Changed my bank info with NY unemployment and now my payment is missing

Just updated my direct deposit info with unemployment last Tuesday after switching from Chase to Bank of America. My weekly certification on Sunday showed 'payment released' on Wednesday, but the money hasn't shown up in either account as of today (Friday). Called both banks and neither one has any pending transactions or records of this payment. Really starting to worry since I need this money for rent next week. Has anyone dealt with this before or know how long it typically takes after changing bank accounts? The website shows the payment was processed but it's just... gone somewhere in the banking system.

Yep, happened to me back in February. Changed from TD to Wells Fargo and my payment went MIA for almost 2 weeks. The system has a weird delay when you update banking info. For me it eventually showed up in the new account, but only after I called and spoke with someone.

2 WEEKS?? 😱 I can't wait that long! Did calling actually help speed things up? The automated system is useless.

Yeah calling definitely helped. I used claimyr.com to get through to a human - it was the only way I could actually talk to someone instead of the robot nonsense.

It's a service that calls unemployment for you and when they get a real person on the line, they connect you. Saved me hours of hold time and the agent I talked to processed my payment right away. Best money I ever spent to get my benefits unlocked. Check out this video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true tbh... unemployment phone system is literally the 9th circle of hell

That's exactly why I used it lol. Was banging my head against the wall trying to get through myself. But it works - the callback system means you don't waste your whole day on hold.

I found a way to skip the hold times when I had this exact problem last month! Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an agent who fixed my missing payment issue in minutes. Talking to an agent got my money released within 24 hours - it was the only way I could talk to someone who actually knew what was happening with my funds. They have this system where they wait on hold for you then call when they get an agent. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Hmm does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to someone at ny unemployment for days...

100% worked for me. I was super desperate after waiting for 11 days with no payment. The agent I talked to said there's a security hold when you change banking info and they had to manually release it.

I dunno about this... sounds like one of those things that promises the world and delivers nothing 🤔

I get the skepticism, I was too. But when you've spent 3 days trying to get through on your own and getting nowhere, it's worth it. My rent was due and I needed that money asap.

This is a known issue with the system. When you update your bank account, they automatically put a 7-10 day hold on your payment for security reasons. They don't tell anybody this but its standard procedure. The payment will likely go to your new account but not until next week.

OMG THE SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!!! Changed from Wells Fargo to a credit union and my $$ disappeared into the void. Called WF and they said no record of attempted deposit. Called UI like 50 times and can't get through. I'm on day 9 of waiting.... starting to panic.

Day 9?? That's terrifying. Have you been able to talk to anyone at unemployment yet? I'm only on day 2 but already freaking out.

Nope, can't get thru to a human. Just that damn automated system that keeps telling me 'payment processed' which is obviously BS since I don't have the money 😤

This whole system is such garbage. I swear the NY unemployment website was designed by monkeys with typewriters. Every little change causes a cascade of problems.

Monkeys with typewriters would have made something better tbh 🤣

It's like they deliberately make it confusing so people give up and don't collect benefits

When I changed my DD info last year, it took 12 days for the payment to show up. They dont tell u this, but any banking changes trigger a fraud review process. You might need to upload additional ID verification docs to speed things up. Check your online account messages.

Just checked and there's nothing in my inbox about verification. Should I just upload my ID anyway or wait?

Wait for now, but keep checking daily. They're notorious for sending these requests at random times. My friend got a verification request at like 2am on a Saturday lol

Here's what's actually happening based on my experience working with the banking system (not for unemployment, but I understand the process): When you change direct deposit info, the system creates what's called a "prenote" test transaction to verify the new account is valid. This takes 3-5 business days. During this verification period, your real payment is held in a suspense account. If the prenote fails (wrong account number, closed account, etc.), they'll try to send it back to your old account. If successful, they'll release the funds to your new account. The most important thing to do is speak with someone who can check the status of this verification process. Regular call center agents often don't have visibility into this, but if you can reach someone in the banking/payments department, they can manually push your payment through. I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through to a specialized agent. It's the fastest way to reach someone who can actually help with direct deposit issues. I've helped several friends resolve this exact issue, and talking to the right person is the key difference between waiting 2 days versus 2 weeks for your money. The good news is your money isn't gone - it's just stuck in processing and needs manual intervention to release it.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! This makes way more sense than what the automated system tells me. Will definitely try to talk to someone ASAP.

This guy knows what he's talking about. I had this EXACT situation and the payment was sitting in some kind of holding account. Needed a supervisor to release it.

Just a heads up - I changed my DD info a few months ago and NEVER GOT THAT PAYMENT. Had to file an appeal form which took forever to process. Don't just sit around waiting, be proactive and call every single day until they fix it.

That's awful! Did they eventually pay you the missing money?

Yes but it took 6 WEEKS. I had to file a special form for missing payments and then call repeatedly. Such a nightmare.

check if u entered the routing/account # correctly. My partner transposed two digits and it caused their payment to bounce back. took 3 weeks to fix the mess 🙄

I work at a credit union (not in NY though) and we see this all the time with unemployment payments. The issue is that the ACH system that processes these transfers has built-in delays for account changes. From what I've observed with our members, state agencies like unemployment put a hold on the first payment to a new account as a security measure. The payment is still coming, it's just moving slowly through the system.

Thank you for sharing this insider perspective! Do you think there's anything I can do to speed up the process?

Unfortunately not much from the banking side - the hold is on the unemployment system side. Your best bet is to talk directly to someone at the NY unemployment office who can manually review and release the payment.

its becuz u changed ur dd info on a weekend. the system only processes changes monday-thursday. weekend changes don't get picked up till the following monday so theres gonna be a delay. source: happened to me twice

Have you checked your old account? Sometimes when you change DD info, the system still sends one last payment to the old account. This happened to me - thought payment was missing but it was actually in my old account that I rarely checked anymore.

I checked both accounts multiple times and called both banks. The money hasn't landed in either one yet.

go to ur local unemployment office in person!! seriously, waiting on phone or for website updates is useless. I went down to the office after having the exact same problem and they fixed it on the spot. bring ID and both bank account info with you.

This is good advice if you have the time, but the wait times at the physical offices can be insane too. Last time I went there was a 4 hour wait. That's why I ended up using claimyr.com instead.

My roommate is dealing with the EXACT same issue right now! He's been waiting for 3 weeks for a payment after changing banks. Called every day and finally got through yesterday - they told him his payment was "flagged for manual review" and is still being processed. Such BS.
