Filed for ny unemployment in October but haven't received a single payment yet
I started filing for unemployment back in October after getting laid off. It's now February and I haven't received a single payment. I check my account every week and it shows my claims as "pending" with no explanation. I've tried calling the unemployment office literally every single day - sometimes 5-6 times a day - but can never get through to an actual human. Either it's busy signals or I get stuck in the automated system that eventually hangs up on me. The website is completely useless for finding out what's going on with my claim. I've sent messages through their online portal but never get responses. I'm completely out of savings at this point and about to miss another rent payment. Does anyone know how to actually get someone on the phone or find out why my payments are stuck?

Welcome to NY unemployment hell my friend. Sorry to say but this is pretty much standard at this point. I waited almost 3 months before I got my first payment. The system is completely overwhelmed and broken.

•3 months?? I'm already at 4 months and nothing. Did you do anything special to finally get your payments started?

•honestly it just randomly started working one day. I think I got lucky and someone finally looked at my claim. keep certifying every week no matter what!

After weeks of trying to call and getting nowhere, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent. I was skeptical but desperate, so I tried it. They stayed on hold for me and called when an agent picked up. Talking to a real person fixed everything - my payments started coming the next week! It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•sounds fishy af... another 'solution' to nysdol problems? 🙄 does it actually work or just another scam preying on desperate people?

•I get the skepticism - I was too. But after 2 months of trying to call myself with no luck, this actually connected me to a real person who fixed my claim status. My backpay hit my account 3 days later.

•Wait for real? I spent 4 hours on hold yesterday just to get disconnected. How much time did it save you?

•Honestly it saved me DAYS of frustration. I would spend hours calling and never got through. With Claimyr I just went about my day and got a call when they connected me to an agent. Totally worth it.

•I'm just sharing what worked for me when I was in the same desperate situation. Do what you want. I was about to give up before I tried claimyr.com and it finally got me to a human who could help.

I had the EXACT same issue and fixed it by contacting my state assemblyman's office! They have dedicated staff who can escalate unemployment issues. It took about 2 weeks after I contacted them but they got all my backpay released at once.

•I didnt even think about contacting my assemblyman. Did you just call their local office?

Evelyn Xu
•Yep! Just google your district's assemblyperson and call their office. They'll have you fill out a form with your info and claim details. They deal with this stuff constantly.

•Can confirm this works sometimes. My cousin tried this route and got everything fixed in about 10 days. Worth a shot!

Check if ur claim has any outstanding issues on the website. Look under the claim status section - sometimes there's a tiny notification about needing additional documents or identity verification that's easy to miss. I was stuck for 2 months before I realized they needed me to upload my drivers license 🤦♀️

For what its worth I used that claimyr service too after seeing it recommended here. Took like 40 minutes but they connected me to a real agent who saw that my identity verification was stuck in the system. Problem fixed in one call after months of nothing. Their website is claimyr.com if ur interested

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? they actually get you through to NYSDOL?

Kayla Jacobson
•Yeah it actually calls NYSDOL and stays on hold, then calls your phone when a real person picks up. Not a scam - they dont ask for any personal info, they just do the calling/holding part for you.

OK SO HERES WHAT U NEED TO DO: First, make sure you're certifying EVERY WEEK even if you're not getting paid. This creates a backlog they'll have to pay once your claim is processed. Second, try calling right when they open (7:30am) or right before they close (around 6pm). The hold times are slightly better. Third, if nothing is working after weeks of trying, you have a few options: 1. Contact your state representative or assemblyperson 2. Use a service like claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you (this is what finally worked for me) 3. Send a secure message through the portal specifically mentioning financial hardship 4. Try the alternate phone numbers (there are several that go to different departments) When you do get through, be super nice to the agent! They deal with angry people all day. Ask them to explain what's holding up your claim and take detailed notes. Sometimes they can fix it on the spot, other times they'll escalate it with notes. Don't give up! I was in your exact position last year and eventually got ALL my backpay in one lump sum. The system is broken but persistence eventually pays off.

•Thank you for this detailed advice! I've been certifying every week religiously. I'll try the opening/closing time trick tomorrow. If that fails I'll look into that claimyr site since a few people here seem to have had success with it.

•THIS is the real advice 💯 I'd also add - take screenshots of EVERYTHING. Every confirmation, every certification, every message. You might need proof later.

•that claimyr thing actually works? I keep seeing it mentioned but seems too good to be true

•Yep it works. After weeks of trying, I finally bit the bullet and tried it. You pay them to stay on hold, and they call you when they get a person. Saved me hours of frustration and my claim got fixed that day.

•Good thought but I've been checking spam religiously. Nothing there sadly.

ATTENTION!!! New NY law just passed this month that requires NYSDOL to speed up claim processing. If ur waiting more than 30 days they have to give u a specific reason. Might help ur case. Google "ny unemployment processing timeline law 2023" for details

•Have u seen this actually working tho? Laws are nice but enforcement is another story 🙄

•Fair point lol. But you can reference the law when you talk to them - sometimes that lights a fire under their ass 🔥

I was in the same boat for 3 months. Turned out my former employer was contesting my claim but nobody bothered to tell me. Do you have access to your online account? Check if theres a message about a hearing or pending employer dispute.

Jordan Walker
•I can log in but there's literally no information about why its pending. No messages, no alerts, nothing showing a dispute. It's infuriating!

•Classic NYSDOL... 'we won't tell you why we're not paying you but we also won't answer the phone' 🤡

try dming them on twitter. sounds stupid but it worked for me after 6 weeks of no movement. their social media team can escalate things internally.

•Really? That's a weird but interesting tip. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. At this point I'll try anything.

So I went thru this EXACT same nightmare last summer. I finally broke down and used claimyr.com after seeing it recommended here like 50 times. They connected me to an actual human at NYSDOL who fixed my claim in 10 minutes. Turns out there was a flag on my account because I had accidentally put the wrong last date of employment (off by ONE day). Such a stupid reason to hold up payments for months, but at least I got my backpay. Might be worth a try if you're desperate.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? i keep seeing people mention this service

•It legitimately works. They just call NYSDOL and wait on hold for you, then connect the call when a person answers. Saved me hours of frustration.

•So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I tried this and it worked. They charge but I got like $8k in backpay after one call with an agent so... worth it lol

Did you check if your bank account info is correct in the system? My friend had a similar issue and it turned out payments were being rejected because she had an old account number listed.

u should look into if ur identity might have been stolen. theres been a huge spike in unemployment fraud since covid and sometimes they freeze legit claims when they suspect fraud. happened to me.

Jordan Walker
•Oh god I hope not. How would I even check that?

Admin_Masters
•Check your credit report for any weird activity. But really you need to talk to someone at NYSDOL to confirm if that's the issue.

•I used it last month when I was in OPs situation. It works exactly as advertised - they call and wait on hold, then call you when they reach a person. Got my claim fixed that day after weeks of trying myself.

•Used it 2 weeks ago. Got connected to an agent in about an hour. My issue was fixed immediately. Prior to that I had spent probably 20+ hours trying to get through myself with no luck.
