How to get off unemployment benefits in Washington - proper way to end claim?
I just got hired for a full-time position starting Monday and want to make sure I properly end my Washington ESD unemployment claim. Do I need to file a final weekly claim or just stop filing? I don't want any overpayment issues later. Should I report my new job through the eServices system or call Washington ESD directly? Last thing I need is them thinking I'm still collecting benefits while working.

Congrats on the job! You need to file one final weekly claim reporting your start date and first day of work. Don't just stop filing without reporting the job - that can cause problems with your claim record.

•Thanks! So I report the job on my weekly claim for the week I start working?

Emma Davis
•Exactly. Report it for the week you actually start working, even if it's just one day that week.

You should also update your job search activities in WorkSourceWA to show you found employment. It helps keep your records clean and shows you completed the reemployment process successfully.

•Good point, I forgot about updating WorkSourceWA. Do I need to keep doing job searches until my claim officially closes?

•No, once you report employment that ends your job search requirement. Just make sure to update your profile to reflect your new employment status.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about ending your claim properly, I had good luck using Claimyr to get through their phone system. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way easier than spending hours trying to get through on your own.

•How much does that cost? I'm trying not to spend money right before starting a new job.

•I think it's worth it if you need to actually speak with an agent. Better than calling 50+ times and never getting through like I was doing.

•I've heard of this service but never tried it. Does it actually work or is it just another way to waste money?

Make sure you keep all your documentation about the job offer and start date. If there are any questions later about when you stopped receiving benefits, you'll have proof of when you became employed.

•What kind of documentation should I keep? Just the job offer letter?

•Job offer letter, first pay stub, anything showing your official start date. Also screenshot your final weekly claim showing you reported employment.

ugh i hate how complicated they make everything. cant you just call and say hey im working now cancel my benefits? why do they need all this paperwork

•I know it seems like a hassle, but they have to track everything for federal reporting requirements. The final weekly claim is actually the easiest way to do it.

•i guess but still annoying when youre trying to start a new job and deal with all this bureaucracy

One thing to watch out for - if your new job doesn't work out within the first few weeks, you may be able to reopen your claim instead of filing a completely new one. But that only works if you properly closed it in the first place.

Javier Torres
•That's good to know. How long do you have to reopen a claim if something happens?

•I believe it's within your benefit year, but don't quote me on the exact timeframe. You'd need to check with Washington ESD on the specific rules.

Does anyone know if you have to pay back benefits if you don't report employment right away? Like what if I forgot to file the weekly claim reporting my job?

•If you receive benefits for weeks you were working, yes that's considered an overpayment and you'd have to pay it back. That's why it's important to report employment immediately.

•Yikes, okay good thing I asked. I'll make sure to file that final weekly claim on time.

Congratulations on finding work! The job market has been tough lately so it's great to hear success stories.

Just want to add that Claimyr was really helpful when I had questions about my benefit year ending. Sometimes you really do need to speak with an actual person at Washington ESD and their regular phone system is impossible.

•How long did it take them to connect you when you used that service?

•Way faster than trying on my own. I think it was like 20 minutes total instead of calling all day and getting nowhere.

Make sure your new employer knows you were on unemployment. Some places want documentation for their records, especially if you're getting any hiring incentives or tax credits.

Javier Torres
•I hadn't thought about that. Should I bring my monetary determination or something else?

•Just mention it to HR when you do your paperwork. They'll tell you if they need any specific documents from Washington ESD.

•You might have gotten lucky, but the proper way is to file that final claim. It protects you if there are any questions later.

•maybe but it worked out fine for me

What if you're starting a part-time job? Do you still need to end your claim completely or can you keep filing and report the part-time wages?
0 coins
CosmicCaptain
•That depends on how many hours and how much you're earning. You might still be eligible for partial benefits if your wages are low enough.

Anastasia Sokolov
•It's about 25 hours a week, so probably too much to keep getting benefits.

The Washington ESD website has a checklist for ending your claim properly. It's buried in their resources section but it explains the whole process step by step.

•I'll look for that, thanks! I want to make sure I do everything right.

Remember to file your final weekly claim even if you only worked one day that week. You still need to report any wages earned during your claim period.

Javier Torres
•So if I start on Friday, I report wages for just that one day on my weekly claim?
0 coins
Zara Ahmed
•Exactly. Report whatever you earned during that benefit week, even if it's just one day of work.

This happened to my sister last year and she just stopped filing without reporting her job. Months later Washington ESD sent her a letter asking why she stopped filing and whether she found work. Better to do it right from the start.

•What happened with your sister? Did she get in trouble?

•Nothing serious, just had to provide employment verification and confirm her end date. But it was a hassle she could have avoided.

good luck with the new job! its nice to see someone getting off unemployment by choice instead of being cut off

•Thanks! Yeah, it feels good to be getting back to work instead of dealing with all the claim requirements.

If you have any issues with your final claim or questions about overpayments, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier might be worth it. I used it when I had an adjudication issue and it saved me weeks of trying to get through on the phone.

•Good to know there's a backup option if I run into problems. Hopefully the final claim process goes smoothly.

Double-check that your claim shows as inactive after you file your final weekly claim. Sometimes there are system glitches and it doesn't update right away.
0 coins
Javier Torres
•How long should it take for the system to show the claim as closed?
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•Usually within a few days of filing your final claim, but I'd check after a week if you don't see any change.

Just wanted to say this thread was super helpful. I'm starting a new job next week too and wasn't sure about the proper process for ending my claim.

Make sure you understand the difference between stopping your claim temporarily vs ending it permanently. If this new job is temporary or contract work, you might want different options.
0 coins
Javier Torres
•This is a permanent full-time position, so I definitely want to end the claim completely.

Ethan Wilson
•Perfect, then filing that final weekly claim with your employment information is definitely the right approach.

Make sure to keep a record of when you filed your final weekly claim for your own records. I'd recommend taking a screenshot of the confirmation page showing you reported your employment. That way if there are any questions months down the road, you have proof you properly closed your claim. Also, don't be surprised if you get a final determination letter in the mail a few weeks later - that's normal and just confirms your claim has ended.
