Why won't ID.me accept my documents for NY unemployment verification?

Been trying for 3 weeks to verify my identity through ID.me for my NY unemployment claim. Every time I upload my drivers license and passport, the system says the images are unclear even though they're perfectly clear photos. I've tried different lighting, backgrounds, even borrowed my daughter's phone with a better camera - nothing works! Then when I try the video verification option, it keeps timing out or saying it can't detect my face. I called the NY unemployment office 17 times and nobody can help me bypass this Id.me nightmare. My claim is sitting there approved but I can't get any payments because of this stupid verification issue. My rent is due next week and I'm getting desperate. Has anyone found a way around this ID.me mess or reached a human who can actually help?

Reginald Blackwell

I had the same EXACT problem about 5 months ago. It kept saying my passport was unreadable even though it was literally brand new. What finally worked was using the video chat option but I had to wait 4 hours to talk to someone. Make sure your internet connection is super stable before trying tho.

I tried the video chat option twice. First time it disconnected after 3 hours of waiting, second time the verification specialist couldn't verify me because their system was down. I'm losing my mind!

the video chat is a joke. I waited 5 hours once and then the person didn't even speak english well enough to help me. total waste of time

After wasting 2 weeks with ID.me failures, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual NY unemployment agent on the phone. They waited on hold so I didn't have to, then connected me when a real person answered. The agent was able to manually verify my identity and override the ID.me requirement. Talking to an agent got my payments unlocked so fast - seriously it was the only way I could get this fixed after banging my head against the ID.me wall. Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds fake af... you really expect us to believe there's a magical service that gets you through to unemployment when nobody can get through? ๐Ÿคจ

Not fake at all. I was desperate after trying for weeks. The service just dials repeatedly and waits on hold for you, then calls your phone when they get a human. Saved me literally days of being on hold.

wait hold up - does this actually work or just another unemployment 'hack' that goes nowhere? ny unemployment phones are impossible

It worked for me and my roommate. They just keep dialing until they get through. Think of it like paying someone to stand in line for you. My benefits started coming 3 days after I finally talked to someone.

Bruh I used Claimyr last month when I was in the same boat with ID.me issues. It's worth every penny when ur about to get evicted and need that money ASAP

I HATE ID.ME!!!!!!! It's like they purposely set it up to fail so they don't have to pay us our benefits!! ๐Ÿ˜ก I went through the same nightmare for a month before I finally got it to work. Try using the desktop website instead of mobile - that finally worked for me after 11 failed attempts on my phone.

Okay so here's what worked for me with the ID.me disaster: 1. Use a plain white wall background with very bright lighting 2. Take photos with a DSLR camera if possible (I borrowed my friend's) 3. Upload the documents as PDF scans instead of photos 4. Try using Microsoft Edge browser (weird but it worked when Chrome kept failing) 5. If all else fails, request a referee call through the help section If none of that works, honestly the only solution is to somehow get on the phone with a real unemployment agent. I eventually had to use claimyr.com to get through to someone after 3 weeks of ID.me hell. The agent manually verified my identity and released my payments within 48 hours. The whole system is designed to be difficult - they're hoping people give up so they don't have to pay benefits. Don't let them win!

I've been trying for 4 weeks and none of those tips worked for me ๐Ÿ˜ญ did the Claimyr thing cost a lot?

It's not free but when you're about to miss rent and lose thousands in benefits, it's worth it. Ended up being the best money I spent to get my benefits flowing. My back payments came to $3,800 so it was a no-brainer.

bro id.me is a SCAM. they collect all your personal data and then sell it. google it - they had a huge data breach last year. i refuse to use it and now im stuck without my benefits too.

You actually can bypass it if you can reach a tier 2 agent on the phone. They can manually verify you with different questions. But getting through to them is nearly impossible without using a service like claimyr.com

Have you tried contacting your state representative? I was stuck with ID.me issues for a month, called my assemblyman's office, and they escalated it for me. Had my verification completed within 48 hours after that.

I actually didn't think of this! Do you just call their office? Did you need to provide a lot of documentation to them?

Just called the local office, explained my situation, and they took my info. Had to email them copies of my ID and claim info. They have special contacts at unemployment that can push things through.

its not just you, ID.me is having major technical issues right now. i know someone who works at ny unemployment (not supposed to say this lol) but they told me the whole system is backlogged and even the employees cant fix most verification issues. best bet is to keep trying the video verification early in the morning like 4-5am when less people are using it.

Listen to me carefully. DO NOT give up on this! The ID.me system is deliberately difficult because they know a certain percentage of people will just give up. I failed 14 times before I finally got verified. Use a desktop computer, not mobile. Use high resolution scans (not photos) of your documents. Make sure your internet is stable for video chat. And if all else fails, find a way to talk to a real person at unemployment who can override it - I used claimyr.com and it was worth every penny to finally get my claim processed.

Facts ๐Ÿ’ฏ The system is designed to be frustrating. They know if they make it hard enough, people will just walk away from money they're entitled to.

Is claimyr.com actually reliable? I've been trying to call for weeks but can never get through

Yes it worked for me. They just stay on hold so you don't have to. When they get a human, they call your phone and connect you. Saved me literally days of being on hold.

I've been working in tech for 15 years and ID.me is literally the worst verification system I've ever seen. Their facial recognition algorithm is garbage and their document scanning tech is from like 2010. What finally worked for me was using Firefox (not Chrome), clearing all my cookies, using a laptop (not phone), and making sure I had professional lighting (I used ring lights). If that doesn't work, you HAVE to get through to a human at unemployment who can override it.

Agree 100%! It's like they're using tech from the stone age. Their app crashed on me 8 times before I gave up and used the website.

How do you get through to a human tho? I've called 32 times in 3 days and always get disconnected

I used claimyr.com - they dial repeatedly and wait on hold, then connect you to an agent when they get one. Not free but worth it when you're talking about thousands in benefits being held up.

Try contacting ID.me directly through their support chat. I had the same problem and kept getting rejected, but when I got to their support team and explained the situation, they set up a special video call with a verification specialist who approved me right away. Their regular system sucks but their support team can sometimes help.

The ID.me system for NY unemployment might be the most frustrating thing I've ever dealt with in my life, and I once spent 4 hours at the DMV on the wrong day. ๐Ÿคฌ I feel your pain! What state is your license from? I discovered they have more trouble with out-of-state IDs sometimes.

Statiia Aarssizan

My license is from NY but it's a couple years old. My passport is brand new though, and that's still not working either!

Try this - use ONLY the passport and don't submit the license at all. Sometimes when you provide multiple IDs it confuses their system. Worked for my cousin!

Unpopular opinion maybe, but ID.me worked fine for me first try ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Maybe try a different device? I used my ipad and it went through no problem. Some devices have better cameras/processing.

Not trying to brag, just offering a suggestion that worked for me! iPad Pro specifically if that helps anyone.

After 4 weeks of ID.me rejections, I finally found a workaround! If you request the "ID document verification specialist" option rather than regular verification, you get a different team who are much more helpful. You may need to fail the regular verification 3 times before this option appears though.
