Why is my EDD payment stuck on 'pending' after first certification? No money received
I just certified for unemployment benefits for the first time yesterday (covering Jan 2-15, 2025). The status in my UI Online account shows 'pending' for both weeks, but no payment has hit my account yet. I was expecting it to process right away since I heard most people get paid within 24 hours of certifying. Does 'pending' mean there's a problem with my claim? Do I need to contact EDD? This is my first time on unemployment after getting laid off from my restaurant management job, so I'm not sure what's normal. Really stressing about bills coming due next week.

'Pending' just means they're reviewing your certification before approving payment. First-time certifications often take longer to process - sometimes 3-5 days instead of the usual 24-48 hours. Did you answer 'yes' to any questions about refusing work, being too sick to work, or traveling? Those can trigger manual reviews. Also, if you reported any earnings, they'll verify those first. I wouldn't worry unless it stays pending for more than a week.

•Thanks for the info! I did answer 'yes' to being sick for 2 days during the first week (had a bad cold). Maybe that's why it's taking longer? Should I call them to explain or just wait it out?

Actually, there's potentially something wrong. EDD is extremely backed up right now after their system "upgrade" in December. My first certification went to pending too and stayed that way for THREE WEEKS until I finally got through to a rep. Turns out there was an identity verification flag on my account that needed to be cleared. I'd recommend trying to get through to them ASAP rather than just waiting - the system won't automatically fix whatever's holding it up!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you just call the main number? I've been trying 833-978-2511 all morning and can't get through...

If you marked 'yes' to being sick, that will almost always trigger a hold on your payment. The system flags it because technically you're supposed to be 'able and available' for work each day you claim benefits. Since this is your first certification, they'll likely want to talk to you about those sick days. I had to deal with this same issue last year. You need to call and speak with a tier 2 specialist who can remove the pending status. The problem is actually getting through to someone. I spent 3 weeks trying before I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you get through to an EDD rep quickly - saved me from waiting another month for my payment. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once you get through, just explain honestly about your sick days. If it was only 2 days and you were available the other days, they'll usually release the payment.

•Thank you! This makes a lot of sense now. I'll check out that service because I really can't wait weeks for this to resolve. Bills are coming due and I need this sorted ASAP.

I work for an advocacy group that helps people with EDD issues. Here's what you need to know about "pending" status: 1. First certifications typically take 3-7 days to process, not 24 hours 2. Answering "yes" to being sick automatically flags for review (as others mentioned) 3. January tends to be EDD's busiest month with slowest processing times 4. You have two options: wait it out (could be 7-14 days) or contact EDD If you need the money urgently, calling is your best option. When you get through, ask specifically for a "conditional payment" while they review your certification. Since it's only 2 sick days, they can often approve this while the formal review happens. Pro tip: Call right when they open (8:00am) or during their least busy time (1:30-2:30pm). Have your claim ID and last 4 of SSN ready before calling.

•This is super helpful, especially the tip about asking for a conditional payment. I'll try calling during the times you suggested. Thank you so much!

•Yes you can still certify even with pending payments! Always certify on time no matter what's happening with previous weeks

•No, everything was above board with proper payroll. I was an assistant manager at a corporate restaurant chain, so everything was documented with regular paystubs and tax withholding.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get your pending status resolved? Usually by now (it's been a few days since your post) first-time pending issues get cleared automatically.

•Yes! Thanks for checking back. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned to get through to EDD yesterday. The rep said the sick days did flag my certification, but since it was only 2 days, she was able to clear it right away. The payment switched to paid within an hour of the call and hit my account this morning. Such a relief!
