Waiting 7+ weeks for first ESD payment - no check yet, normal or problem?

I filed my initial unemployment claim 7 weeks ago and haven't received a single payment yet. My weekly claims all show as 'processed - pending' in the system but no money has hit my account. I verified my identity through ID.me right away and uploaded all the required documents. The only communication I've gotten was an automated email saying my claim needed additional review, but that was 5 weeks ago. I'm starting to panic because my savings are almost gone. Is this normal processing time in 2025 or is something wrong with my claim? Anyone else waiting this long for their first payment?

Have you tried calling them? I've called like 20 times but can never get through. Always the 'high call volume' message and then it hangs up on me.

Your claim is stuck in adjudication. That 'additional review' message is the tipoff. ESD is seriously backlogged right now because of the tech sector layoffs. Normal processing is 3-4 weeks, but adjudication can add another 4-8 weeks easily. You need to call and speak with a claims specialist to find out exactly what's causing the delay - could be employment verification, separation issues, or just random system flags. Call right when they open at 8am for best chances.

Not always adjudication...could be identity verification issues too. I waited 9 weeks because my ID.me didn't properly connect to their system even though it showed complete on my end!!

After THREE MONTHS of waiting last year I finally called my state representative's office. They have a constituent services team that can escalate ESD issues. Miraculously, my claim was processed within 48 hours after they got involved. Don't wait as long as I did - find your rep and reach out NOW!!!

This worked for my neighbor too! The rep offices deal with ESD complaints all the time

If your claim says 'additional review' it's almost certainly in adjudication. There should be a fact-finding questionnaire in your ESD account that needs to be completed. Check under 'Notices/Letters' in your eServices account. If you've already completed everything, then you're just waiting for an adjudicator to review your case. Unfortunately, wait times are particularly long right now due to staffing shortages at ESD and the recent tech layoffs. One thing that helps is making sure you continue to file your weekly claims even while waiting. When they do approve your claim, they'll pay all the back weeks at once as long as you've filed for them. For faster processing, try to reach a claims agent directly to check if there's any specific information they're waiting for.

Thanks for the detailed info. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously and completed all questionnaires weeks ago. There's nothing in my account showing as incomplete or needing action. I just wish I could talk to someone to confirm everything's actually being processed and not just sitting in digital limbo.

I was in the exact same situation last month! Waited 8 weeks with no payment and couldn't get through on the phone. I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) after someone here recommended it, and they actually got me connected to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes. The agent found that my claim was stuck because my former employer contested it but never submitted their documentation. The agent was able to push it through that same day and I got paid for all back weeks three days later. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Seriously saved my sanity after weeks of stress.

That sounds promising! At this point I'd try anything to get through to a real person. Did you have to explain your whole situation from scratch when you finally reached someone?

No, that was the surprising part. The agent could see all my claim details and weekly certifications. She immediately found the issue (employer dispute) and explained exactly what was happening. Worth every penny not to spend another month in the dark.

This happens ALL THE TIME!! My issue was I put the wrong end date for my last job (was off by one day) and that triggered a manual review.

Quick update about current ESD timelines - I work with claimants regularly and can confirm that since the February system upgrade, initial claims are taking longer to process. Standard claims without issues are averaging 3-4 weeks for first payment, but anything that triggers adjudication is running 6-10 weeks right now. If your claim involves multiple employers, quit instead of layoff, or any earnings inconsistencies, you're looking at the longer end of that timeline. Keep filing your weekly claims and make sure your contact information is up to date in the system.

Thanks for this insight. Mine was a straight layoff (company downsizing) with just one employer for the past 3 years, so I'm not sure why it would be flagged for adjudication. I'm going to try Claimyr tomorrow morning to get through to someone who can tell me what's going on.

Yes, as long as you've been filing your weekly claims during the waiting period, you will receive payment for all eligible weeks once your claim is approved. This is true even if it takes months to resolve. Just make sure you don't miss any weekly certifications while waiting.

UPDATE: Finally got through to ESD this morning using Claimyr! The agent found that my claim was flagged for manual review because my employer reported a slightly different last day of work than what I entered (I put my last day in the office, they put the official termination date which was 2 days later). The agent updated it and said my payments should process within 48-72 hours. Such a relief to finally know what was happening! Will update when money arrives.

UNBELIEVABLE how a tiny 2-day discrepancy can hold up your benefits for nearly 2 MONTHS!!! This system is BROKEN but glad you're finally getting somewhere!!!

This is actually a very common issue. The system automatically flags any discrepancy between claimant and employer information, even minor ones. Glad you got it resolved! For anyone else reading this - always use the official last day of employment from your separation notice, not your last physical day at work, to avoid these delays.
