Trying to reach NY unemployment for weeks - any alternative phone numbers?
I've been trying to call NY unemployment for almost 3 weeks now. My claim was filed in September but got flagged for some reason and now I'm completely stuck. Every time I call the main number (888-209-8124) it either hangs up on me or puts me on hold for hours then disconnects. I've tried calling at different times - early morning, late afternoon, even tried Thursdays when I heard they might be less busy. Nothing works. My rent is due next week and I'm getting desperate. Does anyone know any alternative phone numbers or extensions that might actually work? Or any tricks to get through? I've tried emailing but just get automated responses saying they'll contact me in 5-7 business days (it's been 16 days). I'm at my wit's end here.

Have you tried calling right at 8:00am when they open? Thats how i finally got through after trying for days. Make sure ur phone is fully charged and keep calling back if it hangs up. It took me like 27 attempts one morning but I finally got in the queue. Just keep at it

Yeah tried that three times now. Wake up at 7:45 and start dialing at 7:59:30 literally. Still get the 'we are experiencing high call volume' message 😡

I had to call 40+ times in a row once. Just keep hitting redial like a maniac until you get through. It's stupid but it worked for me eventually

After spinning my wheels for weeks, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it honestly saved me so much grief. They called ny unemployment for me, waited on hold, then connected me with a live agent once someone picked up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after being stuck for weeks. Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true... is this some kinda scam? 🤔

Not a scam at all! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. They basically just automate the calling and hold process, then forward you when a real person picks up. Saved me hours of hold music and frustration.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying to get thru for almost a month

It worked for me! The best part was not having to listen to that annoying hold music for 3 hours. I got a call when an actual human was on the line.

The whole ny unemployment phone system is designed to be impossible to reach. They don't have enough staff to handle calls so they make it nearly impossible to get through. It's by design not accident. I had to reach out to my state assemblyperson's office to finally get someone to look at my claim after 2 months of trying.

THIS!!! 👆 Contacting your local rep is sometimes the only way. They have special contacts at the DOL.

About 2 weeks from when I first reached out. They have a form on their website specifically for unemployment issues. Worth a shot!

I know a lot of ppl hate twitter but try tweeting at @NYSLabor with your issue (don't include personal info). Sometimes they respond and will DM you for details. Worked for me back in november when i was in the same boat.

Here's what finally worked for me dealing with ny unemployment's broken phone system: First, don't waste time with the main number during peak hours. It's absolutely useless between 9am-3pm. Instead: - Try calling at 7:58am, two minutes before they open. The queue starts forming before 8am officially. - If that fails, try between 4:45-5pm when call volume drops but they're still open. - Use a landline if possible - seems to get priority somehow. - When the automated system asks why you're calling, say "speak to an agent" clearly - don't go through menu options. - If all else fails, I eventually used claimyr.com which basically automated the calling/holding process for me. It was the best money I've spent in months because I finally got through and had my claim fixed. - As a last resort, contact your state representative's office. Hope this helps someone! The system is broken but there are ways through it with persistence.

Thank you for this detailed breakdown! I didn't know about the 7:58am trick, will definitely try that. How was your experience with claimyr? Was it easy to use?

Claimyr was super easy. You just enter your number and they call you once they have an agent on the line. No more endless hold times. I wish I'd found it sooner instead of wasting weeks trying to call myself.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

I get the skepticism, I was the same way. The catch is you pay for the service, but when you're about to lose your apartment because you can't get your benefits, it's worth it. Took me from 3 weeks of failing to one phone call that fixed everything.

this is gonna sound weird but I had success using the spanish option and then just talking in english when the rep got on. the spanish queue is WAY shorter for some reason.

This is kinda genius lol. Did the rep seem annoyed when you spoke English?

Not at all! They said it happens all the time. They just transfered me to an english speaking agent. took like 30 seconds extra

Have u tried the direct number for your specific issue? If ur claim is pending review: 888-209-8124 (then press 1, 2, then 5 when the prompts come up). If it's an existing claim issue: same number but press 1, then 4. DON'T press the buttons they suggest in the automated message cuz those routes go nowhere.

I've tried so many combinations of button presses I feel like I'm trying to unlock a video game achievement 😂 but I haven't tried 1-2-5 specifically. Will give it a shot tomorrow!

After months of struggling with ny unemployment I just gave up and drove to the local DOL office. They didnt let me in (cuz apparently u need an appointment) but the security guard took pity on me and gave me this direct number which actually worked: 888-783-1370. Some kinda special queue. Might be worth a try

Update: I called and it went to a different menu than the main number but still got the high call volume message 😩 Maybe it works better at certain times

It's hit or miss but still better odds than the main line in my experience. Try first thing tomorrow

Not an alternative number but I ended up using claimyr.com cuz I was completely desperate. They basically call on your behalf and sit through the hold times, then connect you when a human picks up. Talking to an agent got my benefits unstuck immediately after WEEKS of trying to get through.

I felt the same way but this one actually worked for me. Not a hack, just a service that does the waiting for you. My benefits were on hold for 6 weeks and got resolved in one call once I actually reached someone.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my friend told me about this. Can confirm it actually works - got my backpay the same week after being stuck for over a month.

Email your state senator AND your assembly person. I'm serious. I tried EVERYTHING to get through for 2 months. Called hundreds of times. Finally emailed my senator's office with my claim info and they had someone from DOL call me within 4 days.

This is lowkey the best advice. My assemblyperson's office got my issue fixed in a week when I couldn't get through for months.
