EDD payment delay after certification - how long is normal in 2025?

So I just certified for my UI benefits on Sunday 5/28 and my payment status is still showing as 'pending' on my account. It's now Wednesday and I'm starting to worry since my rent is due soon. In the past, I usually got paid within 1-2 days after certifying, but this time it seems different. Has the EDD payment timeline changed recently? I'm a first-time claimant in 2025 after getting laid off from my restaurant management job in April. Just wondering what the normal processing time is nowadays and when I should actually start to panic. Is 3+ days normal or should I be calling someone?

Jst wait it out. Mine always takes 3-4 days now. Used to be faster but EDD is slower these days lol

Thanks but I'm getting really nervous because I have bills due tomorrow. Did something change with their system recently?

The standard processing time is typically 24-48 hours after certification, but there are several factors that could be causing delays: 1. If this is your first payment on a new claim, it can take longer 2. If you reported any earnings during certification 3. If there are any identity verification issues pending 4. If you have a phone interview scheduled Check your UI Online homepage for any notifications or messages that might explain the delay. Do you see any alerts or pending issues listed?

I don't see any alerts, but it is my first payment. I didn't report any earnings, and I did the ID.me verification when I applied. Is there a way to speed it up? I'm getting really worried.

This EXACT same thing happened to me last month!! I certified on a Sunday and didn't get paid until FRIDAY! I was freaking out the whole time thinking I did something wrong on my certification. The EDD system is so broken. They expect us to report everything perfectly on time but then take forever to pay us. SO FRUSTRATING!

Oh no, Friday would be terrible timing for me. Did they ever explain why it took so long? Did you have to call them or did it just eventually process?

first payments always take longer, sometimes up to 10 days. they don't tell you that anywhere tho. the system is designed to make us suffer i swear

That's not entirely accurate. First payments typically take 3-5 days to process, not 10 days. But you're right that they should communicate the timeline better. The delay is usually because first payments go through additional verification steps.

Since this is your first payment after filing a new claim, the delay is normal. The first payment often takes 3-5 business days because it goes through additional verification processes. Since you certified on Sunday (5/28), you should likely see payment by Friday (6/1). If your payment doesn't appear by Monday, then you should contact EDD. When checking your UI Online account, make sure you're looking at the Payment Activity section, not just the Claim Summary. Some people mistake the Claim Summary information for payment status. Also, have you set up your payment preference (Money Network card or direct deposit)? That can affect timing too.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I set up direct deposit when I filed my claim. I've been checking the Payment Activity section and it still shows as pending. I really hope it processes by Friday as you mentioned.

If you need to get through to EDD quickly, try using Claimyr.com - it helped me finally reach a representative when I had a similar payment delay issue. They have a service that connects you with EDD without having to redial hundreds of times. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with was able to see exactly why my payment was delayed and pushed it through the same day. Saved me so much stress!

I used Claimyr too last month when my certification got stuck. The service actually worked but the EDD rep told me for first payments there's nothing they can do to speed it up - it's an automatic process. But at least I got a clear answer instead of wondering and stressing.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try this if I don't see anything by Friday. Did you have to provide them with your EDD account info or anything?

I triple-checked everything before submitting. I answered 'yes' to looking for work and listed my job search activities. I didn't report any income since I'm completely unemployed right now.

Just wanted to follow up - it's now Friday. Has your payment status changed? If it's still pending and you need immediate assistance, calling EDD directly is your best option. The technical support line (833-978-2511) often has shorter wait times than the regular line and they can transfer you to a claim specialist if needed. If your payment doesn't process by Monday, it might indicate there's an underlying issue with your claim that needs addressing.

Great news! It just switched to paid this morning and says the money should hit my account by tomorrow. Looks like it was just the normal processing time for a first payment like many of you mentioned. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!
