EDD payment stuck on pending after certifying for 2 weeks - normal wait time?

Just certified for my biweekly unemployment benefits for the first time last Sunday, and my payment status is still showing as 'pending' in UI Online. It's been 13 days now and I'm getting worried. My rent is due next week and I was counting on this money. Is this normal for a first-time certification or is something wrong with my claim? I've tried calling EDD at least 15 times but can't get through - just get the 'maximum calls reached' message every time. How long should pending status typically last? I answered 'no' to all the questions about refusing work, being able and available, etc. Thanks for any insight!

its totally random tbh. my first payment took 3 days but my brothers took almost a month!! EDD is weird like that. did u check if there's any message in ur inbox? sometimes they need more info but don't tell u directly

Thanks, I checked my UI Online inbox and there's nothing there. No notifications or messages asking for anything. That's why I'm so confused!

The typical pending period for a first certification is usually 3-5 business days, but the first payment can sometimes take longer because EDD is verifying all your information. However, 13 days is definitely on the longer side. A few things to check: 1. Look at your claim history - is there any notation about an eligibility interview or identity verification? 2. Check if any certification questions were answered in a way that might trigger a review (like reporting income or being unavailable) 3. Verify your identity verification through ID.me was fully completed and linked to your EDD account If everything looks good on your end, you likely need to speak with an EDD representative to see what's holding up your claim.

My claim history just shows "pending" with no other notes. No mention of interviews or identity verification issues. I double-checked my ID.me verification and it says it's complete. And I answered all certification questions with "no" (no income, no refusing work, etc). I'm just so frustrated I can't get through to anyone!

HAHAHA welcome to EDD hell! My first payment took 6 weeks to clear from pending and I had to call them 47 TIMES before I got through. The system is DELIBERATELY designed to be impossible to navigate. They're hoping you'll just give up!!

That's not helpful and not entirely accurate. The system is overwhelmed, not deliberately obstructive. But yes, getting through to EDD is very challenging right now.

Hey there, I was in this exact situation last month! My pending payment finally went through after 16 days with no intervention from me. Sometimes their system just gets backlogged, especially with first-time claims. But I wouldn't wait forever - if you hit the 3-week mark, you definitely need to get through to a rep. I was going crazy trying to call them until I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that connects you with EDD without having to redial constantly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It got me connected to a rep in about 25 minutes instead of days of trying. The rep cleared my pending payment on the spot once I explained the situation. Sometimes the system just needs a human to push it through.

Thank you! I'm going to try waiting until Monday (that will be just over 2 weeks), and if it's still pending, I'll look into that service. I'm just so anxious because bills are piling up.

Are you on regular UI or are you on disability (SDI)? The waiting periods are different. Also, did you do your certification completely online or by phone/mail? The processing times vary based on method.

I'm on regular UI - filed after being laid off from my warehouse job. I certified online through UI Online, not by phone or mail. Everything was done digitally including ID.me verification.

Ok that's helpful. For regular UI with online certification, pending status beyond 7 days usually indicates there's something specific holding it up. In my experience, it's almost always something that requires speaking to a tier 2 specialist to resolve. The online system doesn't always display the real issue.

Sometimes pending payments are related to a quarterly review of your claim or because they need to verify your identity again (even if you already did ID.me). I recommend doing two things: 1. Check if your benefit year began right around a calendar quarter change (Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct) as this often triggers reviews 2. Call exactly at 8:01am when they open - this increased my chances of getting through Worst case, your payment should automatically clear after 21 days if there's no actual issue, but that's a long time to wait when you need money for rent.

My benefit year started in February, so not at a quarter change. I'll try calling right when they open on Monday morning. That's a good tip, thanks!

i had this happen an my payment was pending for 23 days!!! i finally got thru to EDD and they told me it was because i typed my middle initial in my name when i certified but my actual claim didnt have my middle initial. like seriously?? such a small thing but they couldn't fix it automatically. check for any tiny discrepancies like that maybe

Wow, that's crazy! I don't think I have any name discrepancies, but I'll double-check all my info. So frustrating that something so small could hold everything up for weeks!

My son had his first payment stuck for 3 weeks and we found out it was because he answered yes to being too sick to work ONE DAY during certification because he had food poisoning. The EDD rep immediately fixed it and the money came the next day. Did you answer yes to ANY questions during certification?

I went back and looked at my certification answers again, and I definitely answered NO to all those questions (being unable to work, refusing work, etc). I was super careful because I heard those questions can trip people up.

Based on everything you've shared, it sounds like this is likely a technical hold that requires manual review. This unfortunately means you'll need to speak with an EDD representative to resolve it. A common reason for first payments to get stuck in pending without obvious explanation is that your wage information may need manual verification, especially if you worked for multiple employers during your base period. Keep certifying on schedule even if the payment is pending. Once they resolve whatever is causing the hold, all your eligible weeks should be paid at once.

Thank you - that's reassuring. I'll make sure to keep certifying on time. I did work for two different employers last year, so maybe that's triggering some extra verification. I'll try calling Monday morning at 8:01am sharp!

Just wanted to follow up - did your payment ever clear? I'm curious because mine eventually went through automatically, but I've heard from others who had to call to get it fixed.

Update: It finally changed from pending to paid this morning! Took exactly 15 days. No idea why it was held up for so long, but I'm just relieved. Thanks everyone for your advice and support!

Great news! The first payment is often the slowest - future certifications should process much faster now that your claim is fully established in their system. Glad it worked out without having to call!
