Stuck after ID.me verification for NY unemployment - has anyone gotten a callback?
I recently got laid off from my job at the end of October and applied for unemployment benefits. After completing my initial application, I was prompted to verify my identity through ID.me. I went through the whole process including the video call with a representative who told me someone from unemployment would contact me within 3-4 business days. It's been over two weeks now, and I haven't heard anything. I can't access my account online to check the status - it just redirects me to a message saying my identity verification is pending. Every time I call the unemployment office, I either get disconnected or stuck in an endless loop of automated messages. Has anyone else been through this identity verification process and actually received a callback? I'm starting to get really worried since my savings are running low and I have bills coming up next week.

Yep, dealing with the exact same thing. Did my ID.me stuff on November 5th and was told 5-7 business days for a callback. I'm now on day 13 with no contact. I've called the office like 25 times and either get hung up on or transferred to a voicemail that's full. The NY unemployment system is completley broken.

•Thanks for sharing, at least I know I'm not alone in this nightmare. How are you managing financially while waiting? I'm getting pretty desperate here.

•barely surviving tbh... using credit cards for groceries and borrowed money from my sister for rent. this shit is ridiculous.

•They told me 5-7 days too, but it ended up being almost 3 weeks before anyone contacted me. The whole system is held together with duct tape and prayers 🙄

After trying to get through for weeks with no luck, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. They stayed on hold for me and then called my phone when an agent was on the line. Talking to a live person got my benefits released within 48 hours. Best money I ever spent after dealing with this ID.me nightmare for weeks! Check out this video for more info: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds too good to be true. Are you sure this isn't a scam? Did they ask for your personal info?

•Not a scam at all! They literally just call the unemployment office and wait on hold so you don't have to, then transfer the call when someone answers. They don't need any of your personal unemployment info. I was skeptical too but was desperate after 3 weeks of trying.

•How long did you have to wait for the callback? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point...

•Got the callback in about 2 hours. Way better than the days I wasted trying to get through myself. My claim was processed the same day after talking to the agent.

•just watched that video and it actually makes sense... might give this a try tomorrow cuz I'm going crazy waiting

•Sounds like another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol. Has anyone else tried this or just this one person?

•I used it last month. It's literally just a service that waits on hold for you. Nothing fancy but it saved me hours of hold music and getting hung up on.

I went through something similar in August. After my ID.me verification, I waited for 18 days with no contact. Finally, I reached out to my state assembly member's office and explained my situation. Their constituent services helped push my case through and I got a call from unemployment within 48 hours after they intervened. Try contacting your local representative - they can sometimes cut through the red tape.

The ID.me verification is a NIGHTMARE. took me 6 attempts to get through because my internet kept cutting out during the video call 😡 then waited almost 3 weeks for callback. FINALLY got approved but only after I harassed them daily. my advice? call exactly at 8:00am when they open - its still hard to get thru but thats how I finally did it. or try that claimyr service someone else mentioned, my buddy used it and said it worked.

•Thanks for the tip about calling right when they open. I've been trying at random times during the day. Did you use a specific phone number that worked better than others?

•i used the main number 888-209-8124 but the trick is to press 9 to repeat the options and then press 3 immediately after. sounds weird but sometimes it bypasses the 'we're too busy' message. good luck!

•omg the 9 then 3 trick actually works sometimes! I thought I was the only one who discovered this 😂

Look, here's what you need to know about the whole ID.me situation with NY unemployment: - The verification backlog is HUGE right now. What they say is 5-7 days is realistically 2-4 weeks for most people - Your claim is still active even while waiting for verification, and you'll get backpay once approved - There are three ways to speed things up: 1) Contact your state representative/assembly member (this worked for me) 2) Use a service like claimyr.com to get through on the phone (several friends had success with this) 3) Try the unemployment office's alternate number: 888-783-1370 (sometimes less busy) The system is incredibly backed up because of all the identity theft and fraud cases they're dealing with. They've added extra verification steps which has created this bottleneck. Don't give up - keep certifying weekly if you can, even if it seems like nothing is happening. Once you get through to someone, things move quickly. Good luck!

•This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't realize I should still be trying to certify weekly. I'll try contacting my assembly member tomorrow.

•I second the claimyr.com recommendation. After 3 weeks of getting nowhere, I used them and spoke to an agent same day who fixed everything. Worth every penny considering how much backpay I was owed.

