NY unemployment claim pending since September - car about to be repossessed
I'm at my wit's end with NY unemployment. My claim has been pending since September 2025 (4 months now!!). I actually managed to speak with someone back in October who told me she was going to send it that Friday 'to have a decision made' - whatever that means. I've been faithfully claiming every week since September but STILL no payments. I literally can't get through to ANYONE about my case. I call ALL DAY, EVERY DAY and it's either busy signals or automated messages before disconnecting. Now I'm seriously behind on bills and about to have my car repossessed! I need this money desperately. Has anyone else waited this long? Any suggestions on how to actually speak to a human being who can help me?

I'm sorry you're going through this. Unfortunately, 4-month pending claims aren't uncommon right now with NYSDOL. When you call, are you trying the main unemployment number or have you tried the alternative line at 888-209-8124? Some people have better luck if they call exactly at 8:00am when they open or after 4:00pm when call volume decreases. Also, have you checked your online account for any alerts or messages requesting additional documentation? Sometimes they need more info but the notification gets lost.

•Thank you for responding! I've been calling the main number constantly. I didn't know about the alternative line - I'll definitely try that. And I've been trying at different times but not specifically right at opening. I've checked my online account obsessively and there's nothing there asking for additional documentation. It just shows 'pending' for every week I've claimed. This is so frustrating!

same thing happened to me last year except mine was stuck for 3 months. turned out they had flagged my account for 'identity verification' but never sent me the notice. you should email them too not just call

•Oh no, that's awful! Did they ever fix it? How did you find out about the identity verification issue? And what email address worked for you? I've tried emailing but haven't gotten any response.

•yea they fixed it eventually. i found out when i FINALLY got someone on the phone. try dol.ui@labor.ny.gov but put your claim # in the subject line. took them like 10 days to answer me but they did eventually

Your situation sounds very stressful, and I completely understand your frustration. Based on my experience working with claimants in similar situations, here's what I'd recommend: 1. Document everything - dates of calls, names of representatives you've spoken with, and any reference numbers. 2. File for hardship consideration. When your claim has been pending over 8 weeks AND you're facing imminent loss of housing, vehicle, or utilities, you qualify for expedited processing. This requires filling out Form UI-640 (Financial Hardship Acceleration Request). 3. Contact your state assembly member or senator's office. They have direct lines to DOL liaisons who can often resolve these issues much faster than calling the general line. 4. Submit a message through your online account specifically mentioning "financial hardship" and "expedited processing request" in the subject line. The repossession threat should qualify you for expedited review, but you need to formally request it.

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I had no idea about the hardship consideration or Form UI-640. I'll definitely look into that immediately. And contacting my state assembly member is a great idea I hadn't thought of. Do you know how long the expedited processing typically takes once requested?

•Expedited processing typically takes 5-10 business days once it's properly submitted and acknowledged. Make sure when you fill out the UI-640 that you attach documentation of your hardship (like the repossession notice). The more documentation you provide, the faster they tend to process it. And when you contact your assembly member, ask specifically for their constituent services staff person who handles unemployment issues - they're usually very helpful!

NYSDOL is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I waited SIX MONTHS last year and only got paid after I threatened to call the governor's office. The whole system is designed to make people give up. They're probably hoping you'll just find a job and stop claiming so they don't have to pay you. It's disgraceful how they treat people who are just trying to get benefits they EARNED and are ENTITLED TO!!!

•While I understand your frustration, threatening the governor's office isn't usually the most effective approach. The system is definitely overloaded, but most delays are due to verification requirements or specific claim issues rather than intentional obstacles. The DOL is required by law to verify eligibility before paying benefits.

After two months of getting nowhere with my claim by calling, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and finally got through to an actual claims specialist who fixed my issue in one call. They basically call NYSDOL for you and connect you when they get through. Cost me a bit but saved me from losing my apartment. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. With your car about to be repossessed, it might be worth it just to get this resolved immediately.

•I've never heard of this service before. You actually had success with it? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Did they need a lot of personal information? How long did it take for them to get you connected to someone?

•Yeah, it worked for me when nothing else did. They don't need much info - just your phone number so they can call you when they get through to NYSDOL. Took about 45 minutes for them to get me connected to a real person who could actually see my claim details. Way better than me spending hours redialing. With your car situation, I'd say it's definitely worth trying since you've already been waiting since September.

•I didn't even know you could go in person anymore! I thought everything was online or by phone now. Do you know which office your cousin went to? I'd definitely make the trip if it means getting this fixed!

My claim was stuck too but i got approved last week thank goodness. What worked for me was sending a message through my ny.gov account every single day asking for status update. i think they got annoyed lol. but seriously try that + the assembly member suggestion someone else gave. also make sure your id.me verification is complete, that holds up a lot of claims.

•Congratulations on finally getting approved! That's interesting about sending messages daily - I've only sent a few over the months. I'll try being more persistent. And yes, I did complete the ID.me verification back in September. Thanks for the suggestions!

Based on what you've described, this sounds like your claim might be stuck in adjudication, which happens when there's a question about your eligibility that needs to be resolved before payments can be released. Since September 2025 is an unusually long wait even by current standards, I recommend taking several actions simultaneously: 1. Follow the advice about contacting your state representative - this is often the fastest route 2. File the UI-640 hardship form as mentioned above 3. If you haven't already, check if there are any issues flagged on your account that require documentation 4. Make sure you've properly completed all quarterly recertifications You mentioned speaking with someone in October who said they would advance your claim. Request the name and ID number of any representative you speak with in the future, and note the date and time of the call. This creates accountability. I hope you get this resolved quickly before your car situation becomes worse.

•Thank you so much for this information! I think you're right about it being stuck in adjudication, although no one has told me why or what information they need. I'll definitely start keeping better records of who I speak with. I've completed all the quarterly recertifications properly, so it's not that. I'm going to try all these suggestions tomorrow. Really appreciate everyone's help!

Just checking back - have you had any luck with any of these suggestions? The car repossession situation is concerning and time-sensitive. If you've tried contacting your assembly member but haven't heard back, sometimes your county's legal aid society can help with unemployment issues as well.

•I've been trying everything! I contacted my assembly member's office yesterday and they took all my information and said they'd reach out to their DOL contact. I also filled out that hardship form and uploaded a copy of the repossession warning. I'm going to try that Claimyr service today because I really can't wait much longer. I'll update once I have news. Thank you all so much for your help during this stressful time.
