means the claim is completely finished.

•That's a good distinction. I definitely want to close it completely, not just stop getting benefits.

•Right, and filing that final claim with your return to work date is what closes it completely. Don't just stop filing.

Congratulations on the new job! The job market has been tough lately. What field are you in if you don't mind me asking?

•Thanks! I'm in IT, took a while to find something that was a good fit but finally landed a great position.

One thing to remember - if you have any leftover benefit weeks on your claim, you can't use them once you return to full-time work. The claim closes regardless of how much benefit you have left.

Amara Adebayo
•That makes sense. I'd rather be working than collecting benefits anyway!

•Exactly the right attitude. Those unused weeks don't roll over to future claims either, just FYI.

I've been on unemployment for 6 months and really hoping to be in your shoes soon. The weekly claims are getting old. Any tips for the job search?

•Keep applying everywhere, even if the job doesn't seem perfect. This one wasn't exactly what I was looking for but it's a great opportunity. Don't give up!

Pro tip: take a screenshot of your final weekly claim submission and your account showing the closed status. Good to have documentation just in case.

•Smart thinking! I'll definitely do that. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

•This is really good advice. Documentation saves so much headache later if any questions come up.

Question about the timing - my new job starts Wednesday. Do I file my weekly claim on Sunday for the partial week or wait until the following Sunday?
0 coins
Dylan Evans
•File on the Sunday after your work week ends. So if you start Wednesday, file that Sunday for the partial week (Sun-Tues unemployed, Wed-Sat working).

•Perfect, that's what I thought but wanted to confirm. Thanks!

I used Claimyr twice when I had issues with my claim and it worked great both times. Really worth it if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD but can't get through normally. The waiting and busy signals are ridiculous.

•I might need to try that service. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about an issue with my claim.

The most important thing is don't overthink it. File your final claim honestly, report your return to work, and let the system do its job. Washington ESD's automated processes work pretty well for straightforward situations like this.

•You're right, I'm probably overthinking this. I'll just file the final claim and move on. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice!

•Exactly! And congratulations again on the new job. It's a great feeling to close out that unemployment chapter.
