NY unemployment payment rejected by my bank but account info is 100% correct
Just certified for my benefits last Thursday and got the notification that the payment was issued on Monday. Problem is, my bank rejected the deposit even though I triple-checked that my routing and account numbers are absolutely correct in the NY unemployment system. I logged into my bank account today expecting to see the money and nothing was there. Called my bank and they said they rejected an ACH deposit from the state because of some verification issue. The weird part is I've received 3 payments already with no problems using the same account info. I'm completely baffled about what could be wrong since the info is definitely correct. Has anyone else dealt with this? Trying to figure out if I need to call unemployment or if there's something I can fix on my end.

Sounds like your bank might have flagged it as suspicious activity. My credit union did that to me once. Call your bank again and ask to speak to their fraud department specifically. Sometimes the regular customer service people don't know what's really going on.

•I didn't think of that! I'll definitely call and ask for fraud department tomorrow morning. Thanks for the suggestion!

•This happened to me too! Banks sometimes automatically reject government payments if there's any tiny discrepancy. Check if your name in the unemployment system EXACTLY matches your bank account name - even middle initials matter.

After fighting with NY unemployment for weeks about a similar issue, I finally found a service that helped me get through to an actual human. I used claimyr.com and honestly it was the best decision I made. They called unemployment for me, waited on hold, then connected me to a live agent when one was available. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast I wish I'd known about it sooner. They even have a helpful video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? Sounds too good to be true honestly 🤔

•Yeah it actually does! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for like 2 weeks straight. They just call and wait on hold for you, then your phone rings when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music lol

•wait so they just call for you? do they need any of your personal info?

•They just make the call and wait in the queue. You talk directly to the unemployment agent yourself when they connect you. Changed my whole situation - finally got my back payments sorted out.

Check if your bank account has any restrictions on government deposits or if you've reached some kind of deposit limit. Some banks are weird about unemployment deposits. Also make sure the name on your unemployment claim EXACTLY matches the name on your bank account.

This exact thing happened to me!!! The problem was that my bank had recently updated their security protocols and started rejecting ACH deposits that don't have perfect matching info. The unemployment system had my first and last name, but my bank account had my middle initial too. That tiny difference caused my payment to bounce back. Had to change my direct deposit info to my other account to fix it.

•omg that might be it! My bank just sent me something about security updates last month. I'll check if there's a name discrepancy. Thanks!

•Banks are getting so picky with this stuff lately. My friend had to update all her government payment info because her married name was on her bank account but her maiden name was still on some government records.

ugh the ny unemployment system is such trash. i'd call them but good luck getting through 🙄 might be faster to just change your payment method to the debit card option instead of direct deposit

•The debit card is even worse tho! Takes forever to arrive and then has all those stupid fees. Plus customer service for those cards is nonexistent

•tru but at least you'll actually get your money eventually lol. direct deposit issues can take weeks to resolve in my experience 😭

Here's what I would do to fix this (I used to work in banking): 1. First, confirm there's no temporary hold on your account or new security measures at your bank. Many banks have implemented stricter verification for government deposits recently. 2. Call unemployment (I know it's nearly impossible to get through normally, but I used claimyr.com to get a callback from an agent - totally worth it) 3. When you speak to an agent, ask them to verify the EXACT spelling of your name on file and confirm your account/routing numbers are entered correctly 4. Request they check if there are any payment block codes on your account 5. If all else fails, consider temporarily switching to the debit card option while you sort this out I've seen this issue multiple times and it's usually one of three things: either a name mismatch between systems, a bank security flag, or an unemployment system glitch. The fastest solution is always talking directly to an agent who can see what's happening in the system.

•claimyr.com really works? I've been trying to get through for ages about my claim issue

•Yeah it does. They basically wait on hold so you don't have to, then connect you when a human agent picks up. Totally changed my experience with unemployment - went from never getting through to speaking with someone who could actually help.

Just a shot in the dark but did you recently overdraft your account? Some banks will reject incoming deposits if you have outstanding fees. Happened to me last year 😑

Switch to the debit card option. NY unemployment direct deposit system is so broken right now. I've seen tons of people having issues for the past few months. Their system keeps glitching with certain banks.

•i second this! the direct deposit system has been having issues since they did that system update in september. my brother had to switch to the card too

I had this EXACT same thing happen in November. Called unemployment (took forever to get through) and turns out it was totally their fault. Their system had randomly added an extra digit to my account number even though it showed correctly on my end. They had to cancel the payment and reissue it with the correct info. Took almost 3 weeks to fix 🤬

•3 weeks?! That's so frustrating. Did they expedite the payment once they fixed it or did you just have to wait?

•They said they "expedited" it but it still took like 7 business days after they fixed it. The whole system is a joke honestly. Supposedly there's some backup payment processing system they have to use when the regular one fails.

•same here!!! they also messed up my account number and swore it was correct on their end until a supervisor actually looked at the full number in their system. don't take no for an answer when you call

Have you tried checking your payment status on the ny.gov website? Sometimes there are more details there about what happened with the payment. Go to payment history and click on the specific payment - it might show a specific error code.

Quick checklist: - Did you change anything in your online banking recently? - Has your ID/license expired? (Sometimes this triggers bank verification issues) - Did you hit any deposit limits? (Some accounts have monthly limits) - Has your address changed recently? Any of these could trigger a rejection even with correct numbers

Sophie Footman
•My license did actually expire last month and I renewed it! Could that really affect deposits??
0 coins
Savannah Weiner
•Yes!!! That's probably it! When your ID expires, some banks automatically flag government deposits for manual review. Call your bank and tell them about the renewed license - they might need to update your account verification status.

whoa thats weird! do you use a smaller local bank or credit union? I've noticed they tend to have more issues with unemployment deposits than the big banks

Contact unemployment ASAP - when a direct deposit fails, they're supposed to automatically issue the payment to the debit card instead, but sometimes this process gets stuck and you need an agent to manually push it through. Don't wait on this!

•this is correct! my wife had to get an agent to manually redirect her payment to the card after bank issues. Use claimyr.com to get through to someone - only way we finally got it resolved

•ugh i hate when people say "contact unemployment ASAP" like it's easy 😂 have you tried calling them lately? might as well tell them to climb mount everest

•lol fair point! That's why I use claimyr now - tried calling myself for 2 weeks straight before I found out about it. makes the impossible possible 🤣

I'm actually in the exact same situation right now!!! This is my 4th week of benefits and suddenly my bank rejected it. Calling unemployment is impossible so I gave up and just changed to the debit card option for now. At least I know the money will come through eventually that way.

NYSDOL posted on Twitter last month about some banks increasing their security measures and causing payment rejections. Check if your bank is on their list (Chase, Bank of America, and several credit unions were mentioned).

•This ☝️ Bank of America specifically has been flagging unemployment deposits since their big fraud scandal last year. They never tell customers either, they just quietly reject the deposits.

This is such a frustrating situation! I've been dealing with something similar lately. One thing that helped me was calling my bank's technical support line (not regular customer service) and asking them to check their ACH rejection logs. They were able to tell me the exact reason code for why the payment was rejected - in my case it was a "name mismatch" even though everything looked correct on my end. Sometimes the unemployment system sends your name in ALL CAPS or with different formatting than what your bank has on file. Also, if you have any joint account holders or authorized users, that can sometimes cause issues with government deposits. Hope you get this sorted out soon!

•This is really helpful advice! I never thought about calling the technical support line specifically. The name formatting issue makes so much sense - banks can be super picky about that stuff. I'll definitely try calling their tech support tomorrow to get those rejection logs. Thanks for the detailed suggestion!
