NY unemployment direct deposit delay after changing bank info - funds missing from both accounts

Has anyone experienced payment delays after updating direct deposit information for NY unemployment benefits? I changed my bank details on Saturday (3 days ago), and my payment status shows 'funds released via direct deposit,' but the money isn't showing up in EITHER account! I've checked both my old and new bank accounts multiple times today, and neither one shows any pending transactions or deposits from NYSDOL. This is making me super anxious since I need this money for rent that's due next week. How long does it typically take for funds to appear after changing direct deposit info? Should I be worried that my money is just floating around somewhere?

5 days?? That's such a relief to hear. I was freaking out thinking my money was lost forever. Did you have to call them or did it just show up eventually?

When you change direct deposit information, there's typically a processing delay of 3-5 business days. The system shows 'funds released' when they've been sent but banking transfers aren't instantaneous. Since you changed it on Saturday, remember that's not a business day, so the clock likely started Monday. I'd expect to see the funds by Thursday or Friday at the latest, and they'll go to your NEW account, not the old one.\n\nIf you don't see the money by Friday, then you should contact NYSDOL. Their system sometimes puts a temporary hold on the first payment to a new account as a security measure.

Thank you for explaining! That makes a lot of sense. I didn't realize the business days would be a factor, but of course it would be. I'll wait until Friday before panicking then.

I had a TOTAL NIGHTMARE with this exact situation!!! Changed my direct deposit info and my payment disappeared for over TWO WEEKS!! NYSDOL claimed it was sent but neither bank had it. Called NYSDOL like 50 times and kept getting hung up on or disconnected. Finally got through after endless tries and they had to trace the payment - turns out there was some verification flag on my account because of the change. RIDICULOUS system!!!!

OMG two weeks?! That's terrifying. Did they at least backpay you once they figured it out? I'm going to try calling tomorrow just to make sure everything's okay with my account.

This kind of extended delay is unusual and typically happens if there's a flagged identity verification issue or a typo in the banking information. Most people see their funds within 5 business days after a direct deposit change.

I changed my direct deposit info back in February and had almost the same experience. My payment was

Just checked and all my banking info is entered correctly, thankfully! The routing and account numbers match my bank statements exactly. That's good to know about the 4 business days though - seems like that's the average based on everyone's comments.

After trying for days to reach someone at unemployment about a similar issue last month, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was seriously a game-changer. They got me connected to an actual NYSDOL agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours getting disconnected. The agent confirmed that direct deposit changes typically take 3-5 business days, but sometimes trigger an automatic review that can extend it. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - definitely worth checking out if you need to talk to someone at unemployment fast.

I've never heard of this before! If I don't see my money by Thursday I'm definitely going to try this. Those automated phone systems are the worst, and I can never get through to a real person.

Switching direct deposit information sometimes triggers an automatic fraud review. This is actually a good security feature, even though it's super annoying when you're waiting for money. My brother works for a different state's unemployment office, and he says bank changes are one of the biggest flags for account takeovers, so they add extra verification steps. The good news is that your money isn't lost - it's just being held until the verification completes.

That actually makes me feel better, knowing there's a security reason behind it. I'd rather wait a few days than have someone be able to steal my benefits. Thanks for explaining!

Have u tried logging into ur ny.gov account and checking the payment history section? Sometimes the payment status will update there with more specifc info. Also when I changed my DD info last year they sent me an email when the money was actually deposited, not just when it was released. check ur spam folder maybe?

did u change ur info on the unemployment site or on the ny.gov id site? cuz theyre different systems and it gets confusing. i made that mistake and had to update it in both places

Wait, there are TWO places to update it?? I only updated it on the unemployment benefits page after logging in. Is there another place I need to change it too? Now I'm worried I messed something up!

To clarify, you only need to update your direct deposit information in one place - the Unemployment Benefits section after logging into your NY.gov account. The previous commenter is referring to a separate profile section, but for direct deposit of benefits, you did it correctly by updating it in the unemployment section.

Just want to follow up - did your payment eventually show up? Mine ended up being deposited on day 5 after changing my info. The waiting is definitely stressful!

Yes! The money finally appeared in my new account this morning - exactly 5 business days after I made the change. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for the reassurance and advice. For anyone reading this with the same problem, just be patient - the system works, it's just slow.
