NY unemployment direct deposit change timing - will payment go to new account on Tuesday?
I just updated my direct deposit info for my NY unemployment benefits yesterday (Thursday), and I'm supposed to certify this Sunday like usual. Has anyone changed their banking info this close to certification and still had their payment show up in the new account on Tuesday? I'm worried the system might not process the change in time and send it to my old account which is now closed. The website didn't say how long the change takes to process. Would really appreciate knowing others' experiences with this!

It should work fine! As long as you got the confirmation screen when you updated your bank info, you should be all set for your payment to go to the new account.

•I did get that confirmation page, but I didn't save it or anything. Wish they'd send an email confirmation too.

I want to caution you that sometimes there can be a delay of up to one payment cycle when changing direct deposit information. While many people experience no issues like the previous commenter, NY unemployment's system occasionally takes 7-10 days to fully process banking changes. If your payment doesn't arrive in your new account by Wednesday, it's worth calling NYSDOL to check the status.

•Thanks for the heads up! Do you know if they would notify me if there was a problem? I'm worried I won't even know if something goes wrong until I realize no money showed up anywhere.

•Unfortunately, their notification system isn't always reliable for these issues. You'll likely only know if there's a problem when your payment doesn't arrive as expected. In your case, since your old account is closed, if they try to deposit there, the payment would be rejected and returned to NYSDOL, which could add another 3-5 business days to the process while they sort it out.

I did the EXACT same thing in January! Changed my direct deposit info on a Thursday, certified Sunday, and the money DIDN'T go to either account on Tuesday!!! I panicked and spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to someone at unemployment. They told me the payment was in limbo because of the timing of my account change. Had to wait almost 2 more weeks for them to sort it out!!! So frustrating!!!! Hope you have better luck than me!!!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. I really can't afford to wait 2 weeks for this payment. Was there anything specific you did to get it resolved?

•I just kept calling over and over until I finally got through. The wait times were RIDICULOUS. Finally on like the 40th try I got someone who could help. They had to manually process something on their end. The whole system is so messed up!!

In my experience helping clients with NY unemployment issues, the direct deposit change timing can vary. The official guideline is that changes should be made at least 5 business days before you want them to take effect, but in practice, many changes made Thursday or Friday do process in time for Tuesday payments. If you're concerned about reaching someone, I've found that using the Claimyr service (claimyr.com) can save you hours of frustration. They help you get through to an unemployment agent quickly instead of dealing with busy signals and disconnections. They have a good demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE For your specific situation, I'd recommend monitoring both accounts if possible. If the payment doesn't show up by Wednesday morning, that's when I'd try to contact NYSDOL directly.

•Thank you for this detailed info! I hadn't heard of Claimyr before - I'll check out that video. I unfortunately can't monitor the old account since it's closed, but at least I know what timeline to expect now.

•Hey I used that Claimyr thing last month when my payments suddenly stopped. Actually worked pretty well, got through to someone in like 20 mins instead of calling for days. Just saying.

When I updated my direct deposit for NY unemployment last year, it went to my OLD account first, then the next week it started going to the new one. So you might want to check with your old bank to see if they have procedures for redirecting funds from closed accounts. Some banks will automatically forward deposits for a short time after closing.

•That's a good point about the bank. I'll call them tomorrow to see if they have any way to catch and redirect the deposit if it goes there. Thanks for the suggestion!

The system is designed to process direct deposit changes within 24-48 hours, BUT sometimes there are glitches. I changed mine on a Wednesday once and it worked fine for the next payment. Another time I changed it on a Monday and it still went to my old account! Their system is so inconsistent. If it doesn't work properly, be prepared to make dozens of calls to get through to a representative.

•That inconsistency is what worries me. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I think you'll be fine! The system updates overnight from what I understand.

•Actually, that's not always true. My sister works for a bank and says ACH direct deposit changes often take 3-5 business days to fully process through the banking system, even if the unemployment system shows it as updated on their end. There's several steps in the process.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my payment DID go to my new bank account today (Tuesday) without any issues! Changed on Thursday, certified Sunday, paid Tuesday in the new account. So it seems like if you update a few days before certifying, it should process in time. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!
