NY unemployment payment delayed bc of ID.me verification

I filed for unemployment in March after getting layed off from my warehouse job. I got approved pretty fast and started getting weekly payments direct deposited. Then in May everything stopped. No payments for like 3 weeks. I checked my account online and saw a message about needing to verify my identity through this ID.me thing. I had no idea what to do. Tried calling the unemployment office but kept getting hung up on. I finally found the ID.me website but I'm totally confused about how to upload my documents. I tried using my phone camera but the pictures weren't clear enough I guess? Then I tried to use the video chat option but waited for 2 hours and nobody ever connected. My rent is due next week and I'm down to my last $120. Has anyone dealt with this ID.me verification process? Does it actually work or is this just another way to delay our payments?

Natasha Petrov

I had the EXACT same issue last month! The ID.me thing is legit but its a total pain. What worked for me was using my laptop camera instead of my phone - make sure you have good lighting. And do the verification early in the morning like 7am, the wait times are way shorter. It took about 3 business days after verification for my payments to start coming in again. Hang in there!

Thanks for the advice. I'll try using my roommates laptop tomorrow morning. Did you have to do the video call part or just upload documents?

I had to do both. First upload docs, then video call. But not everyone has to do the video part, depends on if their system can verify your docs automatically.

the trick is definitely doin it early! I tried at 2pm and waited 4 hrs before giving up. Tried again at 6:30am and only waited 20 min 👍

After dealing with that ID.me nightmare for weeks, I finally found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to a live agent. Instead of calling and waiting on hold forever, they did the calling and then connected me once they got someone. Talking to an agent got my payments released within 48 hours! It was the only way I could actually talk to a human at unemployment. Check out their site (claimyr.com) or this video explains it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true. does this actually work or is it some kinda scam?

It's not a scam. They just have a system that calls repeatedly and holds your place in line. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after not getting paid for a month. Best decision I made - talking to a real person solved my problem in minutes.

wait so you PAY someone to call unemployment for you? why would anyone do that when you can just call yourself? 🤡

Have you tried calling NY unemployment lately? I spent 3 weeks calling 40+ times a day and never got through. With claimyr.com I got a call back with an agent in about 2 hours. When you're about to get evicted, it's worth it.

I used this too last week! Worked exactly as described. After weeks of trying to get thru myself, I got an agent in like 90 minutes. My payments started again yesterday.

ID.me is the absolute WORST. Their system flagged me for "suspicious activity" when I was just trying to verify myself. Ended up having to mail in physical copies of my documents to the unemployment office and it took 6 WEEKS to get my benefits back. The whole system is designed to make us give up. Good luck.

For ID.me make sure you have these ready before starting: - Driver's license or state ID (front and back) - Social security card - Birth certificate (if you have it) - A smartphone with a good camera - Good lighting - Stable internet connection If the automatic verification fails, you'll have to do a video call with a "trusted referee" - those wait times can be crazy long. Try really early morning (5-7am) or late night (after 10pm). If all else fails, call the ny unemployment office directly. I know it's nearly impossible to get through, but this is where Claimyr helped me. They called repeatedly until they got through, then connected me with an agent. The agent manually verified my identity and overrode the ID.me requirement in my case. Check out claimyr.com - it saved me weeks of frustration.

Thank you for the detailed info! I have all those documents but the lighting in my apartment sucks. I'll try to set something up by the window tomorrow morning.

I did the video referee thing at 3am and only waited 45 mins. night owls for the win 🦉

its crazy how they just throw this id.me requirement at people with NO WARNING or instructions!!! i just got the same thing yesterday and im freaking out. the government needs to do better, ppl are starving out here waiting for their money 😡

RIGHT?? And they expect everyone to have perfect internet, perfect documents, and endless time to wait in digital queues. Not everyone has access to all that!

My theory is they WANT to make it hard so fewer people get benefits. Save the state money 🤮

Not sure if this helps, but I had issues with ID.me too and ended up having to contact my state representative. They have people who specifically deal with unemployment issues. My rep's office called some special hotline and got my account fixed in 3 days. Worth a try!

I just went through this last week! Make sure your ID isn't expired - that was my issue. Also, their facial recognition technology is trash so be in a room with perfect lighting. And if you wear glasses normally, TAKE THEM OFF for the verification photo even though you wear them in your ID pic. Made no sense but that's what finally worked for me.

I do wear glasses! Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely take them off.

ID.me is a private company that somehow got these government contracts and now we all have to jump through their hoops. The whole thing is ridiculous. I had to wait 4 hours for a video call only to be told my internet connection wasn't good enough and I had to reschedule! 😤

I feel ya. The privatization of government services always seems to make things worse, not better. Just another layer of bureaucracy.

Ugh don't get me started on this! My video kept freezing and they kept making me start over. Took 3 attempts!

If ur really stuck with ID.me and can't get it to work, try going to your local library! That's what I did. The librarian actually helped me set up on their computer with better lighting and internet, and I finally got it to work. Public libraries are lifesavers fr.

This is actually brilliant advice. Libraries often have document scanners too which can be better than taking photos.

after 3 weeks of ID.me hell i finally broke down and used claimyr.com to get an actual human on the phone. agent fixed everything in 10 minutes. wish i had done that first instead of wasting all that time with ID.me garbage. sometimes you gotta spend money to make money i guess 🤷‍♂️

I was skeptical too but I tried it yesterday and it actually worked. Got through to someone who fixed my claim after weeks of getting nowhere.

A tip nobody told me: when uploading pics of ur ID to ID.me, use the scan feature in the Notes app on iPhone instead of just taking a pic. Makes it look like an actual scan and their system accepted it right away.

don't waste your time with the ID.me website, call the NY unemployment fraud department directly at 888-598-2077. They can verify your identity over the phone and it's MUCH faster. Just make sure you have all your docs ready when you call.

I tried that number last week and it just leads to another automated system that eventually disconnects you 🙄

Really? I got through last month. Maybe they changed it...the unemployment system is always changing the rules without telling anyone 😠

Anyone else notice how all these verification problems started happening RIGHT when they were supposed to send out the tax refund adjustments? Seems like they're just delaying payments on purpose 🤔 Probably running out of $ in the unemployment fund.

Call it what you want but the timing is suspicious. This happened during the pandemic too.

I'm an IT guy who had to help my mom with ID.me last month. Here's my advice: 1. Use a computer, not a phone 2. Make sure your browser is updated (Chrome works best) 3. Clear your cookies/cache before starting 4. Use an ethernet connection if possible, not WiFi 5. Have all docs pre-scanned at high resolution 6. If you get stuck in the verification loop, completely log out, wait 24 hours, then try again with a different email address The system is poorly designed but eventually works if you're persistent. If all else fails, getting a human on the phone is your best bet. I've heard good things about claimyr.com for that part.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm definitely not tech savvy so this breakdown really helps.

the logging out and waiting 24hrs advice is key! their system gets stuck in loops sometimes

I found out that if you have an iPhone 8 or newer you can actually create a digital state ID in your Apple Wallet and use that for ID.me verification! Skips the whole document upload process. Wish someone had told me that before I spent days fighting with their system.

Wait really?? That would be so much easier! Is there a tutorial somewhere?

Just google "apple wallet digital ID setup" - only works in some states tho, NY is one of them
