NY unemployment says I've been paid but no money in account - possible fraud?

Filed for unemployment in April after getting laid off from my restaurant job. My claim was approved and everything seemed fine until I checked my payment history yesterday. It shows that I've been receiving weekly payments of $408 since May, but I haven't received a single penny in my bank account. Checked my direct deposit info and it's correct. Called my bank and they confirmed no deposits from NY unemployment have been attempted. Worst part is when I tried calling unemployment, I kept getting disconnected after waiting for hours. I'm worried someone might have stolen my benefits somehow. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm completely out of savings now and rent is due next week. Any advice on how to reach a real person who can help me figure out what's happening to my money?

This happened to my cousin last year. Turned out someone had somehow redirected his benefits to another account. You NEED to talk to a real person at unemployment asap. Keep calling and trying to get through - they can see where the payments are actually going.

Ugh, I've been trying for days! Did your cousin ever get his money back? I'm starting to panic about this.

Yeah he did, but it took like 6 weeks which sucked. They had to do a fraud investigation and eventually returned all the money. But only after he managed to actually talk to someone.

This is why I always recommend people take screenshots of EVERYTHING when dealing with ny unemployment. Every confirmation, every page, every email. You never know when you'll need proof.

After giving up with endless calls, I found this service called Claimyr that got me talking to a real agent within an hour! Saved my sanity after weeks of failed attempts. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when a real person is on the line. Got my payment issue resolved that same day - talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Check them out: claimyr.com or watch this: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to get through for almost 3 weeks now 😩

It worked for me! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. They called me back with an agent on the line in about 45 minutes. Best thing is you don't have to sit there listening to that hold music all day.

I get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But when you've been trying for weeks and getting nowhere, it's worth it. They literally just wait on hold so you don't have to.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

The difference is it actually worked 🤷‍♀️ They don't do anything except wait on hold and connect you with an agent. I was connected with someone who fixed my issue in one call.

You need to file a fraud claim IMMEDIATELY. Like today. Go to the ny unemployment website and look for the fraud reporting section. This is classic identity theft - someone intercepted your payments. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get that money back. Trust me.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know how long the fraud investigation usually takes? I'm literally about to be evicted if I don't figure this out soon.

It can take 4-8 weeks honestly. But the good thing is they usually prioritize active claims with suspected fraud. Make sure you mention your hardship situation when you talk to them.

also contact ur state representative!!! they have special channels to unemployment and can sometimes speed things up. worked for me when i was in a similar boat

OMFG THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOOOO!!!! It showed I was getting paid for 6 weeks but nothing in my account!!! I finally got thru on the phone (took 3 days of calling) and found out some ahole had changed my direct deposit info somehow. They fixed it but I had to wait another 2 weeks to get my back payments. The system is sooooo broken 🤮

I had a similar issue and finally resolved it. Here's what you need to do: First, you absolutely need to speak with an agent. Regular phone calls are nearly impossible, so I used claimyr.com which connected me with an agent in about an hour. Second, ask them specifically to check where your payments are being sent. In my case, someone had changed my payment method to a debit card instead of direct deposit. Third, file a fraud claim through the website AND tell the agent you're doing this. Fourth, contact your local state representative's office. They have special contacts at unemployment and can escalate your case. Fifth, document everything - dates, times, confirmation numbers, and names of anyone you speak with. It took me about 3 weeks to get my back payments, but they did eventually come through. The key is getting a human on the phone who can see where the money is actually going. Don't give up!

Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown. I'm going to try claimyr right now because I'm getting nowhere with regular calls.

This is solid advice. I'd add: change your unemployment account password and enable any 2-factor authentication if available. Also check your credit report for any other suspicious activity.

this is actually more common than people realize... the ny unemployment system has mad security issues. there were news articles about it a few months ago. some hackers figured out how to change direct deposit info without triggering notifications. make sure u check ur payment details EVERY WEEK.

Have u tried checking if they issued u a debit card instead of direct deposit? Sometimes the system defaults to a card if theres any issue. they send it in a plain white envelope that looks like junk mail. I almost threw mine away 🙄

I never received any card, and my online account definitely shows direct deposit as the payment method. But I'll double check my mail from the last few months just in case.

yea check ur mail carefully. and maybe call the keybank debit card people directly to see if one was issued in ur name? the number should be on the unemployment website

Theres no way ur getting thru to an actual person by calling the regular number. Those phone lines are basically for show at this point lol. I tried for WEEKS last year. Either use claimyr.com (worked for me) or else email your state assembly person. They have special backdoor numbers to unemployment.

This right here ^^^^ I spent 3 weeks calling non-stop before I found out about the state assembly rep trick. They got my issue fixed in 2 days.

sounds like someone hacked ur account and changed the payment info. happened to my roommate. check if ur email has been compromised too cuz they might have deleted notification emails. u need to treat this like full identity theft - check ur credit reports and everything.

Call the fraud department directly instead of regular unemployment line: (518) 485-2144. Worked for me when I had a similar issue. The wait times are way shorter.

That number doesn't work anymore - they changed it a few months ago. The new fraud hotline is (888) 598-2077

same thing happened to me!! I was able to get through after using claimyr.com and the agent told me someone had changed my direct deposit to a completely different bank account. They had to freeze my claim and do an investigation. took about 5 weeks but I eventually got all my back pay. it was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for dayyyys

Check the ID.me verification too! Sometimes if there's an issue with your identity verification, they'll show payments as processing but hold them. This doesn't sound like your issue but worth checking just in case. Log into id.me and make sure everything is still verified.

pro tip: call EXACTLY at 7:59:50am so that you're already on the line when they open at 8am. Still not guaranteed but way better odds of getting through. Thats how I finally reached a human after 2 weeks of trying.

Natasha Volkova

This doesn't work anymore. Everyone knows this trick now so the lines are jammed at 8am. Better to try around 10:30am or after 3:30pm when volume drops a bit.

I'm sorry ur dealing with this. The ny unemployment system is a complete joke. They say they've 'improved' it but it's still running on technology from the stone age. Hope u get ur money soon 😢
