NY unemployment payment rejected after bank account change - how long for redeposit?

Last week I switched my direct deposit info to my new Chase account since I closed my old Wells Fargo account. But apparently my payment from Tuesday got bounced back to NY unemployment. The payment status shows "returned" on the website. I called the automated line and it says "payment returned by your financial institution." Anyone know how long it typically takes for them to reprocess this payment to my new account? Really need this money for rent due next week. Been on unemployment since March after my restaurant closed down, and this is the first time I've had any issues with payments.

Went through this exact thing back in October. It took about 10 days for my payment to be reprocessed to my new account. The system is archaic and slow as hell. Make sure your new bank info is correctly entered in the system - double check those numbers!

10 days??!! Thats gonna put me so behind on bills. Did you have to call them or did it just automatically get redeposited?

It went thru automatically but I did call just to verify everything was good. Took me 3 days of calling to get thru tho 🙄

Mine took 14 days when this happened to me. System is straight trash.

After trying to call NY unemployment for days with no luck (always busy signal or disconnected), I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a live agent in about an hour. They helped rush my payment after my banking info got messed up. Check out claimyr.com or this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - talking to an agent got my money released so much faster than waiting for the system to fix itself. Best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare!

You actually got through to someone?? Is this for real or just some spam thing?

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for almost a week straight. They just stay on hold for you and call when an agent picks up.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch - they just call and wait on hold instead of you doing it. When an agent finally answers, they connect you. Saved me hours of frustration.

I used it last month. It works. My payment was stuck for 3 weeks, got thru to someone using this and had money the next day. claimyr.com

I worked for a bank for 7 years. When ACH deposits get rejected the funds take about 3-5 business days to be returned to the sender. Then NY unemployment has to process it on their end which can take another 3-7 business days. So you're looking at anywhere from 6-12 business days total in most cases. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

this happened to me 2x now. First time it took them 8 days, second time 12 days. The system is completley broken and nobody at DOL seems to care about us. I'm starting to think the ny unemployment system is designed to be this confusing on purpose so they can save money by making it hard to collect benefits that we are ENTITLED to. 😡

Facts. The whole system is designed to be as frustrating as possible.

They 100% do this on purpose. I read somewhere they save millions by making the process so complicated that people give up.

I lost my apartment waiting for them to fix a "system error" last year. Never forget how they treat us when we're down.

Here's what worked for me to speed up the process: Email your state representative and explain your situation. I did this after waiting 2 weeks for a redeposit and suddenly my payment was processed the NEXT DAY after my rep's office contacted DOL. They hate the public pressure.

This. Local reps actually do help with this kinda stuff. They have special contacts at these agencies.

I had a similar problem in May. What nobody tells you is that you can request an emergency paper check instead of waiting for the direct deposit to recycle through their system. You have to specifically ask for this though - call and tell them you have urgent financial need and request a paper check to your mailing address instead of waiting for the redeposit.

Wait for real? They can send a paper check instead? How long did that take to arrive?

Took 4 days for me. WAY faster than waiting for them to reprocess the direct deposit.

I tried asking for a paper check and they said they couldn't do it. Guess it depends who you talk to 🤷‍♂️

Everyone's saying different timeframes but it all depends on when in the processing cycle your payment was returned. If it was returned right after they sent it, usually takes about a week. If it happens on a weekend or holiday, add at least 2-3 more days. The system is ancient and runs on like 50 year old computers or something ridiculous.

Pro tip from someone who's been thru the unemployment maze for months: ALWAYS KEEP YOUR OLD BANK ACCOUNT OPEN UNTIL YOU'VE CONFIRMED A PAYMENT HAS SUCCESSFULLY DEPOSITED TO YOUR NEW ACCOUNT. Wish someone had told me this before I closed mine. Saved myself a month of headaches.

I know this is a longshot but try reaching out through Twitter. I DMed @NYSLabor with my issue and surprisingly got a response and they escalated my case. Not guaranteed but worth a try - sometimes social media teams have more power than regular customer service.

I second this. Their social media team seems more responsive than their phone support.

Here's everything I've learned dealing with NY unemployment for over a year (and I've had the exact same issue you're describing twice): 1. Timing matters - payments returned on Monday-Wednesday typically get reprocessed faster than ones returned Thursday-Friday (which can get stuck over the weekend) 2. The unemployment portal status will say "returned" until they reprocess it. It won't update to "pending" or give you any warning before it suddenly changes to "paid" when they reissue it. 3. If you can actually reach a human (nearly impossible), they CAN expedite this if you explain you have urgent bills. I used claimyr.com to get through to an agent when I was desperate - totally worth it. 4. Keep checking your payment history daily. Sometimes they don't send the standard email notification when they redeposit. 5. Don't change any other account settings while waiting for the redeposit or it can reset the whole process. 6. If it's been more than 10 business days, you need to be persistent with calling and documenting who you spoke with. Good luck - the system is a nightmare but eventually you'll get your money. Just be prepared for it to potentially take 2 weeks.

Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! I'm on day 5 now and still nothing. I'll try that claimyr site to see if I can get through to someone.

Hot take: if you need the money ASAP, apply for emergency assistance through local charities while waiting. Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, and local community action programs often have rent assistance programs that can help bridge the gap while waiting for unemployment to fix their mess. Don't let pride get in the way if you're about to miss rent.

Believe it or not I know someone who works at NYSDOL. They said internally they aim for 7-10 business days for payment reprocessing, but their system is so overwhelmed it can take longer. They also said if you certified late or have any kind of "flag" on your account, the returned payment can trigger a review that further delays things.

0 coins

-

Kirsuktow DarkBlade

Do you know if having missed a week of certifying in the past counts as a "flag"? I missed one week in April but have been regular since.

I don't think one missed week from months ago would be an issue, but if you missed a week recently or there were any identity verification issues, those can cause delays.

Did anyone else notice NY unemployment seems to be slower processing ANYTHING at the end/beginning of the month? I've had so many issues at month transitions. I'm convinced they run some kind of monthly batch process that slows everything down.
