First time filing ny unemployment - 3 weeks later no payment after ID.me verification
I got laid off from my restaurant job in November and filed for unemployment for the first time ever on January 23rd. Completed the ID.me verification through video chat on January 29th. About 10 days later, received a monetary determination letter showing my weekly benefit amount of $385. Been faithfully certifying every single Sunday since then. Problem is, we're now almost 4 weeks from when I did the ID.me verification and I haven't received a single payment or any further communication. My account just says "pending" when I check online. No determination letter, nothing in the mail, just radio silence. Is this the normal timeline for first-time filers? Starting to get really worried since rent is coming up and I've been counting on this money.

Unfortunately thats pretty normal these days. I had to wait almost 5 weeks for my first payment after ID.me verification. The system is totally backed up. Keep certifying every week and eventually it'll come through (probably all at once). If you hit the 6 week mark with no change then def try calling.

•Thanks for the response. I'm hoping it doesn't take 6 weeks but at least it's good to know I'm not alone in this. Did you get all your backpay at once when it finally came through?

•Yep! Got all 5 weeks of backpay in one deposit. Was a nice surprise after being broke for so long lol. Hang in there!

•This is why the NY unemployment system is such trash 🗑️ Making people wait over a month for money they're legally entitled to when bills are due NOW

After waiting for 3 weeks like you, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual human at unemployment. Literally had a callback with a real agent in under an hour, and they fixed my claim on the spot! My payments started processing the next day. Best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing. Check out their explainer: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me. Was skeptical at first but I was desperate after being on hold for 4+ hrs multiple days. The agent I talked to resolved my issue in like 15 mins. My claim went from pending to paid by the next morning.

•sounds too good to be true tbh... the unemployment office can't even answer their own phones

•that's literally the point lol. This service just stays on hold FOR you, then connects you when a human finally picks up. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music 🤮

The system is completely broken. I had to wait 7 weeks for my first payment last year. Keep certifying every week and eventually you'll get a big lump sum payment for all the back weeks. It suuuuucks but there's not much you can do except wait.

YOU NEED TO CALL THEM! Seriously. Waiting will just make things worse. Something is probably holding up your claim - could be a simple issue they need to clear. I was in the exact same situation last April and waited 2 months thinking it would resolve itself. Turned out they needed to verify one piece of info and fixed it in 5 minutes once I actually got through on the phone.

•I've tried calling multiple times but can never get through. Just endless busy signals or the 'call back later' message. How did you manage to talk to someone?

•It took me literally 67 calls in one day. Start calling right when they open at 8am. Keep redialing. Eventually you might get into the hold queue but even then expect to wait 2+ hours. Its a complete nightmare but sometimes the only way to get it fixed.

•Try claimyr.com - it's what finally got me through after trying to call for weeks. They connect you with an agent without you having to wait on hold.

This is exactly what's happening to me right now!!! Been waiting 4 weeks since ID me verification, got the monetary determination letter but no actual payments. My bills are piling up and I'm getting really desperate. This system is a complete joke. 🤬

•Have you tried contacting them at all? I'm wondering if we should be proactive or just keep waiting.

•I've tried calling everyday for the past week. Either get a busy signal or the automated message saying call volume is too high. Im gonna try reaching out to my state representative tomorrow cause this is ridiculous.

Here's what I've learned after going through the NY unemployment system TWICE in the last year: 1. The ID.me verification often creates a 3-6 week delay for first-time filers 2. Most claims require manual review by an agent which is why everything takes forever 3. If you're at 4+ weeks with no payment, something is likely stuck and you NEED to speak with an agent 4. The online messaging system is basically useless - phone is the only way to get issues resolved 5. If you're desperate to reach someone, use claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and connect you with an agent when they pick up 6. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING - dates you certified, confirmation numbers, etc. 7. Contact your state representative if you hit the 6 week mark with no movement Don't give up! The system is designed to be frustrating but persistence pays off. When your claim finally processes, you'll get all back payments at once.

•This is super helpful, thank you. Do you know if there's a specific reason why the ID.me verification causes such a long delay?

