NY unemployment direct deposit issues after bank change - money missing for 2 weeks

Has anyone else had trouble with NY unemployment direct deposits after changing bank info? I updated my banking details on the NY.gov site two weeks ago (Feb 3, 2025) after switching from Chase to Wells Fargo. My weekly certification was processed and shows as 'paid' on the portal for $582, but the money hasn't shown up in either my old or new account! I've tried calling the NYSDOL helpline 17 times and can't get through to a human. The automated system just says my payment was issued, but doesn't tell me WHERE it went. I'm freaking out because rent is due in 10 days and I need this money. Does anyone know how long bank changes typically take to process? Or how to track where my payment actually went?

when i changed my bank info last year it took almost 3 weeks for the new account to start getting the deposits. they never told me this would happen! the annoying thing is that the money doesnt go to your old account OR your new one during this time. its like stuck in limbo while they verify everything. check your mail, you might get a paper check instead for this period.

Thanks for replying! Did you ever get the money that was in limbo? I'm worried because the NYSDOL website shows it as 'paid' but doesn't say how or where. I haven't received any mail yet. Did you have to do anything special to get the payments moving again?

This is actually a common issue with the NY unemployment system. When you change bank accounts, they have a verification period that can take 7-14 business days (not calendar days). During this time, your payments may be held in a pending status even though the system shows them as 'paid.' Here's what you should do: 1. Check if they mailed you a paper check as a temporary measure (many times they default to this during account changes) 2. Look at your payment history on the NY.gov portal to see if there's a payment method listed 3. Request a payment trace if nothing arrives by day 15 The most reliable way to resolve this is to speak with an agent directly. They can see exactly where your payment was sent and initiate a trace if needed.

Thank you for the detailed response! I checked my payment history and it just says "Direct Deposit" with no additional details. How do I request a payment trace? Is that something I can do online or do I have to speak to someone? I'm really stressing about this because I have bills coming due.

I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM last month!!! The DOL website is GARBAGE and the phone system is even WORSE. I spent 4 days trying to get through to anyone. My payments were in limbo for almost 3 weeks and I was about to be evicted. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. They have a service that gets you through the phone queue and connected to an agent, usually within an hour. The agent was able to see that my payment was stuck in processing and they released it that same day. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Worth every penny because the agent told me my case would have been stuck for another week if I hadn't called in!

That's really helpful, thank you! I'm definitely at my wit's end trying to reach someone. Did the agent need any special information to release your payment? And did it go to your new bank account or did they send a check?

They just needed my SSN, DOB and some info to verify my identity. Once I got through, the agent saw right away that my payment was flagged for "bank account verification" and she overrode it. Money was in my new account next day. Just make sure you have your new account info handy when you call!

has anyone had there bank accnt closed during this process? my bank shut down my accnt right when I switched my direct deposit info and now Im worried the money is going to bounce back or something

If your bank account was closed, the deposit will be rejected and returned to NYSDOL. When this happens, they typically will either automatically issue a paper check to your address on file (which can take 7-10 additional days) or place a hold on your payments that requires you to call in. I'd recommend proactively calling them to report the closed account to avoid delays.

Same problem here, but my payment ended up coming as a paper check about 10 days after it showed as "paid" in the system. They don't tell you they're sending a check instead of doing direct deposit! Keep checking your mail every day. Also make sure your mailing address is up to date in the system.

That's good to know! I'll keep an eye on my mail. My address is current, so hopefully if they sent a check it'll arrive soon. This whole process is so stressful.

anyone know if you can still certify for benefits while waiting for this bank change thing to sort itself out? i dont want to mess anything up but i also dont want to miss a week

0 coins

Yes, you should absolutely continue to certify for benefits on your regular schedule, even while waiting for banking issues to resolve. Missing a certification can cause a break in your claim. The banking issue is separate from certification processing.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone! Used the Claimyr service that was suggested and got connected to an agent in about 45 minutes (way better than my 17 failed attempts). The agent confirmed my payment was held due to the bank account change and they had to manually verify my new account. She released the payment and said it should be in my account within 2 business days. She also mentioned that during bank changes, they sometimes automatically switch to paper checks for security reasons, but in my case it was just stuck in verification. Thanks everyone for your help!

thats great! glad you got it figured out. the system really needs to give better information about whats happening with our money!!

Awesome! Thanks for updating us. It's so frustrating that there's no clear information about this process on their website. Would have saved us all a lot of stress!

This is why I still just get paper checks. Too many horror stories about direct deposit issues. Yeah its annoying to go to the bank every week but at least i know exactly where my money is.

That's actually not a bad idea. Once I get this sorted out I might switch to paper checks too. Seems like it might be more reliable than dealing with all this banking verification stuff.

I'm going through something similar right now! Changed my bank info 10 days ago and still waiting for my payment to show up in the new account. The system shows "paid" but nothing in either bank account. This thread is super helpful - I had no idea about the verification period or that they might send paper checks during transitions. Going to try the Claimyr service tomorrow if my payment doesn't show up. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it's reassuring to know this is a common issue and not just me!

