Need to talk to a real person at NY unemployment - what's the best number?
I've been trying for weeks to get through to someone at the unemployment office. Every time I call the main number (888-209-8124), I either get disconnected, stuck in an endless loop of automated messages, or told to call back later because of high call volume. I filed my claim back in March after getting laid off from my restaurant job, and there's some kind of issue with my account that the website doesn't explain. Just says "pending review" but it's been almost 7 weeks now with no payment. I've sent messages through the online portal but nobody responds. Does anyone know a direct number or extension where I can actually speak to a human being? Or any tricks to get through the main line? I'm desperate at this point - rent is due next week and my savings are almost gone.

Good luck getting through 🙄 I've been trying for over 2 months and haven't spoken to a single real person. The system is completely broken.

•2 months?? That's crazy. Have you gotten any payments yet or are you still waiting like me?

•Still waiting... going on 9 weeks now with nothing. Had to move back in with my parents at 31. This system is a joke.

•Same boat! I'm about to sell my car just to make rent. How is anyone supposed to survive when they make it impossible to even talk to someone??

I finally got through after weeks of trying! Used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that kept calling for me and then connected me with a live agent when they picked up. Best money I've spent in a while - got my issues fixed in one call and my payments started coming 2 days later. There's a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true after the hell I've been through trying to get someone on the phone.

•100% worked for me. They basically just do the annoying part of waiting on hold so you don't have to. When an agent finally answers, your phone rings and you're connected. Saved me hours of frustration.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch - they just solved a pain point. After trying for 3 weeks to get through myself, having someone else wait on hold was worth every penny. My backpay came to almost $4000 so it was a no-brainer.

•just tried it and it actually worked. got connected to an agent in about 2 hours. my issue is finally resolved after 5 weeks of nothing but busy signals and automated messages

The trick is to call right when they open at 8AM. I finally got through that way after trying for weeks in the afternoon. Still had to wait on hold for 1.5 hours, but at least I eventually spoke to someone.

•I tried this and still couldn't get through. Said all agents were busy even at 8:01am 😫

Try reaching out to your state representative or senator's office. That's what finally worked for me after 6 weeks of getting nowhere. Their staff can escalate your case with a direct contact at unemployment.

Here's what worked for me after 2 months of nothing: First, document everything. Dates you called, times, what the automated system said, screenshots of your claim status. Then, try these approaches (in order of effectiveness): 1. Use claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you when a real person picks up. Worked like a charm for me. 2. Contact your state assembly person or senator - they have special contacts at the DOL and can often get things moving. 3. Try calling the alternate line at 888-209-8124 but press options for employers or tax questions instead of benefits. Sometimes those departments have shorter hold times and can transfer you. 4. Email your documentation to the commissioner's office (found on the NYSDOL website) with a clear, polite explanation of your situation. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don't give up! Once I finally got through, they fixed my issues and released all my backpay in 24 hours.

•This is super helpful, thank you! Did you have to pay anything for the Claimyr service?

•Yes, there is a fee, but it was worth every penny to me. I had been trying for 8 weeks to get through - that's 8 weeks with no income. Getting my backpay released immediately after the call more than justified the cost.

•I can second the state rep suggestion. My assemblyman's office was able to get someone from DOL to call me back within 48 hours.

The entire NY unemployment system is a disaster on purpose. They make it impossible to reach anyone hoping people will just give up. I'm convinced its by design to save money.

•THIS!!! 💯 They know exactly what theyre doing. Make the system so frustrating that people abandon valid claims.

•conspiracy theories dont help anyone. the systems just old and overwhelmed, not some evil plot

•Then why haven't they fixed it? It's been a problem for YEARS, not just during covid. They have the money and resources but choose not to improve it.

Try this trick: when you call the main number, instead of selecting options for claimant services, choose the fraud department or employer services options. Those queues are usually shorter and then ask to be transferred once you get someone.

•This worked for me too! Got through in 20 minutes using the fraud department option.

•Yeah it depends who you get. Some will help and others won't. It's a gamble but worth trying if you're desperate.

I know people hate facebook but try messaging NYS DOL on their FB page. Surprisingly, I got a response within a day and they escalated my claim.

After trying everything else, I finally broke down and used that Claimyr service (claimyr.com) that ppl keep mentioning on here. Not gonna lie, was skeptical AF but it actually connected me to an agent in about 90 min. My claim had been stuck for 2 months and they fixed it during that one call. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human being to get things sorted.

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

•normally I'd agree but this isnt fixing the system - just helping you navigate it. all they do is wait on hold so you dont have to, then call you when a person answers. simple but effective.

•hmm maybe I'll try it then. been stuck in limbo for 11 weeks now 😩

•So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I remembered seeing this thread. Used Claimyr and got a call back with an agent in under 2 hours. My backpay is now being released!

Has anyone tried contacting them through Twitter? I've heard some people have gotten responses that way.

•I tried tweeting at them every day for a week. Got one generic response telling me to check the website FAQ 🤦♀️

•I think it depends how many followers you have tbh. My friend with 15k followers got help quickly. My account with 200 followers got crickets.

Pro tip: call the TTY/TDD number even if you don't need those services. The wait times are much shorter.

•Isn't that kinda unethical? Those lines are specifically for people with hearing disabilities.

•Maybe, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Been without income for 3 months here.

•Please don't do this. My brother is deaf and relies on those services. When people abuse them, it makes the wait longer for those who actually need them.

I work at a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues. The BEST method right now is definitely reaching out to your local representative. They can escalate your case directly. Find your NY state assembly person here: https://nyassembly.gov/mem/search/

I got through last week after using Claimyr. My sister told me about it after seeing it on here. They kept calling for me and when someone finally answered, they connected me right away. Fixed all my issues in one call - payments started 2 days later. claimyr.com saved my sanity.

•It worked for me! I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 7 weeks to get someone on the phone myself. You pay them to do the annoying part (staying on hold) and then they call you when a human picks up.

Anyone else notice if you call at weird hours like 4:30 PM you sometimes have better luck? Everyone calls first thing in the morning or at lunch but mid-afternoon seems to have shorter waits sometimes.

•I'll try that tomorrow! Been trying at 8am with no luck.

If you have a complex issue, I highly recommend documenting EVERYTHING and preparing exactly what you're going to say before you call. When I finally got through, I had about 3 minutes to explain my situation before they helped me.
