Desperate to reach someone at NY unemployment - certified but no payments for weeks!

I've been collecting unemployment since August after getting laid off from my retail job. Everything was going fine until about a month ago. I was certifying weekly as usual, but suddenly my payments stopped coming through. It's been almost 4 weeks without a payment now, even though I got an email saying I'm still eligible to certify! The weird thing is, when I try to certify now, the system gives me an error message saying my claim needs review. I've called the unemployment office at least 30 times a day for the past two weeks but either get a busy signal or it hangs up after the automated message. I've sent emails through their contact portal but haven't heard anything back. My rent is due in 3 days and I'm seriously panicking. I've borrowed money from family already and maxed out my credit card. Does anyone know how to actually get through to a real person at the unemployment office? This is getting ridiculous!

I swear there's no worse feeling than the anxiety of waiting for those payments when the bills are stacking up. I went through a similar situation back in April. Took me forever to get through to someone.

After struggling with the phone lines for weeks and getting absolutely nowhere, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they actually got me connected to a real person at unemployment. Talking to an agent got my payments unlocked within days. Best decision I ever made considering how much money I was missing out on! They have a video explaining how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real or just another scam trying to prey on desperate people? 🤔

Not a scam at all! I was super hesitant too but I was at my wits end after trying to call for 2 weeks straight. They basically call for you and when they get a human, they connect you. Saved me from losing my apartment honestly.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

Ethan Davis

•

No catch - just a service that does the calling/waiting for you. They just connect you when there's an actual person on the line. After I got through, the agent fixed my issues in like 10 minutes.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? cuz I've literally been trying to call for a month

It worked for me! I got connected within a day after trying to call myself for weeks. I was about to give up completely before I found them.

I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's literally just a calling service. They don't handle your claim or anything. They just save you from the hours of redialing and waiting on hold. Then you talk directly to unemployment yourself.

Ive been dealing with this EXACT same problem! First they were paying me on time evry week, then suddenly nothing for almost a month now. When i try to call it just says they're experiencing high call volumes and hangs up. This system is completely broken 😡

Honestly, it's like they WANT us to give up. Classic government efficiency at its finest. 🙄

fr fr... I'm bout ready to camp outside their office at this point lol

Have you tried reaching out to your state representative? I was stuck in the same boat for 6 weeks last year, and my assemblyman's office helped push my claim through. They have special contacts at unemployment that regular people don't have access to.

I didn't even think of this! Do I just look up who my rep is and call their office?

Mei Wong

•

Yep! Just google "[your county] NY state assembly" and call their constituent services. They usually have a staff person who handles unemployment issues. They might ask you to fill out a consent form.

This actually works! My sister was waiting for 2 months and her state senator's office got it fixed in a week.

Pro tip: call EXACTLY at 8:00:00 am when they open. Like literally have your phone ready to hit dial the second it turns 8. I got through on my third try doing this. If you call even 5 minutes after they open, your basically screwed for the day.

Truth. Also try calling on Tuesday or Wednesday. Mondays are impossible and Fridays they start checking out early lol

I've tried this soooo many times and still can't get through. It's like everyone in NY has the same idea 😩

If youve been getting an email saying youre still eligible that might actually be part of the problem. I had a similar issue and it turned out they flagged my account for "identity verification" but never sent the notification. When I finally got through, they said there was a note on my account but the email notification never went out. Check your spam folder too!

I've been checking spam constantly and there's nothing... what number did you eventually get through on?

0 coins

I called the main unemployment number 1-888-209-8124 but it took me literally 78 tries over 3 days. Finally got through on a Wednesday around 10:30am. Good luck!

The system is jst totally overwhelmed right now. My friend who works at NYSDOL says they have a huge backlog of claims that need review, and not nearly enough staff to handle them all. A lot of people are in the same boat as you. wish i had better news but this is whats happening

Listen, I know EXACTLY what you're going through because the same thing happened to me for 5 weeks. Here's what finally worked: First, the standard phone line is basically useless. I tried for weeks with no success. What worked for me was a combination of strategies: 1) I used claimyr.com to get through to an agent. They charged a fee but it was 100% worth it because they got me through to a real person who could help. That got the ball rolling. 2) I discovered my issue was a "pending identity verification" that got triggered when I logged in from a new device. The agent helped clear that up right away. 3) I sent a detailed message through the contact portal on the NY unemployment website, being super specific about my issue. 4) I contacted my state assembly person's office as backup. Once I got through to an agent, they cleared the hold on my account and I received all my backpay within 3 business days. The key is actually reaching a human at unemployment who can look at your specific claim. Don't give up! The money is yours and you're entitled to it. The system is designed to frustrate you into giving up, but keep trying all channels. That Claimyr service was honestly a game-changer for me though.

THIS!!! 👆👆👆 So much good info here. I did the same with Claimyr after trying for weeks on my own and got my issue resolved in one call.

I've never heard of Claimyr before. Gonna check it out because I'm in the same situation and desperate.

Has anyone actually confirmed this works? Seems too good to be true tbh.

I used it last month and it worked. They just call for you and connect you when there's an actual person. Saved me literally days of calling.

Have you tried contacting them through Twitter? Sometimes the social media team responds faster than any other method. Tag @NYSLabor in a tweet explaining your situation. Be polite but clear about how urgent your situation is.

I don't have Twitter but maybe I'll create an account just for this. Does it really work?

0 coins

It worked for my roommate! They responded within 24 hours and asked her to DM her info. Had her issue fixed in 3 days.

check if ur account has been hacked. there's been a wave of unemployment fraud recently. if someone got into ur account and changed the direct deposit info, that could explain why ur not getting paid even tho ur eligible.

Omg never thought of that... how would I check? The last time I logged in everything looked normal

Go to the payment history section and see if payments are being processed but just not hitting your account. If they show as paid but you're not getting them, someone might have changed your payment method. You DEF need to talk to someone asap if that's the case.

I hate to be that person but... welcome to ny unemployment hell 💀 Been dealing with their bs for 2 years now and it never gets better. the whole system is designed to make you give up

if you're really desperate and need cash fast, consider pawning something valuable temporarily? I had to do this when my unemployment got held up. Not ideal but I got my stuff back once the payments came through.

This is terrible advice. Don't pawn your stuff, you'll get pennies on the dollar. Try to negotiate with your landlord for an extension instead.

Just sharing what worked for me in an emergency situation, not saying it's ideal. But when you need money NOW and unemployment is playing games, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

anybody notice they ALWAYS say "due to high call volume" no matter what time or day you call? like, fix the system then! hire more people! do something! we cant be expected to just wait indefinitely for money we need for FOOD AND SHELTER

PREACH 🙌 it's like they think we're calling for fun and not because we literally can't pay rent

They've been saying "high call volume" for like 3 years straight now lol

classic govt excuse. "we can't help you because too many people need help" make it make sense

Check your message inbox on the unemployment website! I had the same problem and it turned out they needed additional documentation but I never got the email notification. Found the message accidentally when I was clicking around the site.

0 coins

have u tried the unemployment callback form on their website? Some people say it works but I personally never got a call back. Might be worth trying anyway, who knows

0 coins

Emma Anderson

•

That callback form is a joke. I filled it out 4 times and never got a single call back.

0 coins

I actually got a callback once! But it was 3 weeks later when I had already figured out another solution 🙄

Try this hack: call the spanish language line even if you don't speak spanish. They usually have shorter wait times and most agents speak english too. Just say "english please" when they answer and they'll transfer you or help you directly.

Can confirm this works sometimes! Just be polite about asking for English.
