Desperate for help with ny unemployment stuck in pending hell since August
I filed my unemployment claim back in August and it's been sitting in pending status for over 3 months now. I managed to speak with a rep in November who promised they would 'escalate' my case and said a decision would be made by the following Monday. That was weeks ago and nothing has changed. I've been certifying every week since August but haven't received a single payment. I've been calling repeatedly every single day but can never get through to an actual person - just constant busy signals or disconnections. At this point I'm falling behind on everything - rent is overdue, utilities sending final notices, and the bank just called about repossessing my vehicle. I'm at my absolute wits end and don't know what else to do. Anyone actually managed to get through this nightmare system and get their benefits?

Same boat dude. Been pending since July and getting desperate. The system is completely broken. I've called over 100 times and either get disconnected or put on hold for 3+ hours only to get hung up on. What a joke.

Have you tried contacting your state representative? I've been thinking about doing that but wasn't sure if it would help at all.

Tried that last week actually. Got a generic email saying they'd 'look into it' but nothing since. Worth a shot tho maybe you'll have better luck

State reps are hit or miss. Mine actually helped but took like 2 weeks to even respond to my email. Try calling their office directly.

After 2 months of waiting and calling every day with no luck, I finally used claimyr.com to get through. It actually worked and connected me to an agent who fixed my pending issue right away. Talking to a real person was the only thing that solved my problem - and now my payments are finally processing. Worth checking out if you're desperate: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

It just keeps calling for you and when an agent picks up it connects to your phone. Saved me from having to redial myself for hours. Got a callback in about 45 mins and the agent fixed my issue same day. My payment hit my account 2 days later after waiting for months!

Not claiming to fix the system - just helps you get through to an actual person who can help. I was skeptical too but was at the end of my rope and it worked for me. My car payment was about to default.

Yeah it worked for me. My benefits were stuck for 9 weeks and the agent I finally talked to fixed it in literally 10 minutes. They just needed to override something in the system.

So frustrating dealing with ny unemployment right now. I had a similar issue and only got it fixed after contacting my state assemblymember's office. They have direct contacts at DOL that regular people don't have access to. Email AND call their office.

Try calling exactly at 8:00am when they open. That's how I finally got through after weeks of trying. Have all your info ready and be super nice to the rep (even though you're frustrated). The person I talked to said my claim had a simple flag on it they were able to remove, but it needed a human to do it. Good luck!

I've tried the 8am trick multiple times! Sometimes I get the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message before it even hits 8:01 😩

This is EXACTLY why I gave up on unemployment and just took a job at Amazon. The warehouse work sucks but at least I'm getting paid something. The unemployment system is designed to make you give up.💯

I've applied for a bunch of jobs but in my area everything is minimum wage and I can't even afford gas to get to the interviews. It's a total catch-22.

this is LITERALLY what they want. make the system so unbearable that you'll take ANY job, even if it pays way less than what you should be getting. the whole system is rigged.

Hang in there! My claim was pending for almost 4 months before I finally got it resolved. What worked for me was emailing unemployment.feedback@labor.ny.gov with "URGENT - Pending Claim Since [date]" in the subject line. Include your name, last 4 of SSN, and phone number in the email. I finally got a call back and they fixed it in one day after that.

Thank you so much, I'll try this right now! Did you include any specific details in the email besides the basic info?

Just a brief explanation of how long you've been waiting and any convos you've had with reps before. Don't write a novel but be clear about the hardship its causing. Hope it works for you!

