Need a direct number to reach NY unemployment - tired of the endless 888-209 loop
After being let go from my retail job in October, I filed for unemployment right away. Got all my paperwork done and recieved benefits for about 3 weeks. Then suddenly my payments stopped in November with no explanation. Every time I try to call the 888-209 number, I get stuck in this never-ending phone tree that eventually disconnects me. I've probably called 50+ times in the last month! I've tried different times of day, different days of the week - nothing works. The website is no help - just says my claim is "pending review" but it's been that way for 7 weeks now. I need to speak to an actual human being about my claim. Does anyone have a direct number or extension to bypass this horrible automated system? I've got bills piling up and I'm about to get evicted if I don't get this resolved soon. The stress is making me physically sick.

I feel your pain. NY unemployment is a complete disaster. Was in the same position last year and couldnt get a human for weeks. It's crazy how they expect people to survive while they have us jumping through hoops.

•Did you eventually get through? How long did it take? I'm losing hope here...

•Yeah eventually... took me almost 2 months tho. And even then it was pure luck that someone picked up. The system is designed to frustrate us i swear 🤦♂️

After struggling for weeks trying to reach NY unemployment (and almost giving up), I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a live agent! They basically wait on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked in one day after being stuck for over a month! It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for weeks on my own. Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds too good to be true... has anyone else tried this?

•I was skeptical too but I was desperate. It actually works - they call the same number we all call but they have some system that stays on hold so you don't have to. When they get a real person they connect you.

•Sounds like an ad 🙄 Does it actually work or what?

•Not an ad lol. Just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. My back pay came through 2 days after I finally got to talk to someone.

•wait so does it just call the same number? how does that help if the line is always busy?

•They have some kind of system that keeps dialing and stays on hold. Idk exactly how it works but it saved me from having to do it myself for hours. Worth it to get my benefits finally.

Try calling right when they open at 8am. That's the only time I've ever gotten through. And make sure it's early in the week - Mondays and Tuesdays seem better than later days.

No direct number exists that I know of. They deliberately make it hard to reach them. I tried emailing through the contact form on the website and surprisingly got a response after 2 weeks. Not fast but at least something. Maybe try that too?

•Thanks, I'll try the email route too. Can't hurt at this point.

•Email is hit or miss. I sent 3 emails and only got a response to 1 of them. And it was just a generic form response that didn't help with my specific issue 😑

I had the same issue for months!!! ny unemployment is the WORST. What finally worked for me was contacting my state representative. Their office has special contacts at NYSDOL and can escalate your case. Google your district rep and call their office - they helped me break through the wall of silence.

•This ⬆️ 💯 My assemblyman's office got my issue fixed when nothing else worked.

•That's a really good idea, hadn't thought of that. Going to look up my rep right now.

•i tried this and my rep's office said they were swamped with unemployment cases and had a 3-week backlog just to look at new requests 😭

This is going to sound weird but try calling and selecting the Spanish language option. Then when you get a person just explain you hit the wrong button. I've gotten through faster this way several times. Not always but worth a shot.

•LMAO this is actually genius 🤣

•I used to work in a call center. This absolutely works because the Spanish queues are usually much shorter. The reps all speak English too.

OMG I LITERALLY JUST SOLVED THIS SAME PROBLEM YESTERDAY. Here's what you need to do to get through to NY unemployment: First, stop using the main number during peak hours. They're completely overwhelmed. Your best bet is to call at unusual times - I got through at 7:58am right before they officially open at 8am. Second, when you do call, have all your info ready - claim ID, last 4 of SSN, employment history dates. They'll ask for all this and if you're scrambling to find it, you might lose your spot. Third, if you still can't get through, use Claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold for you and calls when they get a human. I was skeptical but talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after weeks of frustration. Fourth, while waiting for all this to work, also email your state assembly person AND state senator. They have special contacts at NYSDOL. Send them your claim number, contact info, and a brief explanation. Fifth, document EVERYTHING. Every call, every attempt, every email. If you end up needing to appeal anything, this documentation helps. Good luck! The system is broken but with persistence you'll get through!

•That Claimyr thing really works? Seems sketchy to me

•It worked for me! I was desperate after 5 weeks of no payments. They just wait on hold and call you when they get someone. Then you talk directly to unemployment. Nothing sketchy about it - they don't ask for any personal info.

I heard if you keep pressing 0 repeatedly it will eventually connect you to a rep. Haven't tried it myself though.

•This is a myth. Tried it like 50 times. All it does is disconnect you faster 😒

Same boat! Been trying for weeks. The system is designed to make us give up. Stay strong and keep trying, thats all I can say.

The trick is to call on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 1:30-2:30pm. For some reason that's when the wait times are lower. Avoid Mondays like the plague - everyone calls on Monday.

•I second this! Mondays and Fridays are the WORST days to call ny unemployment. Tuesday afternoon worked for me.

Have you tried reaching out on Twitter? Sometimes publicly calling them out gets attention. Tag @NYSLabor in a tweet describing your situation.

•Haven't tried social media yet, that's a good idea. Going to tweet at them right now.

So frustrating! What fixed my issue was connecting with a live agent through claimyr.com after weeks of trying on my own. They call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when they get a human. It was the only thing that helped me finally get my account unlocked.

•I get the skepticism, I was the same way. But after 6 weeks of no benefits I was willing to try anything. And it actually worked - talking to an agent solved my issue in one call.

•So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my friend told me about this. Got a live person in about 90 minutes. Totally worth it.
