EDD payment stuck on pending after midnight certification - used to be immediate

Just certified for my weekly benefits at midnight, but my UI Online account still shows 'pending' status this morning. I'm confused because back in 2023 when I was on unemployment before, my payments would switch to 'paid' almost immediately after certifying. I recently got approved for a new claim and received my first payment without issues, but this is the first time I'm certifying for this claim. In my claim history, both weeks show 'pending' with $0.00 authorized amount. Is this normal now? Did EDD change their processing times? I'm getting worried because my rent is due soon, and I was counting on this money.

Really? 3-4 days? That's so much longer than before. Do you know if there's anything I can do to speed it up?

This is actually normal now. EDD implemented additional review processes in 2024, and most first certifications on new claims go through an automated review that can take 24-72 hours. If this is your very first certification on this new claim, that's likely what's happening. As long as you don't have any eligibility issues, it should change to 'paid' status within 3 business days. For future certifications, the process usually speeds up once your claim pattern is established in their system.

Thank you so much for explaining! That makes sense. I'll try to be patient then and wait the 3 days. Does this happen with every new claim or just the first time ever?

This typically happens with each new claim, not just your first-ever claim. EDD's system treats each new benefit year as a fresh start requiring verification. After the first 2-3 certifications on a new claim, the process usually becomes much faster as long as there are no work or earnings issues reported.

I had the same EXACT problem last month!!! Certified at midnight thinking the money would be there the next day like it used to be years ago, but nope - stuck on pending for FIVE DAYS!!! Called EDD like 57 times and couldn't get through until I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. The rep told me they have new fraud prevention measures that sometimes flag first certifications. He fixed it right on the spot and my payment went to paid status that same day. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or go to claimyr.com - totally worth it when you're freaking out about rent!

It's legit! They don't access your EDD account or anything. They just use a system that keeps calling EDD until they get through, then they connect you directly with an EDD representative. I was skeptical too but it worked when I was desperate.

Did u report any work or earnings when u certified? That will ALWAYS put it in pending until they manually review it. Happened to me all the time when I was doing gig work.

No, I didn't have any work or earnings to report for these weeks. I was laid off and haven't found anything yet. But that's good to know for the future if I pick up part-time work.

Something everyone's missing - your screenshot shows both weeks are pending. That's actually a good sign because when there's an eligibility issue, usually only one week gets stuck. When both are pending together, it's typically just a processing delay. I bet they'll both switch to paid at the same time, probably tomorrow or Wednesday. The system batches payments differently than it did in 2023.

Oh! I hadn't thought about that distinction. That makes me feel a lot better. I'll wait until Wednesday before really worrying then. Thanks for pointing that out!

I always certify sunday morning instead of midnight and my payments go thru faster. Midnight certification = more competition in the queue = longer wait. Try it next time!

thats not how computers work lol EDD processes everything in batches not one at a time

Maybe not, but it's ALWAYS worked better for me! I've been on and off unemployment for years and there's definitely a pattern. Sunday 10am certification = Monday payment. Midnight certification = Wednesday payment. Just sharing what worked for ME.

Quick update for you - as of the July 2025 updates to UI Online, EDD now displays an estimated processing date for pending payments. Click on the transaction details for each pending certification, and at the bottom you should see "Estimated processing completion: [date]" which will give you a better idea of when to expect the payment to process.

Thanks so much! I just checked and it says estimated processing completion is tomorrow. That makes me feel so much better having an actual date to look forward to instead of just wondering!

Anyone notice that EDD payments always get delayed right before holidays or at the end of the month when everyone's rent is due? It's like they KNOW exactly when we need the money most!!! 🙄
