Filed ny unemployment 12 weeks ago and haven't received a single payment - losing my mind!
I got laid off back in April and immediately filed for unemployment. My claim shows as 'approved' online and I've been religiously certifying every Sunday for the past 12 weeks, but haven't seen a single dollar hit my account. My payment history just shows $0 for each week with a status of 'pending.' I've triple-checked everything - made sure my direct deposit info is correct, verified my identity through ID.me, checked that I'm answering all certification questions properly, even made sure my old employer responded to their paperwork. I've called the unemployment office literally 40+ times but either get disconnected or stuck in an endless loop of automated messages. I've sent messages through the online portal but just get generic responses. I'm down to my last few hundred bucks and rent is due next week. Has anyone managed to actually reach a human being at the unemployment office? Is there a secret phone number or best time to call? I'm desperate at this point.

The ny unemployment system is complete trash. I found myself in the exact same position last year - approved but pending for 14 weeks. The ONLY way I managed to get it resolved was finding this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls and waits on hold for you, then connects you when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my payments released within 48 hours after months of nothing. Best money I ever spent considering I got all my backpay at once. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this for real? sounds too good to be true... how does it actually work?

Yeah its real. They basically have a system that dials repeatedly and waits on hold so you don't have to. When a real person picks up, they connect the call to your phone. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks.

No catch, they just solve the hold time problem. You still talk to the same NY unemployment reps, they just get you to the front of the line. Literally saved my sanity.

It's not a hack, it's just an automated calling service. I got $7800 in backpay after a 10 min call with a rep. Do what you want, but UI systems are designed to be frustrating so people give up.

Same boat here. 16 weeks and not a penny. The trick that worked for me was calling exactly at 7:58am (right before they officially open). I got through on my third attempt doing this and finally got my backpay sorted out. Keep trying, dont give up!

This! Early morning is key. I'd also suggest trying on wednesday - for some reason the wait times seem shorter mid-week.

I've been trying the early morning thing for weeks with no luck. What number were you calling? I've been using the main 888 number.

Ya I used the main 888 number. Honestly it's luck of the draw, but 7:58am definitely increased my chances. If u cant get thru that way, try that claimyr thing the other person mentioned? I've heard good things.

Have you checked if there's a hold on your claim for any reason? Log into your account and see if there are any action items or messages indicating why payments are pending. Could be they need additional documentation or verification. Alot of claims get stuck because of missing info they never tell u about š¤¦āāļø

There's nothing showing up in my portal - no action items, no messages asking for more info. Just says approved but payments are all still "pending." It's maddening.

OMG WHY IS NY UNEMPLOYMENT SO BROKEN??? I swear they make it impossible on purpose. I was in ur exact situation and ended up contacting my state senator's office. They have special contacts at unemployment and got my issue fixed in about a week. Google your district and send them an email explaining everything.

THIS!!!! State reps are literally the only ones who can cut through the red tape sometimes. They have direct lines to people in the unemployment office that we peasants don't have access to š

I'll definitely try this! Never thought about contacting my state senator. Did you just email or call their office?

I filled out the contact form on their website first, then followed up with a call two days later. Make sure to have all ur claim details (dates, confirmation #s, etc) ready to give them. They'll have you sign a release form so they can inquire about ur case.

Usually when claims get stuck like this for weeks its because of a 'flagged' issue that puts you in the manual review queue. The most common are identity verification problems, previous overpayment issues, or your employer contesting the claim. Only a claims specialist can clear these, which is why talking to a real person is the only solution.

I know this sounds bizarre but try calling the TTY/TDD line (the one for hearing impaired people). For some reason it has waaaaay shorter hold times, and they'll still help regular callers. Just say you misdialed if they ask. Worked for me after 6 weeks of pending payments.

This is actually genius. They don't advertise this trick for obvious reasons but it totally works!

I get that, but when the regular system is completely broken and people can't feed their families, you do what you gotta do. The whole system needs fixing.

