Anyone actually getting paid on new ny unemployment claims filed in September?
I lost my job due to company downsizing in August and applied for unemployment benefits in early September. My claim was accepted and I've been dutifully certifying every week since then, but I haven't received a single payment yet. The system shows my claims as "processed" but nothing has hit my bank account. It's been over 5 weeks now and I'm getting really concerned since my savings are running low. The website doesn't show any issues or holds on my account. I've called the helpline at least 12 times but can never get through to an actual person - just endless automated messages. Has anyone who filed a new claim in September started receiving their payments yet? Is there a massive backlog or something else going on?

I filed in mid-september and just got my first payment last week. It took almost 6 weeks for me. The system is super backed up right now from what I heard. If your claim shows approved you should get it eventually, but the wait is killing everyone.

After trying for WEEKS to reach someone at ny unemployment, I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent! I was in the same boat - approved but no payments. Turns out there was a small issue with my employer verification that I couldn't see. The agent fixed it immediately and my backpay hit my account 2 days later. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast I wish I'd found this sooner. Try claimyr.com if you're desperate - it was the only way I could actually talk to a live agent. They also have this helpful video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch - they just call the unemployment line for you and stay on hold, then when a real person answers they connect the call to your phone. Saved me literally hours of hold time.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It actually works lol - they don't need any of your claim info or anything. They just dial and wait on hold for you. My issue was fixed in one 10-minute call after weeks of trying.

I used this too! Got connected in like 45 minutes when I'd been trying for days. The agent fixed my issue right away.

Nope, been waiting since Sept 3rd. Website says everything's fine but no $$$ yet. This is beyond frustrating. I've started driving for uber just to make rent but I shouldn't have to do that when I'm approved for benefits!! Starting to think the whole system is designed to make us give up 😡

THIS!!! They hope we just give up and stop asking for what we're owed.

Uber's not bad tho, I been making decent money while waiting. Better than nothing.

Yeah but I shouldn't HAVE to work uber when I'm entitled to unemployment benefits I paid into for years! The system is broken af.

Filed sept 10, got first payment oct 22. Took over a month but it eventually came through. They also backpaid everything. Hang in there but definitely try to get someone on the phone.

Did you do anything special to get it processed or did it just randomly start working?

Called like 30 times until I finally got through to someone. They said there was no issue, it was just taking time because of the backlog. Two days after I spoke to someone the money showed up.

Here's what I've learned after dealing with NY unemployment for the last 8 weeks (finally got paid last week): The system is incredibly backlogged right now. Claims that should take 2-3 weeks are taking 6-8 weeks minimum. There seems to be a massive staffing shortage at NYSDOL. If your claim shows as "processed" but you're not receiving payments, there's likely a hidden flag or issue on your account that only a representative can see and fix. The online system doesn't show these flags. The ONLY way to resolve these hidden issues is to speak with a live agent. This is deliberately difficult because they're understaffed and overwhelmed. After trying for weeks to get through on the phone lines (over 50 calls), I finally used claimyr.com - they call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when an agent answers. It cost money but it was worth every penny because the agent found a simple employer verification issue that was holding up my entire claim. Once you talk to an agent and they clear whatever invisible hold is on your account, the money usually comes within 2-3 business days including all back payments. Don't give up - keep certifying weekly even if you're not getting paid yet. When they finally fix it, you'll get all the back weeks at once. The system seems designed to be frustrating enough that people give up. Don't let them win.

This is the most helpful thing I've read in weeks. Thank you for spelling it out so clearly. Gonna try that service tomorrow.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation. The hidden flag thing makes total sense - the website shows nothing wrong but something must be stuck somewhere in their system.

can confirm, same thing happened to me. invisible "review" flag that only cleared when I talked to a person.

Does ANYONE know why they don't just TELL us there's an issue instead of making us guess?! 🤬

Because then they'd have to hire people to fix all the issues lol. It's cheaper to let us struggle and hope we go away.

Been waiting since Sept 7th. Called the automated line and it says my claim is "pending review" whatever that means. Anyone know how long the review process takes?

mine was "pending review" for 7 weeks, then suddenly changed to approved with no explanation. the whole system is a black box.

Reviews can take 4-8 weeks from what I've heard. It's completely ridiculous.

Same problem here. Applied Sept 12, been certifying every sunday without fail, but no payments. The stupid part is that there's no way to check what's wrong! My account doesn't show any issues, just says my weekly benefit amount and that I'm approved. Starting to wonder if the state is broke or something 👀

The state being broke was my first thought too lmao 🤣 But seriously I think they're just understaffed and can't handle the volume.

My friend works at a call center (not unemployment) and she said call centers everywhere are having massive staffing issues right now. Probably why we can't get through.

I filed in early September, got approved immediately, but didn't get any payments until last week. What worked for me was sending a secure message through the portal specifically mentioning that I'd been approved but hadn't received payment for X weeks. Got a response within 48 hrs and money the next day. Try that before spending hours on the phone!

Where exactly do you send a secure message? I looked everywhere on the site and couldn't find that option!

Log in to your account, go to Messages on the left menu, then "Compose New". Make the subject line clear like "Approved claim - no payments for 5 weeks"

omg I thought it was just me!! Filed Sept 20, got the determination letter saying I was approved for $483/week, but haven't seen a PENNY. Called the automated line and it says everything's fine. This is insane - do they think we don't need to eat or pay rent while they get their act together??

if the money is showing as "processed" but you're not getting it, check that your direct deposit info is correct. my friend waited 5 weeks only to realize she had put one wrong digit in her account number 🤦♀️

Just double-checked and my banking info is definitely correct. Good suggestion though.

Pro tip: call your state senator or assembly member's office! I was in the exact same situation, filed in September, nothing for weeks. Called my state senator's office and they have a dedicated person who deals with unemployment issues. They contacted NYSDOL on my behalf and within 3 days my claim was fixed. Their office said they're getting flooded with similar cases right now.

There's apparently a huge backlog of September claims. I called and finally got through after 2 hours on hold last week, and the rep told me they're dealing with a "processing delay" affecting thousands of claims. She didn't give a timeframe but said they're working through them in order. Not much help but at least explains why we're all in the same boat.

Honestly I just kept redialing at exactly 8:00am until I got in the queue. If you call even 5 minutes after they open, good luck.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my neighbor told me about this. It actually worked - they just dial and wait on hold so you don't have to. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Fixed my issue in one call.

It's not a hack lol. They literally just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. My issue was a simple verification thing that took 2 min to fix once I FINALLY spoke to someone.

i filed sept 5, finally got my first payment oct 16. just keep certifying every week and eventually it'll come through with back pay. the system is a disaster but they do eventually pay.

this is wut i did to finally get paid: 1) certified every single week no matter what 2) called the main number 50+ times until i got thru to a human 3) found out there was a random flag on my account for "identity verification" even tho i already verified everything 4) had to upload my drivers license AGAIN 5) got all my backpay 3 days later the whole system is a joke but be persistent. they hoping you'll give up.

Waiting since September 14th here. Called my ex-employer and found out they never responded to the DOL verification request, which is apparently holding up my claim. Now trying to get them to respond but they're dragging their feet. The whole system is ridiculous.

You should be able to get paid after 10 days even if employer doesn't respond. That's the law. You need to talk to an agent.
