NY unemployment direct deposit missing after bank change - payment disappeared!
I'm in a total panic right now. I updated my direct deposit info for my NY unemployment benefits last Tuesday because I switched from Chase to Bank of America. The website said the change was successful, and I got the confirmation number. BUT my weekly payment that was supposed to hit yesterday ($582) is completely missing! It's not in either bank account, and my payment history on the NYSDOL site shows it was processed but doesn't show which account it went to. I've been calling the claims center non-stop since 8AM but keep getting the busy signal or disconnected. Has anyone dealt with this before? How long does it typically take for payments to show up after changing bank info? I really need this money for rent next week!

this happened to me in january. when u change banks theres like a 3-5 day processing period where the $ is basically floating between accounts. mine showed up in the new bank after 4 days even tho the website said it was paid on time

•Oh thank god, that gives me some hope! Did you have to do anything or it just appeared? My anxiety is through the roof right now.

The banking change doesn't go into effect immediately. When you update direct deposit info, there's typically a verification period of up to 5 business days. During this time, payments might show as processed but they're essentially in a holding pattern. The system is validating your banking information to prevent fraud. A few things to know: 1. If the payment was already in process when you made the change, it likely went to your old account. 2. If it was after the change but during verification, it may be held until verification completes. 3. The NYSDOL website often shows payments as processed even when they're still pending. I'd recommend waiting until at least Monday before panicking. Most banking verification processes complete within 5 business days. If you don't see it by then, you'll need to speak with a representative.

•Thank you for such a detailed explanation! That makes sense about the verification period - the website didn't mention that at all when I made the change. I'll try to be patient through the weekend.

DONT PANIC YET!! the exact same thing happened to me in February and I was freaking out too. It took exactly 7 days from when I changed my bank info for the payment to show up in my new account. The DOL systems are SO SLOW with this stuff. Just wait a few more days before you start worrying.

•7 days?! Ugh, that's forever when you're waiting for money. But it's reassuring to hear it worked out for you eventually.

The real problem is that NYSDOL's system is outdated and their communication is terrible. When you change direct deposit information, they should clearly explain there's a delay period, but they don't. I've seen this issue dozens of times on this forum. The good news is that your money isn't lost. The bad news is that there's not much you can do except wait. In the meantime, document everything - take screenshots of your payment history and the confirmation number from when you changed banks. If it goes beyond 7 business days, you'll need this documentation when you speak with a representative.

I had to change my bank info twice in the past year and both times there was this weird limbo period where my payment was just...gone. First time I freaked out and spent HOURS trying to get through to someone on the phone (impossible!!). Second time I just waited and sure enough it showed up in the new account after about 5 business days. The system just takes time to process these changes but they don't tell you that anywhere on the website.

•That's exactly what's happening to me - it's just in limbo! Did you get any kind of notification when it finally processed, or did you just have to keep checking your account?

After trying for THREE DAYS to get through to someone at unemployment, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. They have a service that basically keeps calling for you and gets you into the queue. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with explained that there's always a processing delay with bank changes that can be 3-7 business days. They were able to confirm my money wasn't lost and would be deposited once the verification was complete.

•I've never heard of this service before! I might try it on Monday if my payment doesn't show up by then. Did they charge a lot for it?

•It was worth every penny for me because I was losing my mind trying to get through on my own. They don't charge until they actually get you connected to an agent. Beats spending hours redialing!

This is actually a feature, not a bug. The delay is intentional to prevent fraud. Think about it - if someone accessed your account and changed your bank info, you'd want there to be some verification period before they could steal your money. The problem is NYS doesn't communicate this clearly. If you check your previous bank account carefully, you might see a small test deposit and withdrawal (usually less than $1) from NYSDOL. This is part of their verification process. Once they confirm the account is valid, your regular payment will process to the new account.

•I just checked and you're right! There was a $0.37 deposit from NYSDOL in my new account yesterday that I completely missed. That must be the verification test deposit you mentioned.

if it goes longer than a week you might need to call them. my cousin had to wait almost 2 weeks once and it turned out there was some flag on his account cuz the new bank was out of state or something weird

UPDATE: My payment just hit my new account this morning! It took exactly 6 business days from when I changed my bank info. Thanks everyone for the reassurance - you were all right that I just needed to wait. I wish the NYSDOL website had explained this delay period when I made the change. Would have saved me a lot of stress!

•Great news! Glad it worked out. This is definitely something NYSDOL should communicate better during the bank change process.

•Excellent! Always good to hear when things resolve themselves. For future reference, any changes to your claim (address, bank info, etc.) typically have a processing delay. Just part of dealing with government systems unfortunately.