Here's my comprehensive guide after dealing with NY unemployment hell for 3 months straight: ā¢ Call the main number as soon as they open (7:30am), but keep redialing if you get the busy signal ā¢ If that fails, try Claimyr.com - they'll call repeatedly and connect you when someone answers (this saved me weeks of frustration) ā¢ Email your state assembly member AND state senator (do both) with your claim details ā¢ Use the callback feature on the website if available, but don't rely on it ā¢ Double-check your ID.me verification is complete ā¢ If you receive ANY letters in the mail, respond immediately even if you think they're not relevant ā¢ Keep detailed notes of every attempt to contact them The system is designed to be frustrating so people give up. DON'T GIVE UP. Your backpay will come through eventually. Mine took 11 weeks but I eventually got over $6,000 all at once.

Thank you for this detailed breakdown! I'm definitely going to try all of these. Did you find that Claimyr was worth it? I'm hesitant to spend money when I'm already broke from not getting my benefits.

Absolutely worth every penny. I spent hours upon hours trying to get through myself with no luck. Claimyr got me connected to a rep in about 90 minutes. When you think about all the backpay you're missing out on, it's a no-brainer investment.

Um has anyone noticed that the entire NY unemployment system got a "upgrade" like 6 months ago and it's been a complete dumpster fire ever since? š„ My claim was smooth sailing before the upgrade and then suddenly "pending" for 8 weeks. Finally got it fixed but had to reach an actual human.

Facts. I work in software development and I can tell that whole site was built by the lowest bidder lol. Probably using technology from 2005.

I hate to say this but u might just have to physically go down to a Department of Labor office in person. When my online claim was stuck for 7 weeks, I drove to the Albany office and refused to leave until someone helped me. Got it fixed that same day.

Most offices aren't even accepting walk-ins anymore since covid. They'll just turn you away at the door. Learned this the hard way after driving 45 minutes to my nearest office.

Danm really? The Albany one was letting people in with appointments, and if u showed up early they sometimes had cancellations. This was about 3 months ago tho, might have changed.

Have you tried using their social media? Sometimes tweeting at @NYSLabor or messaging them on Facebook gets a faster response than the official channels. Make your message public and polite but firm about the urgency of your situation.

Check if ur bank rejected the deposits for some reason. This happened to me - my claim showed approved online but payments were being rejected by my bank because my name was spelled slightly different in the unemployment system vs my bank account. Had to verify my banking info with a rep over the phone.

That's a good point. I'm going to call my bank today and see if they've been rejecting any incoming transfers. Didn't even think about that possibility!

The real scam is how NY unemployment doesn't hire enough people to handle the call volume. They're literally saving money by making it impossible to reach them. I waited 9 weeks for my benefits and nearly got evicted. The day I finally talked to a human, my payments were released within hours. It's all about getting past the digital wall they put up.

Yep, and then they have the nerve to say shit like "we're processing claims as quickly as possible" š Meanwhile people are losing their homes and going hungry.

ok but real talk: does anyone else find it suspicious that our tax dollars pay for this garbage system that doesnt even work? like we paid for this trash and now we cant even access the benefits we also paid into? make it make sense plz š¤

It's actual insanity. We literally fund this system through our payroll taxes for YEARS and then the moment we need to use it, it's completely inaccessible.

Pro tip: if you can't get through on the phone, file a complaint with the NY Department of Labor Inspector General. Google the number. They have a fraud/complaint hotline and while they normally deal with fraud AGAINST the system, they also handle complaints ABOUT the system. Got my issue escalated this way after 5 weeks of nothing.

have u checked ur spam folder for emails from unemployment? sometimes they send important messages that end up in spam and if u miss responding to them they put a hold on ur payments

I feel u so much. My claim was stuck for 3 months and I got desperate enough to try anything. What finally worked was using claimyr.com to get through to a rep, who told me my claim had a "special condition" flag that needed manual review. Nothing showed this online! Got $5600 in backpay a week after speaking with them. Talking to a human is truly the ONLY way to fix these issues.

It's not like some magical service that does anything special - they literally just call repeatedly and wait on hold so you don't have to. You still talk directly to the regular unemployment people. For me it was the difference between getting through vs not getting through at all.

I can vouch for this! Used it when I was at my wits end after 7 weeks of pending payments. Got through to a rep who cleared my back payments on the spot.