Look this is what u need to do ASAP: 1) Continue certifying EVERY WEEK no matter what - even without getting paid, this builds your backpay 2) Call your state senator AND assembly member offices - both can help with DOL issues 3) Email unemployment.feedback@labor.ny.gov AND message them on Twitter (they sometimes respond faster there) 4) If you can't get through by calling normally, try claimyr.com - it's a service that keeps calling and gets you connected to a live agent. Talking to an actual person is the ONLY way to fix these issues. A single 15-minute conversation with the right agent can fix problems that have been pending for months. 5) Document EVERYTHING - dates you called, who you spoke to, what they said, confirmation numbers, etc. 6) Check your spam folder and mail daily - sometimes they send time-sensitive documents I went through this nightmare last year. Was pending for 11 weeks and about to be evicted. Finally got through to an agent who fixed it in minutes. All my backpay arrived 3 days later. Don't give up!

This is incredibly helpful - thank you for such a detailed response! I'll start working through this list today. Did you have to provide any special info when you finally talked to the agent?

Just have your SSN, claimant ID if you have one, work history dates, and be ready to verify your identity. The real problem is GETTING to an agent, not what happens once you're talking to one.

is claimyr.com actually legit? never heard of it before

Yeah it is - it just automates the calling process so you don't have to keep redialing. When an agent answers, it connects to your phone. Saved me days of frustration.

I feel for u. The ny unemployment system is straight TRASH. They owe me $7800 in backpay and I got evicted cuz they couldn't get their shit together. Keep fighting!

check your online account for any "action needed" messages! sometimes theres a document you need to upload or a questionare you need to complete and they NEVER tell you about it. they just expect you to log in and see it somehow 🤡

Thanks for this! I just checked and don't see anything in my messages or under the document section. It literally just says "pending" with no other info.

Have you checked if you have a fraud hold? My claim was stuck because someone tried to file in another state using my info. Had to verify my identity with [ID.me](https://ID.me) and then call to get the fraud alert removed. Took FOREVER but was finally fixed.

How do I check for a fraud hold? It doesn't show anything like that on my account page.

You cant see it. Thats the problem. Only a rep can tell you if theres a fraud hold on your acct. Its stupid but thats how they designed the system 🤦♂️

ngl i was literally in tears after tryna deal with this for months. what finlly worked was using claimyr.com to reach a person. was about to lose my apartment and the unemployment agent told me my claim had been stuck because of a "system verification error" whatevrr that means. fixed it in 10 mins and i got paid the next day after MONTHS of nothing. wish i'd known sooner

That's so good to hear! What kind of info did you need to have ready when you finally spoke to someone?

just the basic stuff - ssn, address, last employer info. tbh they already had everything in the system, they just needed to manually review and approve it

My boyfriend went through the EXACT same thing. Turns out they had his birthday wrong in the system by ONE day which flagged his whole claim as potentially fraudulent. 🤬 But you'd never know because they don't tell you why it's pending! Such a broken system.

Not to be that person but have you tried Twitter? I know it sounds dumb but I @-ed NYSLabor with my issue (didn't include any personal info) and they DMed me asking for details. Got a call back 2 days later and they fixed my claim. Worth a shot.

I don't have Twitter but maybe I'll create an account just for this. At this point I'll try anything!

Anyone notice how the people who actually get their problems fixed all managed to speak to a real person? Yet the unemployment office makes it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to reach a human being on the phone. It's almost like... they're doing this on purpose to save money by denying benefits to eligible people who give up fighting the system. 🤔

FACTS. the whole system is designed to make you give up. its not broken, its working EXACTLY as they want it to.

Yep - and for everyone who needs to talk to a person, that claimyr service is clutch. They literally got me through in 35 mins after I spent 3 weeks trying myself.

Honestly the ny unemployment call center is like trying to win the lottery. I called 137 times in one day (yes I counted) and never got through. Finally broke down and used claimyr.com and got a callback with an agent in about an hour. Best decision I made - they found out my claim had some random flag that could only be cleared by a supervisor. Got all my backpay 3 days later.

137 times?! That's insane. I thought my 50-60 calls a day was bad. Did claimyr cost a lot?

it's not free but when you're about to lose your car or apartment it's worth whatever it costs tbh. talking to a human was the only thing that finally fixed my issue.
