NY unemployment deposit of $3500 appeared then vanished from my account - now I'm negative $2300
This is crazy - I woke up yesterday morning and saw a deposit of $3500 in my account that looked like it was from NY unemployment. I thought maybe it was back pay or some kind of adjustment I was owed. I quickly transferred $2300 to my other account just to be safe since I've had issues with deposits being reversed before. By afternoon, the entire $3500 was removed from my account but there's no record of the deposit or withdrawal anywhere in my transaction history! Now my main account is showing negative $2300 and the bank is threatening overdraft fees. When I called unemployment they told me to contact my bank. My bank says I need to talk to unemployment. Been passed back and forth all day and nobody is taking responsibility. Anyone else deal with something like this? How did you fix it? The bank is saying I could be responsible for the negative balance even though I never received any notification about where the money came from or why it was taken back.

sounds like someone made a mistake depositing money into ur account and then realized it and took it back. But since you moved some of it, youre on the hook for that. Honestly I'd just wait a bit and see if they contact you. Worst case just setup a payment plan with your bank if they try to collect.

•Yeah I'm thinking it might be a mistake but its so weird there's no record of any of it in my transactions. The bank literally can't explain where the money came from or went!

•The bank HAS to have a record! That's BS they're telling you they don't. Ask to speak to a manager and demand they show you the transaction history. They can't just ghost deposit and withdraw without records.

•this happened to my cousin last year. turns out it was a system error and they eventually fixed it but it took like 3 weeks 😩 just document EVERYTHING

After beating my head against the wall for weeks with ny unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment in like 20 minutes. They basically call and wait on hold for you then connect you when someone picks up. I was able to get my issue fixed immediately after talking to a rep. Best money I ever spent considering how much back pay they released for me! Check out their explainer video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 5 weeks of calling myself and never getting through. They just wait on hold so you don't have to. When someone answers they call your phone and connect you.

•do you have to give them any personal info? not comfortable with that

•They just need your phone number to call you back when they get someone on the line. You talk directly to the unemployment agent yourself.

Omg i'm dealing with the EXACT same thing but it was $2800 for me!! The money showed up in my account for like 8 hours then disappeared. I've called like 15 times and everyone keeps passing me around. NY unemployment system is completely broken 🤮

•Did you transfer any of it out? That's what's got me in trouble - transferred before it disappeared

•nah I was at work when I noticed so didn't have time to move it. Lucky me I guess? But still frustrating AF that nobody knows what happened

Alright I worked for a bank for 5 years so let me explain what probably happened here. This is likely what's called a "provisional credit" that was later reversed. Sometimes when ACH deposits come in, they show in your available balance before they're fully cleared. If something was wrong with the deposit (wrong account, funds not available from sender, etc) then the bank will reverse it. The problem is you transferred some out before the reversal. You need to: 1. Go to your bank IN PERSON and request a complete transaction history including pending and reversed transactions. They 100% have this even if it's not showing in your app. 2. Ask them specifically for documentation of the original deposit - what account it came from, when it was initiated, etc. 3. Contact unemployment with this specific info - not just "money appeared and disappeared" 4. If the bank threatens overdraft fees, ask for them to be waived due to the unusual circumstances. 5. If you can't get anywhere with regular customer service at either place, try reaching unemployment through claimyr.com (they'll get you to a live agent quickly) and escalate at your bank to the branch manager. This is fixable but you need to be persistent and get the right documentation.

I hate to say this but ur probably gonna have to pay that money back... when my ex had something similar happen his bank told him he was responsible even tho it wasn't his fault 🤷♀️

•Not necessarily true. If it was an error on unemployment's end they might be able to fix it. My sister got a random $1200 deposit that was taken back but they later redeposited the correct amount.

The same thing happened to me last month!!! Except mine was for $4200 and I transferred it ALL out because I thought it was my backpay finally coming through. Now they're saying I owe them the full amount back even though it was their mistake. This system is TOTALLY BROKEN. I've been fighting it for weeks.

•Try using claimyr.com - I was in a similar situation and they got me to a supervisor who fixed my issue in one call

document EVERYTHING. save screenshots, record phone calls (NY is one-party consent state so its legal), write down names of people you talk to. you're gonna need all this evidence when they try to make you pay it back.

•THIS! 👆 Also request everything in writing. Verbal promises mean nothing with these government agencies

the ny unemployment system glitched hard last week. there was a thread about it in r/personalfinance - apparently a bunch of people had random deposits that were later reversed. someone said it was a test file that accidentally went live.

•Do you have a link to that thread? Would be really helpful

•ill try to find it when im not on mobile. but basically they said it was a technical error and everyone affected should contact unemployment directly

This is why I always wait at least 5 business days before touching any government money that shows up unexpectedly. Too many horror stories like this. Sorry you're dealing with this mess.

contact your state representative!!! seriously, this worked for me with a different unemployment issue. their office has special contacts at unemployment and can escalate way faster than you can on your own.

•I second this! My assembly member's office fixed my unemployment problem in 48 hrs after I spent months trying on my own

•That's a good idea! Do I just google my local representative?

•yep! google "who is my ny state assembly member" and it'll show based on your address. call their office and ask for help with an unemployment issue.

FILE A CFPB COMPLAINT!!!! (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) This will light a fire under your bank's ass to resolve this. They legally have to respond to these complaints. www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint

Check if this is connected to the recent tax adjustment thing. I know they've been adjusting unemployment tax withholdings for some people. Maybe this was related to that but processed incorrectly?

•I hadn't thought of that! I did file taxes in March so maybe it's connected somehow

If all else fails, try the phone service claimyr to get through to unemployment. Then refuse to hang up until they transfer you to a supervisor who can actually help. Regular agents just read from scripts and can't fix unusual problems like this.
