EDD direct deposit pending for a week after certification - normal wait time?
Just filed my first unemployment claim ever and certified for benefits last Sunday. My UI Online account is showing 'pending' status for payment, but nothing has hit my bank account yet. I set up direct deposit when I first applied three weeks ago. Is this normal? How long does EDD usually take to process the first payment after certification? Getting kinda worried since rent is coming up soon...

First payments typically take longer than subsequent ones. EDD usually processes payments within 24-48 hours after certification IF everything in your claim is clear. But since this is your first payment, they're likely doing additional verification. I'd say give it another 3-5 business days before worrying too much. Your status showing 'pending' rather than 'disqualified' is actually a good sign!

•Thanks for the info! Is there any way to check what's causing the delay? My claim history just says pending with no other details.

Mine took 10 days for the first payment to process and hit my account after I certified!!! I was FREAKING OUT thinking I did something wrong but apparently first payments always take longer. The pending status is normal, but if it goes past 2 weeks definitely call them. Just be prepared to try 50+ times to get through 😫

•Wow 10 days?! That's so long. Did your status stay as 'pending' that whole time or did it change to 'paid' before you got the money?

Here's what's likely happening: EDD is validating your identity and employment history before releasing the first payment. This is standard procedure. The system also checks for any potential issues like overlapping claims or unreported income. Your payment status should change from 'pending' to 'paid' before the direct deposit hits your account. You can check this under 'Payment Activity' in UI Online. If it changes to 'paid' but you don't receive the deposit within 48 hours, then contact your bank to confirm they haven't placed a hold on the deposit.

•exactly what happened to me. First payment took 9 days but every payment after that was only 2-3 days after certifying. The pending to paid status change doesn't automatically mean it's deposited tho - there's usually a 1-2 day lag between when it shows paid in the system and when money actually hits your account

•That makes sense. I'll keep checking the Payment Activity section. Is there any way to expedite this process? Really need this money ASAP.

I was in the exact same boat last month! First payment took 8 days which felt like FOREVER. Everything after that was super fast though (2 days max). Hang in there!

If you need to contact EDD, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. After spending days trying to get through EDD's phone system with no luck, I tried their service and got connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They basically call EDD for you and when they get through, they connect you. Saved me so much frustration! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

One more thing to note - if this is your first benefit payment ever, EDD might issue it on their Money Network debit card instead of direct deposit, even if you requested direct deposit. This is a security measure they sometimes implement. You might want to watch your mail for the card. Subsequent payments would then follow your direct deposit preference. If that's the case, you can transfer funds from the card to your bank once you receive it.

•Wait really? That would explain why nothing's showing up in my account. How long does it usually take for the card to arrive?

The Money Network card typically takes 7-10 business days to arrive by mail after your first payment is processed. If your online status changes from 'pending' to 'paid' but you don't see a direct deposit, this is likely what happened. Once you get the card, you can set up transfers to your bank account or continue using the card (it works like a regular debit card). For future payments, the direct deposit should work as expected. If your status doesn't change from 'pending' to 'paid' within the next few days, that's when you should try contacting EDD directly.

•Just checked again and it switched from 'pending' to 'paid' an hour ago! Guess I'll wait for that Money Network card in the mail. Thanks everyone for your help!
