PA UC filing 8 weeks worth of claims - still no payment. What's the typical wait time now?
I've been filing my weekly PA unemployment claims for 8 weeks straight now, but I haven't received a single payment yet. Is this normal? I thought the money would start coming after 2-3 weeks max, but my dashboard just shows all claims as 'processed' with no payments issued. Is the unemployment office super backed up right now? Anyone else experiencing long delays before getting their first payment? My rent is coming due AGAIN and I'm getting really worried... Any idea how much longer I should expect to wait?

sounds like you might have an open issue on ur account... did u check for messages in ur dashboard? sometimes theres an issue they need u to resolve but they dont tell u about it. i had to wait 12 weeks last year bc they needed proof of identity and never sent me a notice!!!!

•Omg really?? I didn't see any messages but I'll check again. Where exactly would I look for these notices? This is so frustrating!

There's definitely something wrong if you've been waiting 8 weeks with no payment. In PA, if your claim is approved and there are no issues, you should receive your first payment 2-3 weeks after filing your initial claim. Have you checked if there are any "open issues" on your claim? Log into your dashboard, go to "Claim Status" and look for any indication of issues or outstanding information needed.

•I just checked and you're right - there's an 'open issue' status that I somehow missed before. It doesn't say what the issue is though... how do I find out what they need from me?

OMG I had the exact same thing happen!! I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting paid and it turned out they needed wage verification but never contacted me about it. Took me 10 weeks to get my first payment 😩

•10 weeks?? I can't wait that long! Did you have to do anything special to get them to finally process your payments?

•Thanks for the inside info! Guess I'll have to try calling then. Been avoiding that because I hear it's impossible to get through.

You definitely have an issue that needs to be resolved before payments will be released. Common open issues include: 1. Identity verification incomplete 2. Work search activities not properly reported 3. Employer dispute about reason for separation 4. Wages need verification 5. Availability questions (must be available for full-time work) You need to contact them ASAP. If you've been filing for 8 weeks without payment, something is holding up your claim that won't resolve automatically. I'd recommend trying Claimyr if you're having trouble reaching someone at PA UC by phone. I was in the same boat and couldn't get through for weeks, but Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes. The service basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 and their website is claimyr.com. It saved me weeks of stress when I had an open issue situation.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! I'll definitely look into Claimyr - at this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved. Do you know if they were able to fix your issue right away once you got through?

have u been doing ur work search requirements? u have to do AT LEAST 2 work search activities EVERY WEEK or they'll flag ur account. happened to my roommate he forgot to log his applications for 1 week and they stopped his payments

•Yes, I've been super careful about that! I do at least 3 activities every week and log them all. Could still be something else though...

This happened to me back in January, and it turned out they needed additional documentation to verify my identity. The system is really messed up because they don't always notify you about these issues! I had to call about 67 times before I got through, but once I did, the representative was able to tell me exactly what was needed. After I uploaded the documents, I got all my back payments within 5 days. Don't give up - keep calling first thing in the morning (7:55 AM) when they open at 8. Monday and Tuesday are the worst days to call, try Wednesday or Thursday instead.

•67 times?? That's insane! But it's good to know that once you got through they were able to help quickly. I'll try calling on Thursday morning. Thank you!

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through to someone? If you're still having trouble, remember that you can also try contacting your state representative's office. They often have liaisons who can help escalate unemployment issues. This has worked for many people when they can't get through directly to UC.

•I've been trying all morning with no luck. That's a great suggestion about contacting my state rep - I hadn't thought of that! I'll give them a call this afternoon if I still can't get through. Thanks!

•FINALLY got through today! Turns out my former employer contested my claim saying I quit (I was laid off). Now I have to wait for a determination interview. At least I know what's happening now!

•Oh wow, that's such a relief that you finally got through! Employer contests are super common unfortunately. Make sure you have all your documentation ready for the determination interview - any emails, texts, or paperwork showing you were laid off and didn't quit. The good news is once you win the appeal (which you should if you were truly laid off), you'll get all those back payments at once. Hang in there!

•That's exactly what happened to me too! My employer tried to claim I was fired for misconduct when I was actually laid off due to budget cuts. The determination interview was nerve-wracking but I had all my paperwork ready - the layoff notice, emails about company restructuring, etc. The interviewer was actually really fair and asked good questions to both me and my former employer. I won the appeal and got 6 weeks of back pay deposited within a week after the decision. Just make sure you answer all their questions honestly and have your timeline of events clear in your head. You've got this!

Wow, reading through all of this really shows how broken the system is right now. I've been dealing with something similar - filed my initial claim about 6 weeks ago and have been getting the runaround. What really helped me was keeping detailed notes of every interaction and every document I submitted. Also, if you do get that determination interview, don't just rely on verbal explanations - email yourself copies of any documentation beforehand so you can reference specific dates and details. The interviewers really seem to appreciate when you're organized and can back up what you're saying. Good luck with your appeal, sounds like you have a solid case if you were actually laid off!

•This is really helpful advice! I'm definitely going to start keeping better records of everything. It's crazy how much documentation you need just to prove you deserve benefits you've already paid into. @Everett Tutum did you have any specific format you used for organizing all your notes? I want to make sure I m'as prepared as possible for this determination interview.

I went through almost the exact same situation last year! Filed for 7 weeks with no payments and was getting super stressed about bills. Like others mentioned, there was definitely an open issue I didn't know about - in my case it was wage verification from a previous employer who had closed down. The key thing is to not give up calling. I know it's frustrating but once you get through to an actual person, they can usually resolve things pretty quickly. Also, make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the issue to be resolved, because you won't get back pay for weeks you didn't file. Sounds like you're on the right track now that you know what the issue is. Good luck with your determination interview!

•Thanks for sharing your experience @Brian Downey! That's really good advice about continuing to file weekly claims even while waiting for the issue to be resolved. I definitely would have made that mistake and stopped filing, thinking there was no point. It's encouraging to hear from people who actually made it through this process successfully. The whole system seems designed to discourage people from getting the benefits they're entitled to, but stories like yours give me hope that persistence pays off. Did you have to provide any special documentation for the wage verification issue, or were they able to verify it through their own systems once they knew what to look for?

I'm going through something similar right now - been waiting 6 weeks with no payments and just found out there's an "open issue" on my claim too. Reading through all these responses has been super helpful! It's crazy how common this seems to be. @Annabel Kimball I'm really glad you finally got through and found out what was holding up your claim. Employer contests are frustrating but at least now you know what you're dealing with. For anyone else in this situation, I'd definitely recommend checking for those open issues in your dashboard like everyone mentioned - I completely missed mine at first too. The system really doesn't make it obvious when there's a problem. Keep us updated on how your determination interview goes!
