How long for NY unemployment direct deposit to switch to new bank account?
I'm switching banks and getting a new account today. Does anyone know how long it takes for NY unemployment to process a change in direct deposit information? I'm holding off on filing my weekly certification until I can be reasonably sure the money will go into my new account instead of the old one. Has anyone done this recently? I'm worried about delays or missing payments during the transition.

I changed my direct deposit info back in January. It took about 5-7 business days to fully process in the NYSDOL system. If you update it today, I'd recommend waiting until next week to file your certification to be safe. Make sure you keep your old account open until you confirm the new one is receiving payments.

Is there any way to check if they processed the change? I did this last month and got super anxious about where my money would end up. What if they deposit it in the old account after I've closed it? Will they send a paper check instead?? Has anyone had that happen?

You can call and verify if the direct deposit change was processed, but getting through to a live person can be very difficult. You'll see your updated bank info in your payment history once it's processed.

I had this exact problem last year. The best way to verify is to check your payment method under your account settings after a few days. It should show the last four digits of your new account. If the money does go to a closed account, it will bounce back to NYSDOL, and they'll eventually mail you a check, but that can take 2-3 weeks. Definitely keep the old account open for at least a month if possible.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you keep your old account open during the switch just in case?

The DOL website claims it takes up to 3 business days for direct deposit changes to take effect, but THAT'S A JOKE. When I changed mine in February, it took almost TWO WEEKS! And good luck getting anyone on the phone to check the status! Their system is RIDICULOUSLY outdated. I ended up missing a payment because it bounced back from my closed account. Then got a letter saying I needed to verify my identity AGAIN because of the returned payment. What a nightmare!

Oh no, that sounds awful! This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I definitely don't want to close my old account until I'm 100% sure the new one is working.

I had the same exact issue trying to reach someone at NYSDOL about my direct deposit change. After days of constant busy signals, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an unemployment agent in under 30 minutes. Changed my life honestly. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - their website is claimyr.com. Worth it just to confirm your banking info is updated correctly and avoid the whole returned payment headache.

anyone know if u can still get paid on the old debit card while waiting for direct deposit to update? or does changing to direct deposit cancel the card immediately?

You can only have one payment method active at a time. When you switch to direct deposit, the debit card option is deactivated. If a payment tries to go to a bank account that isn't valid, they'll eventually mail you a paper check.

Here's the exact process based on my experience updating bank accounts with NYSDOL in January 2025: 1. Log into your NY.gov ID account 2. Go to "Unemployment Services" and select "Update Your Direct Deposit Information" 3. Enter your new banking details (account/routing numbers) 4. The system takes 3-5 business days to process the change 5. You can verify it's updated by checking your payment method in account settings IMPORTANT: I'd recommend waiting until you see your new bank account (last 4 digits) showing up in your payment method before filing your next certification. And definitely keep your old account open for at least 3-4 weeks during the transition.

Thank you for these detailed steps! I just made the change online following your instructions. I'll wait to certify until I see the new account info showing up in my payment history.

Yes! I updated my bank info online, waited 5 days, then checked my account to confirm the last 4 digits of my new account were showing. Then I filed my weekly certification and got my payment in the new account 2 days later with no issues. Definitely glad I waited to make sure everything was updated first.
