NY unemployment agent hung up after 3 hour wait - alternatives to reach NYSDOL?
I'm at my wits end with trying to reach someone at NY unemployment. I waited on hold for 3 hours yesterday only for the agent to hang up as soon as I explained my issue! My claim has been pending for 5 weeks now and I'm getting desperate. My rent is due next week and I'm completely out of savings. Has anyone found a reliable way to actually speak with someone who can help? I've tried calling at different times, using different phones, everything. This is ridiculous!

same thing happened to me TWICE last month. system is broken beyond belief. try calling right when they open at 8am, slightly better chance.

I tried at 8am sharp today and got the 'call volume too high' message immediately. How is that even possible??

There are a few things you can try: 1. Call exactly at 7:58am - their system sometimes starts accepting calls 2 minutes early 2. Email them through your NY.gov account - include your claim ID and a clear description of your issue 3. Contact your state representative's office - they often have direct lines to unemployment offices 4. Check if there are any in-person career centers open near you Pending for 5 weeks usually means there's an identity verification or eligibility issue they need to resolve. Did you get any letters or messages in your online account?

I did get something in my online account about needing additional wage verification but I uploaded all the documents they asked for 3 weeks ago. Nothing has changed since then. I'll try the 7:58am trick tomorrow, thanks!

Just to add to this - identity verification backlogs are really bad right now. I work near a career center and people have been saying it's taking 6-8 weeks for ID verification to clear. Definitely follow up with those documents!

I was in the exact same boat last month, pending for 6 weeks and couldn't reach anyone. What worked for me was using Claimyr - it's a service that basically calls for you and gets you connected to an agent when they answer. Saved me hours of waiting. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE and their site is claimyr.com. The agent I got was able to push through my verification and I got paid within days.

Is this legit? Seems sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call for me. Has anyone else tried this??

I used it about two weeks ago and it did get me through to someone after I tried for DAYS on my own. Agent cleared up my issue in like 10 minutes once I finally got through. Frustrating to pay but less frustrating than being broke I guess.

That's awful! I'm sorry you're dealing with this too. Did you try any of the suggestions above? I'm going to try calling super early tomorrow.

Former NYSDOL employee here. The wage verification backlog is significant right now because they switched to a new verification system in March 2025. When you upload documents, you need to also click the "Document Verification Submitted" button on the dashboard, or it stays in a different queue. Many people miss this step. Also, your pending status might actually be due to an employer protest that you're not aware of. This happens in about 30% of claims that get stuck in pending.

Wait, what? There's a separate button? I definitely didn't click anything like that. Let me check right now... OMG there it is! It says "Document Verification Submitted: No" in tiny text at the bottom of the page. Thank you!!!

It's only visible if you've uploaded documents through the document uploader. If you sent documents another way (like fax or mail), you won't see it. Also, if you're on mobile, it sometimes appears under the "More Actions" dropdown instead of directly on the page.

Everyone here is wasting your time. The ONLY way to get anything fixed with NY unemployment is to physically go to a career center and refuse to leave until someone helps you. I spent 2 months trying phone/email/online and got NOWHERE. Went in person and had my claim fixed in 30 minutes. They WANT you to give up.

100% THIS!!! They deliberately make the phone system unusable. The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up on benefits they're entitled to!!

While I understand the frustration, this isn't entirely accurate. Career centers can help with some issues, but they don't have access to all the same systems as the phone agents. If your issue involves identity verification, adjudication, or appeals, career centers often have to refer you back to the phone system. They're best for application assistance and basic claim issues.

UPDATE: I clicked that verification button the former employee mentioned, and I just got an email saying my claim is being processed! I still need to get through to an agent to find out when I'll actually get paid, but at least something is happening finally. Going to try the 7:58am trick tomorrow morning. Thanks everyone for your help!

Excellent! Once the status changes from pending to processing, you should see payment within 3-5 business days. If not, definitely follow up, but this is a good sign.

I was in the same situation back in February. Waited on hold for 2+ hours multiple days and couldn't get through. I started sending an email every single day (same exact email) until someone responded. Took 12 days of daily emails but finally got a response and my issue was fixed. Sometimes persistence is the only way with NY unemployment. Also, if you haven't already, file a complaint with your state senator's office - they have staff dedicated to unemployment issues.

Thanks for the tip about the state senator's office! I'm going to look into that if I still can't get through by phone. The status is processing now though so hopefully I'm on the right track.

Just wanted to check back - were you able to get through with the early morning calling trick? If not, seriously consider Claimyr. I know someone mentioned being skeptical, but when you're about to miss rent it's worth it. I remember being so frustrated I couldn't sleep at night before I finally got through.

I did try the early morning trick but still couldn't get through. I might try that Claimyr service if I don't see the payment by Monday. At least my claim is processing now though, so it seems to be moving forward!

anybody know if they're still doing those extra $300 supplemental payments? my friend said he got one but i haven't seen anything about it on the website

The NY Supplemental Assistance Program is only available for claims filed before April 15, 2025. It was a temporary program and not everyone qualifies. There's information about it in the Benefits Handbook on the NYSDOL website.

FINAL UPDATE: My payment finally came through today! What worked was: 1) Clicking that verification button the former employee mentioned, and 2) I did end up using the Claimyr service yesterday which got me through to someone who could tell me exactly when to expect payment. Thanks everyone for your help - this community saved me so much stress!

Great news! Glad you got it resolved. For anyone else reading this thread in the future, always make sure to click that verification button after uploading documents - it's a step many people miss.