•That alternative number is clutch! I just called and while still on hold, at least I got into the queue instead of being hung up on!

This ID.me stuff is a total disaster. My mom is 62 and not tech savvy. She tried 5 times to do the video verification and kept getting disconnected. System is discriminating against older people and those without good internet or smartphones.

•This! My grandpa literally couldn't complete it and gave up on his benefits entirely. NY unemployment has completely failed vulnerable populations.

•I helped my neighbor who's elderly go through the process. If your mom needs assistance, they actually have an option to help people who are struggling with technology. Call and specifically ask for tech support with ID.me.

Anyone know if there's a way to check your verification status without calling? The website is useless and just keeps sending me in circles.

•Nope. That's the most frustrating part. You're basically in limbo until they decide to contact you. The online message center doesn't even work for this.

•I found a workaround! Log in to your NY.gov ID account (not the unemployment portal), go to message center, and submit a general inquiry asking about status. I got a response within 2 days this way.

i got through to someone last week after dealing with this ID.me hell. here's how: 1. called at 7:58am exactly (they open at 8) 2. used claimyr.com cuz i was desperate after trying for 3 weeks 3. when agent finally picked up, I was SUPER nice and explained calmly they fixed it on the spot and released my funds same day. my advice is dont wait for them to call you back - YOU need to be proactive and get someone on the phone.

•Did you have to wait long after using Claimyr? And did you need to provide them with any info about your claim?

•waited about 3 hours for callback (still WAY better than the days I wasted trying myself). and no they don't need any of your personal claim info - they just connect you with an agent, then you talk directly to unemployment yourself.

•being nice to the agent is KEY. I know we're all frustrated but they deal with angry people all day. when I was super polite the agent went above and beyond to help me.

Anyone else notice that the verification issues got way worse after that big fraud ring was busted in NY last month? I think they're scrutinizing every claim now because of all the identity theft that was happening.

•Yep, I read an article that they uncovered like $1.6 billion in fraud attempts since covid began. Now legitimate claimants are suffering with all these extra verification steps.

The callback system is a JOKE. They told me 5-7 days in early October and I'm still waiting. Had to pawn some stuff just to pay rent. This state doesn't care about working people at all.

After the ID.me verification I hit the same wall. But then I sent a detailed message through the NYSDOL message center every single day for a week. Be specific about your situation and include your contact info in every message. Eventually someone called me back. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these people.

Maya Jackson
•I've been trying the message center but it won't even let me submit anything since my account is pending verification. How did you access it?

Ellie Kim
•oh that sucks. mine at least let me send messages. have you tried using the general contact form on the main ny.gov site instead? sometimes that routes to the right department.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I swear they're deliberately making this process difficult so fewer people collect benefits. My claim was perfectly valid but they put me through weeks of ID verification hell before approving. The system is designed to discourage people from even trying.

•100% this. It's called administrative burden and it's a documented strategy. Make the process so frustrating that people just give up on their benefits.

•im not usually into conspiracy theories but after my experience with NY unemployment I kinda believe this. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to talk to anyone.

Word of advice: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of your ID.me completion, write down the date/time of your video call, names of any reps you talk to, confirmation numbers, etc. I had to prove I completed verification when they claimed they had no record of it. Thank god I had screenshots.

Try reaching out on Twitter to @NYSLabor - sometimes they respond faster there than through official channels. I DM'd them my issue (without sharing personal info) and they escalated my case. Got a call within 48 hours after weeks of nothing.

I just want to say hang in there. The ID.me verification delay happened to me too and I nearly lost hope. It took 23 days total but eventually got resolved and I received all my backpay. The system is terrible but it does eventually work... usually.

I ended up hiring an unemployment advocate after dealing with this for a month. Cost me $200 but they got my benefits approved within a week. Sometimes you need someone who knows how to navigate the system.

The whole unemployment system needs to be rebuilt from scratch. Adding ID.me on top of an already broken system just created a bigger mess. I'm a software engineer and I look at this system and just cringe at how poorly designed the whole thing is.

FYI for anyone dealing with this: there's a NYS unemployment hearing office that can sometimes help with stalled claims. Call 1-855-528-5618 and explain that your ID verification is completed but your claim is stuck. Sometimes they can move things along faster than waiting for a callback.
