Filed for ny unemployment in November but no backpay - how to actually get it?
I lost my job back in November and filed for unemployment right away. Its now April and I still havent received any payments at all. I thought maybe the system was just slow and my money would eventually show up but nope, nothing. Every week I certify like clockwork but my account balance stays at zero. I've tried calling probably 50 times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. The website is useless - says my claim is "pending" with no other info. I'm running out of savings and need this backpay desperately. Has anyone actually managed to get through to a real person who could help with backpay? Any tricks or specific times to call?

Have you tried checking your spam folder or junk mail? Sometimes they send important notices there and if you miss responding to something they freeze your account. Happened to me and I almost lost my mind.

•Yep checked all folders obsessively. Nothing from them requiring any action. My dashboard just says pending forever 😫

•they do this on purpose to save money...its all 💰 driven. They know most ppl will give up after a few weeks

•This happened to me too! Check if your address is correct in the system. They might be sending physical mail.

After banging my head against the wall for months with the same issue, I finally found Claimyr.com which basically gets you a callback with an actual rep. Got my entire backpay released within a week after talking to someone for like 15 mins. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast it was the only way I could actually talk to a live agent. Check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah it worked for me. they just call and wait on hold for you then connect you when someone picks up. saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music

•i was super skeptical too but i was desperate. its literally just an auto-dialer that waits on hold then calls your phone when a person answers. my backpay came through 4 days after i talked to someone

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? not falling for another unemployment 'hack'...

•the difference is it actually gets you to talk to a real NYSDOL person. they don't do anything except get you past the hold system. once you're talking to the agent, its just you and them sorting out your claim

I had the same issue last year. You need to call and specifically ask about "BACKDATE REQUEST". Don't let them transfer you or say they'll "note your account"... that does nothing! You need to specifically get them to submit a form for backdating your claim. Be nice but firm!

What payment method did you select when u filed? Direct deposit or debit card? If u selected debit card, sometimes they mail it to an old address. If direct deposit, double check your banking info is correct on file.

•I did direct deposit and triple checked my banking info is correct. The issue isnt how theyre sending it, its that theyre not sending anything at all 😔

•ok then u definitely need to talk to someone. sometimes they put random holds on accounts and dont tell u why. the system is brokennnn

Honestly the NY unemployment system is DESIGNED to be frustrating. They count on people giving up. You HAVE to get someone on the phone - it's the only way to fix backpay issues. The website/email is useless for this specific problem.

•💯 Facts! I worked in a call center before (not for unemployment) and we were told some callers would just give up which meant less work for us 🤡

•Yup. They KNOW their phone system sucks. Its not a bug its a feature

What I don't understand is why they take so long with everything these days?! It's 2023 and the system works like it's still 1993. My claim took 3 months to process and that was me calling EVERY DAY. They need to hire more people or update their antiquated systems.

•budget cuts + old systems + pandemic backlog = disaster. My cousin works in govt (not unemployment) and says their computers still run Windows 7 lolllll

Here's what actually WORKS for getting your backpay (I finally got mine after 3 months): First, document EVERYTHING. Print out all your weekly certifications. Second, you MUST talk to a real agent - not the automated system. The only way to resolve backpay is by speaking to someone who can manually review your account and submit the proper paperwork. Third, be persistent but polite. Explain you've been certifying since November and have received $0. Fourth, ask them specifically to check for "pending determinations" on your account. Often there's a single question or issue that's holding up the ENTIRE claim. Finally, if calling doesn't work, I had success using claimyr.com - they basically call for you and connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration and got my issue resolved in one call. Don't give up! The money is legally yours if you qualify!

•THANK YOU for such a detailed response. This is super helpful. I'm definitely going to try all this.

•This is accurate. There's almost always a "pending determination" that needs to be cleared. Had the same situation.

Have you tried contacting your local state representative? I was stuck for 2 months, then I emailed my assembly member, and magically my claim started moving again. They have special contacts in the dept who can help.

•ugh that's what I'm afraid of! did they tell you what was missing when you checked online?

Arjun Kurti
•nope! nothing showed up online. the agent was like "oh we need your W2 from 2021" and I was like WHY DIDNT U ASK FOR THAT BEFORE?? 🤬

Check your payment history on the website. If it shows payments were released but you didn't get them, it could be a banking issue. If it shows $0 then its a claim issue and you need to speak with someone.

•It shows absolutely nothing in payment history. Just blank.

•Yep then your claim is stuck somewhere in processing. Only a phone agent can fix this unfortunately. The system is soooo backed up still.

My wife works for another state agency (not unemployment) and she says the best time to call is Tuesday-Thursday between 8:30-10am. Mondays are swamped with weekend backlog and Fridays everyone is trying to get stuff fixed before the weekend.

try sending a message through the contact form on the website, AND call, AND email the general inbox. my claim was stuck and i literally did all 3 things daily for a week until someone finally fixed it. squeaky wheel gets the grease

•thx for the tip. did you use specific wording in your messages that seemed to help?

•i kept it simple but included all my info: "Filed claim on [date], have been certifying weekly since then, claim shows as pending, no payments received. Need immediate assistance with backpay for November-April.

Here's a weird trick that worked for me: call exactly at 7:58am, two minutes before they officially open. Sometimes you get through to the queue before everyone else starts calling at 8:00am sharp.

Did you upload all your identity documents? Sometimes they silently put a hold on your claim if they need to verify your identity. Check if there's a message on your account about uploading ID docs.

•Yes I uploaded everything when I first applied...license, SSN, etc. No messages or alerts about missing documents.

•super weird then. definitely sounds like you need to talk to someone. when i finally got through they fixed my similar issue in like 10 minutes
