NY unemployment payment stuck after changing direct deposit - how long until redeposit?
I updated my direct deposit info to my new bank account last week, but my unemployment payment got sent back to the NY DOL because I guess the change hadn't processed in time. Now I'm wondering how long it takes for them to redeposit the funds into my new account? My rent is due soon and I'm getting really worried. Has anyone dealt with this before? The website doesn't say anything about timeframes for returned payments.

•3 WEEKS?? That's insane! Did you have to do anything special to make it happen or did it just show up eventually?

This happened to me in January. The standard processing time is 7-10 business days, but it can take up to 14 days depending on when your payment was returned to NYSDOL. The system has to recognize the return, then manually reprocess the payment to your new account. Make sure your new direct deposit information is correctly entered in your payment preferences section.

•Thank you for the info! I double-checked my account info and everything looks correct. Guess I'll just have to be patient and hope it comes through before rent is due. 😓

•I had this problem too but mine only took 4 days to come back. Maybe try calling them to ask? Sometimes they can expedite it if you tell them it's urgent for rent.

After trying to reach NYSDOL for DAYS about a similar issue, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - Definitely worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive payment issues.

•Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. Did the agent actually help resolve your issue when you got through?

•Yes! The agent was able to see that my payment was in the system waiting to be reprocessed. They flagged it as urgent and I got my money 2 days later. Just make sure you have your case details ready when they call you back.

Is your new bank account with a major bank or a online bank/credit union? I heard somewhere that major banks process faster than smaller institutions. My cousin changed to Chase and had no problems but when I changed to my local credit union it took FOREVER to get my money. Just FYI.

•I switched from Chase to Capital One. Maybe that's part of the problem? Though they're both pretty major banks I thought.

According to the NYSDOL guidelines, when a direct deposit is returned due to account changes, the standard reprocessing timeframe is 5-7 business days. However, this can extend to 10-14 business days during high-volume periods (which we're currently in for Q1 2025). To potentially expedite this process: 1. Verify your new account information is correct in the system 2. Contact the DOL directly (though phone lines are notoriously busy) 3. If you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay, request an expedited reprocessing when you speak with a representative The system runs a batch process for returned payments every Tuesday and Thursday, so timing can depend on when your payment was initially returned.

•This is really helpful info, thank you! At least now I have a better idea of the timeframe. I didn't know about the Tuesday/Thursday processing - my payment was returned last Friday, so maybe it'll be in tomorrow's batch.

why dont you just go to ur old bank and see if they can help?? sometimes they can redirect the deposit even after its been returned. or atleast thats what wellsfargo told me when i had a similar problm

•That's incorrect advice. Once a direct deposit has been returned to the originator (NYSDOL in this case), the bank can no longer access or redirect those funds. The payment must be reprocessed through the state's system to the new account.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! i had to borrow money from my parents while waiting for MY OWN MONEY to come back to me. they should have to pay us interest for making us wait!!!!

•Actually I agree with this! If we were late with anything they'd penalize us but when they're slow it's just 'oh well that's the process' 🙄

UPDATE: I used the Claimyr service that someone suggested and actually got through to a real person! The agent said my payment was already in the reprocessing queue and should be deposited by Friday. She also said for future reference, you should always update direct deposit info at least 7-10 days before your next payment date to avoid this issue. Sharing for anyone else who might run into this problem!

•That's great news! Yes, the 7-10 day buffer for account changes is mentioned in the fine print on the direct deposit authorization page, but they don't make it very obvious. Glad you'll be getting your payment soon.