•From what an agent told me, the ID.me system doesn't automatically update their internal system - someone has to manually verify and approve it in their system after you complete it. With the backlog of claims, this step alone can take weeks. Total design flaw.

•You seem to know a lot about this nightmare process. Did using claimyr actually help? Was considering trying it.

•Yep, Claimyr saved me weeks of frustration. I spent 3 days trying to call myself with no luck. Used their service and was talking to an agent within 40 mins. Issue fixed that same day.

this is totally normal but that doesnt make it ok!!! the system is designed to make people give up. i waited almost 8 weeks for my first payment. keep certifying every week and dont miss any or you'll mess up the process even more.

•8 weeks?! That's insane. How did you manage financially while waiting so long?

•credit cards and borrowed from family 😔 it was brutal. but when it finally came through i got all the back weeks at once. like $3400 in one deposit.

Check your spam folder! I had the same issue and turns out they had emailed me requesting additional info but it went to spam. Once I provided what they needed, payments started within a week.

I had the EXACT same problem in December. My claim was stuck in pending for weeks after ID.me verification. Turns out there was an identity verification flag on my account even though I had already done the ID.me process 🤦♂️ Had to call and have an agent manually remove the flag. Payments started flowing 2 days later. You definitely need to talk to someone.

•Honestly? I used claimyr.com after wasting days trying to call myself. They connected me with an agent and my issue got fixed in one call. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

Happened to me and my roomate both. Its DEFINETLY a system wide issue with the ny unemployment process. New claims are taking forever to process even with successful ID verification. Hang in there!

YSK: a monetary determination letter is NOT the same as claim approval. The monetary determination just tells you what your benefit amount would be IF your claim is approved. You still need to get actual claim approval before payments start. Keep certifying and be patient.

•That makes so much sense! I thought the monetary determination letter meant I was approved. Thanks for clarifying.

have you checked your payment history page on the website? sometimes the main page says pending but the payment history will show if payments are being processed

Lucas Turner
•I checked and there's nothing showing up in the payment history at all. Just blank.

•yeah that means they haven't started processing payments yet. somethings definitely holding up your claim and you need to talk to someone to fix it

My sister works for NYSDOL (not in claims processing tho) and she says they're still dealing with massive backlogs. First time claims with ID.me verification are taking 4-6 weeks minimum right now. It's not just you - the whole system is overwhelmed.

This might sound crazy but try messaging them on Twitter. I was stuck in pending hell for 5 weeks, DMed the NYSDOL Twitter account with my info (not publicly!!!), and magically my claim started moving 2 days later. Worth a shot.

Anna Stewart
•Wow really? Like just send a DM to the official account? Did they actually respond?

Mateo Warren
•Yep! They responded within 24 hrs asking for some info to look up my claim. Don't share your SSN or anything but they can search by name/DOB/address. Can't guarantee it works for everyone but it did for me!

lol welcome to NY unemployment where nothing makes sense and the rules are made up 🤡 Took me 9 WEEKS to get my first payment. The system is a joke. Absolutely broken. But yeah, sadly your timeline is pretty standard these days.

Look for a letter in the mail asking for additional information. This happened to me - waited 4 weeks with no payment, then finally got a letter asking for paystubs from my previous employer to verify wages. Sent those in and payments started 10 days later.

You're gonna have to call them bro. I wasted 2 months waiting for my claim to "process" only to find out they needed one piece of info from me that could have been resolved in 5 mins. The system won't tell you if something's holding up your claim - only a human can do that.

•That's what I'm afraid of. I've been trying to call but can never get through.

4 weeks is sadly the new "normal" for first time claims... but i wouldn't wait longer than that. keep certifying every week but also try to get someone on the phone to make sure there isn't a flag on your account holding things up.

Everyone saying "it's normal" is part of the problem. IT'S NOT NORMAL! It's completely unacceptable that NY unemployment makes people wait 4-8 weeks for benefits they need NOW. Contact your state representatives and complain. The system only changes when enough people raise hell about it.