You're definitely not alone in this! I went through the exact same thing a few months ago and it's such a relief to find others who understand how stressful this process is. The lack of clear communication from NYSDOL about what happens during bank changes is really frustrating. Definitely try Claimyr if your payment doesn't show up - several people here have had success with it. Also keep checking your mail just in case they defaulted to sending you a paper check. Hang in there, it sounds like most people do eventually get their money, it just takes way longer than it should!

I'm dealing with this exact situation right now too! It's been 12 days since I changed my bank info from Bank of America to Capital One, and my payment shows as "paid" but hasn't arrived anywhere. Reading through all these responses is actually really comforting - I thought something was seriously wrong with my claim. It's ridiculous that NYSDOL doesn't explain any of this verification process on their website or give you a heads up that payments might be delayed or switched to paper checks. I've been checking my mailbox obsessively but nothing yet. Definitely going to try the Claimyr service if I don't see anything by tomorrow. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is more helpful than the actual NYSDOL website!

I'm in the exact same boat! Just switched from TD Bank to Chase 8 days ago and my payment is stuck in limbo too. It's so frustrating that they don't warn you about this verification process anywhere on their site. I've been refreshing my bank account like every hour hoping the money will magically appear. Based on what everyone's saying here, it sounds like we just have to wait it out or try that Claimyr service. At least now I know to check my mail for a possible paper check. This whole system really needs better communication!

Just want to add my experience to help others going through this nightmare! I had the same issue last year when switching from PNC to TD Bank. My payment was stuck for 16 days and I was panicking about my mortgage payment. What I learned from talking to the agent is that NY has extra security verification for banking changes that can take up to 3 weeks in some cases. They don't publicize this anywhere which is so frustrating! The agent also told me that if you have ANY discrepancy in your name between your unemployment account and your new bank account (even something like "Katherine" vs "Kate"), it can trigger additional holds. Make sure your names match exactly. Also pro tip: once you do get connected to an agent, ask them to put a note in your file about the banking change - apparently this can help prevent future delays if you need to call again.

This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! I never would have thought about the name discrepancy issue. I just checked and my unemployment account has my full legal name "Katherine Marie Shultz" but my Wells Fargo account is just "Katherine Shultz" - that could definitely be causing additional delays. I'll make sure to mention this when I call them. It's so frustrating that these details aren't explained anywhere and we have to learn through trial and error (and helpful community members like you!). The idea about asking them to put a note in the file is great too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm currently dealing with this exact same issue! Changed my bank info from Chase to Ally Bank 9 days ago and my payment shows "paid" but hasn't arrived anywhere. Reading through everyone's experiences here is honestly such a relief - I was starting to think my claim was somehow messed up or that I'd lost the money completely. It's absolutely ridiculous that NYSDOL doesn't give any warning about verification delays or explain that payments might switch to paper checks during this process. I've been checking both my old and new accounts multiple times a day and obsessively checking my mailbox. Based on what everyone's sharing, it sounds like this 1-3 week limbo period is unfortunately normal. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service if nothing shows up by early next week. Thank you all for sharing your stories and solutions - this community is way more helpful than anything on the official NYSDOL website!

You're definitely not alone in this frustrating situation! I went through something very similar about 6 months ago when I switched from Wells Fargo to a local credit union. Like you, I was checking my accounts constantly and getting more stressed each day. What really helped me was keeping a detailed log of dates - when I made the change, when payments showed as "paid," etc. This made it easier when I finally got through to an agent to explain the timeline. Also, don't forget to keep certifying for your weekly benefits even while this banking mess sorts itself out - that was something I almost missed because I was so focused on the payment issue. The Claimyr service really does seem to be the best way to actually reach a human based on everyone's experiences here. Hang in there!

I'm going through this exact same nightmare right now! Changed my direct deposit from Wells Fargo to Credit Union about 6 days ago and my payment shows "paid" but is nowhere to be found. I've been losing sleep over this because I have rent due next week. Reading through everyone's experiences here is honestly the first time I've felt any relief - I had no idea this verification limbo period was so common! The NYSDOL website gives zero indication that this could happen when you change banks. I've called probably 15 times and can't get past the automated system. Definitely going to try that Claimyr service everyone mentioned. Thank you all for sharing your stories - it's so frustrating that we have to rely on community forums to understand what's actually happening with our benefits instead of getting clear information from the state!

I completely understand that stress about rent! I went through this exact same situation about 3 months ago when I switched from Bank of America to my local credit union. Like you, I had no idea this verification limbo was even a thing until I found threads like this one. The anxiety of not knowing where your money went is terrible. What really helped me was documenting everything - screenshots of the "paid" status, dates, etc. When I finally got through via Claimyr (which really does work!), having all that info ready made the call go much smoother. The agent was able to see immediately that my payment was stuck in verification and released it same day. Also check your mail religiously - sometimes they default to paper checks during this period without telling you. You're going to get through this! The money isn't lost, it's just trapped in their slow verification system.
