EDD payment stuck on pending 8 days after certification - normal waiting time?

I certified for my first UI payment last Sunday (April 9th) and my status is still showing as 'pending' in the UI Online portal. I thought payments were supposed to process within 2-3 days after certification? This is my first time on unemployment so I'm not sure if this is normal or if something's wrong with my claim. I received the approval letter about 3 weeks ago with my weekly benefit amount ($450), verified my identity through ID.me without any issues, and have been answering all the certification questions honestly. Do pending payments normally take this long to clear? Should I be worried at this point or give it more time? I've tried calling the customer service line a few times but keep getting the "we're experiencing higher than normal call volume" message and getting disconnected. Is there anything I can do to speed this up or at least find out why it's pending? My rent is due soon and I'm starting to get anxious about this...

Pending status for 8 days is a bit longer than normal, but not unheard of either. First payments sometimes take longer because they're reviewing your claim more carefully. A few things that could cause pending status: 1. They need to verify your last employer's info 2. There might be an eligibility interview scheduled that you haven't been notified about yet 3. They're checking your work search requirements 4. Sometimes the system flags random claims for additional review You should check your UI Online inbox to see if there are any messages or interview appointments. Also check your regular mail - EDD still sends important notices through regular post that might not show up in your online account.

Thanks for the info! I checked my UI Online inbox and there's nothing there, and I haven't received anything in the mail either. How long should I wait before really starting to worry? I don't want to miss something important if there's an issue with my claim.

mine was stuck on pending for 3 whole weeks last month!!! the system is completely broken tbh. when i finally got throuhg to someone they said it was because my former employer contested my claim saying i quit (which i didnt, they reduced my hours to like 5 a week which is constructive dismissal). had to do an eligibility interview but then got all my backpay at once. keep trying to call!!

Oh no, that sounds stressful! My employer shouldn't contest anything since I was laid off, but I guess you never know. Did you do anything special to actually get through on the phone? I've tried calling at different times of day but still can't reach anyone.

After certifying for benefits, payments typically process within 24-48 hours if everything is in order with your claim. Since you're past that window and still showing pending, something is likely holding up your claim. Common issues for first payments: - Wages need verification - Identity verification not fully processed (even if you completed ID.me) - Former employer hasn't responded to EDD's inquiry - Eligibility issue flagged during certification I'd recommend trying to contact EDD ASAP rather than waiting. The pending status rarely resolves itself without intervention once it's been more than a week. Did you answer 'yes' to any questions during certification that might trigger a review? (Like being unavailable for work, refusing work, being sick, traveling, etc.

I answered 'no' to all those questions - I was available for work, didn't refuse any work, wasn't sick, and didn't travel. I'm definitely going to try contacting them, but like I mentioned, I can't get through on the phone lines at all.

I had this exact same issue in January! Called like 47 times and couldn't get through. Finally i used this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. It basically calls EDD for you and then connects you when someone picks up. Saved me so much frustration. The website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Turns out my account was flagged for additional verification because I had worked in 2 different states in the past 18 months. The rep fixed it right away and my payment switched from pending to paid within hours. Definitely worth talking to someone directly instead of waiting.

It worked for me! They don't ask for any sensitive info about your claim or SSN or anything like that. They just need your phone number so they can call you back when they get an EDD rep on the line. I was skeptical too but got desperate after trying for days to get through.

EVERYONE is having this problem right now!!! EDD is COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED and they're deliberately putting claims on pending to buy themselves time. They did this to me FOUR TIMES last year. It's absolutely CRIMINAL how they treat people who are already stressed about being unemployed!!! The truth is you HAVE to call and keep calling until you get through. It's the ONLY way to get your money. They'll never fix it automatically - they're hoping you'll give up. The whole system is designed to discourage people from collecting benefits they've EARNED and are ENTITLED TO!!

While EDD is definitely overwhelmed, I don't think they're deliberately putting claims on pending to discourage people. That's a bit conspiratorial. There are legitimate review processes that take time, especially for first payments. That said, I do agree that calling is usually the fastest way to resolve pending payments.

Maybe not deliberately, but they sure aren't fixing their broken systems either!! I've been through this rodeo 3 times now and it's ALWAYS the same story. They could easily add more staff or improve their technology but they DON'T because it saves them money when people give up!!!

Hi there - I worked at EDD for 8 years and can share some insights. First payments often take longer because they're subject to additional verification. Eight days is longer than ideal but not yet in the danger zone. Here's what I recommend: 1. Wait until you hit the 10-day mark before really worrying 2. Check your UI Online account daily, especially the Notifications tab 3. Look for any correspondence in both your online inbox AND physical mail 4. Try calling right when they open (8:00 AM) as that's when wait times are shortest If you certified on Sunday (April 9th), today would actually be considered business day 6 since weekends don't count for processing. If you haven't received any notices requesting additional information, it's most likely just in the standard review queue.

Thank you so much for the insider perspective! That makes me feel a bit better. I'll wait until the 10-day mark and keep checking both online and my mail. Do you think it would be better to call on a specific day of the week when they might be less busy?

Tuesday through Thursday tends to be slightly better than Mondays or Fridays. Mondays are usually swamped because of everyone who couldn't get through over the weekend, and Fridays can be busy with people trying to resolve issues before the weekend. Mid-week around 10:30-11:30am can sometimes have slightly lower call volumes than other times.

I feel your pain waiting for that first payment! When I lost my restaurant job last year I was checking my UI Online account like 5 times a day hoping to see it change from pending to paid. What finally worked for me was calling the 833 number instead of the main 800 number. Sometimes the different phone lines have different wait times. Also try calling at exactly 8:01am when they first open. btw i'm curious did you get the letter with your award amount in the mail or just online? i'm trying to help my cousin who just filed and he's wondering how he'll get notified.

Thanks for the tip about the 833 number - I'll try that! I actually got my award letter both in the mail and in my UI Online inbox. It took about 10 days after I filed my initial claim to receive it. I hope that helps your cousin!

Update us when your status changes! This kind of information is really helpful for other members going through similar situations. The more data points we have about current processing times, the better we can help each other navigate the system.

Will do! I'm going to try calling tomorrow morning as suggested, and I'll definitely post an update once there's any change in my status. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice and support - it's been really reassuring to know I'm not alone in this!
