EDD claim stuck in 'pending' after part-time work - no identity/eligibility notice for a month

I started a seasonal job in retail that only gives me hours some weeks but not others. I applied for UI to cover the weeks with no work. Got my award letter in February, but here's where things get weird. First certification week I earned over my weekly benefit amount so no payment (totally expected). Second week I had zero hours so I certified promptly. That was 28 days ago and my claim has been stuck on 'pending' ever since. When I check my UI Online account, there's a message saying they need to verify my identity OR eligibility, but I've received NOTHING - no mail, no messages in the portal inbox, no emails explaining what they need from me. My identity was already verified through ID.me when I first applied! Is the system just glitching? Do I need to call them? Wait longer? I'm getting really anxious because my rent is due next week and I was counting on this payment.

This sounds exactly like what happened to me last month. The EDD system gets confused when you report wages in the first week after being approved. Their automated system probably flagged your claim for review because of the work pattern. You definitely need to call them - waiting won't fix this. The problem is getting through to an actual human at EDD is basically impossible these days. I spent two weeks trying to get through before I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. Worth every penny because the agent fixed my pending status right away. Check out their demo video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! Did the EDD rep explain why your claim got stuck? I'm wondering if there's something specific I need to explain when I finally reach someone.

I triple-checked all my entries! I'm super careful with reporting wages because I know they match it against what my employer reports. Everything was accurate.

This is a standard eligibility interview situation. When you have inconsistent work patterns (working one week, not working the next), the EDD system often automatically schedules an eligibility interview to confirm your availability for work. Their backlog for these interviews is currently 4-6 weeks. You should have received an interview notice with a scheduled date/time, but sometimes these notices get delayed or lost in the mail. Here's what you should do: 1. Check your UI Online inbox daily for any new messages 2. Call EDD's main line at 1-800-300-5616 to confirm if an interview has been scheduled 3. Make sure you continue to certify for benefits every two weeks even while pending 4. Check your mail carefully - sometimes these notices look like regular mail If you miss an eligibility interview, your claim could be disqualified, so it's important to be proactive.

Is this true even if they already verified identity through ID.me??? I thought once you did that verification you were good to go!

I went through this EXACT same situation in January! The EDD system has a known glitch that's been happening since they updated their systems in late 2024. When you certify with work in your first week followed by no work in the second week, it triggers an automatic review. Unfortunately, waiting doesn't help. I waited 6 weeks thinking they'd contact me, and nothing happened. When I finally got through on the phone, the representative was able to fix it immediately. She told me there was NO interview scheduled, just a system flag that needed manual review. The problem is that the system doesn't always generate the eligibility notices correctly. DO NOT WAIT. Call EDD as soon as possible. Make sure to call right when they open at 8:00 AM. Be prepared to redial 30-40 times to get past the "we're experiencing high call volume" message.

Oh wow, this is super helpful! So there might not even be an interview scheduled? That's frustrating but at least gives me a direction. I'll start calling tomorrow morning. Did you have to explain anything special to the rep when you got through?

dont waste ur time calling!!!! the EDD is a COMPLETE JOKE!!! i had this happen TWICE and both times they made me wait SIX WEEKS before they fixed it. the people on the phones dont know anything anyway. just keep certifying and eventually theyll pay u all at once. the government doesnt care about us at all!!!!!

This is incorrect advice. While EDD can be frustrating, ignoring a potential eligibility issue won't make it resolve itself. The system has specific protocols that must be followed, and proactive communication is always better than waiting. Many pending issues require specific documentation or verification that won't happen automatically.

This happened to me! Make sure you don't have any messages in your UI Online inbox that need a response. Sometimes they send questionnaires through the portal instead of mail. Also check your spam folder for emails from EDD. I missed an important notice because it went to spam.

There are two distinct issues that could be happening here, and they require different approaches: 1. If this is an identity verification issue: Check if you received any communication about completing additional ID verification beyond ID.me. Sometimes EDD requires secondary verification through their own system. 2. If this is an eligibility issue: This is more likely given your intermittent work pattern. EDD needs to confirm you're still meeting the availability for work requirements and that your job separation reason for the weeks you don't work qualifies for benefits. The most efficient solution is to contact EDD directly. While continuing to certify, call the main UI line (1-800-300-5616) between 8:00-8:15 AM when they first open. If you can't get through after several attempts, try their secondary number (1-833-978-2511) which sometimes has shorter wait times. When you reach a representative, specifically ask them to check for: 1. Any flags on your account 2. If an eligibility interview has been scheduled 3. What documents or information they're waiting for The representative can often clear these pending issues immediately if there's just a system flag. Don't wait for something to arrive in the mail if nothing has come after a month.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! I'll definitely ask about these specific things when I call. I'm going to try first thing tomorrow morning.

Quick update on my earlier comment - when you call, make sure you specifically say "I'm calling about a pending payment that hasn't been resolved for over 4 weeks" when you get to the menu options. This will route you to the right department. Also, have your claim information, last certification date, and work history details ready so you don't have to scramble when they ask questions.

This is super helpful! I was wondering which menu options to select. I'll definitely prepare all my information ahead of time too. Thanks!
