Desperate to reach NY unemployment - any secret numbers or tricks to bypass the wait?

I'm going insane trying to contact the unemployment office. I've been calling the main number every day for the past 3 weeks, sometimes 10-15 times a day, and either get disconnected or told that due to high call volume they can't take my call. I need to talk to someone ASAP because my payments suddenly stopped in February with no explanation. I checked my account online and there's some vague message about needing to verify identity, but no instructions on how to do it. I've tried emailing but got an automated response saying to expect delays of 4-6 weeks! I can't wait that long - rent is due next week and I've already borrowed money from family last month. Has anyone managed to actually speak to a human being there? Are there any direct lines or extensions that work? Or maybe certain times of day when it's less busy? I'm truly desperate at this point.

I feel your pain. The system is totally broken. I tried calling at 7:59 am exactly when they open and still got the 'high call volume' message. Even tried calling from different phone numbers thinking maybe they block repeat callers but nope, same result. The whole thing is a joke.

Same here. I even tried calling from my mom's phone thinking they mightve blacklisted my number or something lol. No luck. This system is designed to make us give up.

Bruh I heard they actually DO track numbers and limit how many times u can call in a day. Might be conspiracy but wouldn't put it past em 👀

I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through for weeks! Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically waits on hold for you and then calls you when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, totally worth it. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this? seems sketchy af

I was super skeptical too but was desperate. It actually worked tho - got a call back with an agent in about 2 hours. After weeks of trying myself, it was a game changer.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? i've wasted so much time already...

Yeah it worked for me! The service just holds your place in line and calls you when someone picks up. I finally got my identity verification sorted and backpay approved.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? I'm kinda desperate tho ngl

What's different is they don't claim to do anything magical - they just do the waiting for you. I'm just sharing what worked for me after being in the same frustrating situation 🤷‍♀️

Try calling exactly at 8:00 AM on Tuesdays or Thursdays. I noticed the system isn't as overloaded those days. Also, don't hang up if you get put on hold - I got through after 3.5 hours once. Just put it on speaker and do something else while waiting.

The NY unemployment system is DELIBERATELY designed to be difficult to navigate. They're hoping you'll just give up and stop claiming benefits. It's not a bug, it's a feature. I had to contact my state assembly person to finally get help. Look up who represents your district and call their office.

THIS!!! It's all intentional. The more ppl who give up, the less money they gotta pay out. Game's rigged from the start.

i never thought about going through my assembly person... how long did it take for them to help you?

It took about 10 days, which was still way faster than trying to get through directly. They have special contacts in the dept who can expedite issues.

Here's what I would recommend based on my experience with the same issue (identity verification hold): First, if you haven't already, upload ALL requested identity documents to your online account. Even if you're not sure what they want, upload your driver's license, social security card, birth certificate, and a utility bill. Better to have too much than too little. Second, if you absolutely need to speak with someone, I strongly recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). After wasting weeks trying to get through myself, I used them and got a callback with an actual agent in about 2 hours. The agent was able to see exactly what was wrong and fix it on the spot. My backpay hit my account 3 days later. Third, while waiting, send a detailed email explaining your situation to your state assembly person AND state senator. Include your claim ID number and contact info. They can sometimes escalate cases. Fourth, if you have Twitter, try tweeting @NYSLabor with your issue (don't include personal info). They sometimes respond to public complaints faster. Last resort: physically go to a career center in person. Bring all your documents and be prepared to wait, but they can sometimes help with unemployment issues. Hope this helps. The identity verification issue is unfortunately common right now.

thank you SO much for this detailed answer! i already uploaded my license and social security card, but not a utility bill - gonna do that now. i'll check out that claimyr site too because i'm beyond desperate at this point.

The career centers barely help with unemployment claims anymore fyi. They'll just tell you to call the same number 🙄

Call your local state representative's office! That's what finally worked for me after 5 weeks of getting nowhere. They have special contacts at unemployment and can escalate your case. It's literally what they're there for.

Have u tried pressing different options in the phone menu? Sometime if u select the employer option instead of claimant they pick up faster bc less ppl calling that line. Worth a shot.

I tried that and got transferred right back to the main menu 😭 They're onto that trick

Does anyone know if they respond to messages through the online portal? I've sent like 4 and haven't heard anything back in over a week.

They claim 5-7 business days but I waited 3 weeks for a response that just said to call them 🤦‍♀️ Complete waste of time

i got a response after 2 weeks but it was just a generic template that didn't actually address my question at all

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I swear they deliberately make it impossible to reach them. It's all about preventing people from getting benefits they're entitled to. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

Agreed 100%. It's designed to discourage people. same thing with all government benefits tbh

It's not a conspiracy, its just facts. They've cut staff but claims keep increasing. Do the math 🙃

yall sound paranoid af. they're just understaffed and overwhelmed like every other govt agency

"understaffed" for YEARS? at what point is it a deliberate choice rather than a temporary situation? 🤔

i gave up calling after two weeks and used claimyr.com - it calls for you and connects you with an agent when they pick up. was skeptical but it actually worked. got through to someone who fixed my identity verification issue right away.

im seeing a few people mention this service. might be my only option at this point. anything is better than calling constantly and getting nowhere

The identity verification thing is a HUGE problem right now with NY unemployment. My brother had the exact same issue. He had to send in his birth certificate, license, SSN card AND a utility bill. Did you get any specific instructions on what documents they need?

0 coins

-

Paolo Conti

nope, that's part of the problem! no specific instructions at all, just a vague message about identity verification needed. i'll try uploading more documents and hopefully that helps

That sucks, it's so frustrating when they don't tell you what they need. My brother ended up uploading literally every official document he had just to cover all bases 😂

I'm sorry your dealing with this nightmare. I was in ur same position last month - identity verification hold with no instructions. What finally worked for me was faxing (yes, FAXING in 2023 lol) my documents to them AND using claimyr.com to get someone on the phone who could confirm they received everything. Got my backpay within the week after that.

try calling right at 8am or around 6:30pm. those worked best for me. also if u hit 2 then 1 then 3 in the menu sometimes u can bypass some of the waiting. good luck!

Another day, another poor soul trapped in NY unemployment hell 😫 I've been there my friend. My advice - document EVERYTHING. Every call attempt, every email, every message in the portal. If you end up needing to escalate to a representative or ombudsman, having detailed records helps a ton.

-

Zoe Papanikolaou

THIS. I had to fight for 4 months of backpay and the only reason I won was because I had screenshots of every error message and logs of every call attempt.

so yea everyone's giving advice about how to reach them but let me tell u what happens when you DO reach them - they'll say they need to transfer you to a "specialist" and then you'll get disconnected 🙃 happened to me THREE TIMES.

-

Mei Lin

OMG YES this happened to me too! Finally got through after hours on hold only to be disconnected during "transfer" 😭 I wanted to throw my phone

that's why when i finally used claimyr.com I specifically asked the agent NOT to transfer me and to try handling it themselves. worked much better!
