Applied for NY unemployment 11 months ago, claim says payable but still no money received

I was let go during company downsizing last April and immediately filed for unemployment. When I check my account online, it shows 'payable' status since June, but I haven't received a single payment yet. I've called the unemployment office at least 35 times over these months, and either can't get through or get disconnected after waiting for hours. The few times I actually spoke with someone, they just said my case was 'under review' or that I should 'keep waiting.' I've sent countless emails through their contact portal but only get automated responses. My savings are completely depleted and I'm borrowing money from family just to cover basic bills. Has anyone else experienced this ridiculous delay? What finally worked to get your money released?

Noah Torres

Same boat here! Been waiting since February (9 months) with a 'payable' status. The system is completely broken. I ended up having to move back with my parents at 42 years old because I couldn't afford rent anymore while waiting for these payments that never come.

That's awful! Have you been able to speak with anyone at all? I'm worried I might lose my apartment next.

Only twice in 9 months. Both times they just said "it's in the queue for processing" whatever TF that means 🙄

"in the queue for processing" is their favorite line. they told me that for 7 months until i finally got my money.

After fighting with NY unemployment for MONTHS with the same issues, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual person at unemployment. They made calls for me, waited on hold, then connected me when someone finally picked up. Talking to a real agent finally got my payments released after being stuck for so long. It was the best money I've ever spent considering I got all my back payments within a week after that call. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? I've tried everything to get through to someone and nothing has worked...

Yeah it worked for me! After 5 months of nothing, I had all my payments within a week after using them. The call back feature saved me from those endless hours on hold.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... I'll believe it when I see it

I get the skepticism - I was skeptical too. But it literally just connects you with a live agent. The agent is the one who fixed my claim, not the service itself. The service just got me past the impossible phone system.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to get through for like 6 weeks now

It worked for me 🤷‍♀️ All they do is make the calls for you and then connect you when a human finally answers. Then you talk directly to unemployment yourself.

Ugh the NY unemployment system is total garbage. I had a similar situation last year where my claim said payable for like 4 months but no money ever hit my account. You gotta be super persistent. What finally worked for me was contacting my state assembly member's office. They have special liaisons who can escalate unemployment issues. Worth a try since nothing else is working!

Thanks for the tip - do you still have the contact info for your assembly member? Did it take long after contacting them?

Google "find my NY state assembly member" and put in your address. After I contacted them it took about 2 weeks to get resolved and all my backpay came at once.

I tried the assembly member route and they never got back to me 😫 it's like no one cares

Have you checked if your bank info is entered correctly in the system? I know it sounds obvious but my friend waited 3 months only to discover she had transposed two digits in her account number.

I strongly recommend sending a secure message through your unemployment account portal specifically asking about the status of your backpay. Make sure to use the term "BACKPAY" in your message. Also document EVERYTHING - dates you called, who you spoke with, what they said. This helped me when I finally got someone on the phone who could actually help. I was in your exact situation for 8 months before getting all my money.

This!!! Documentation is key. I had to basically create a spreadsheet of all my interactions before they took me seriously.

I've been keeping notes of all my calls but haven't specifically used the term backpay. Will try that approach, thanks!

The most comprehensive way to solve this kind of NY unemployment issue when you're stuck in limbo: 1. First, try the direct approach by using claimyr.com to get past the phone system. It's designed specifically to connect you with a live agent and has helped thousands of people in your situation. Their system waits on hold so you don't have to and calls you when an agent picks up. 2. Simultaneously, contact your state assembly person AND your state senator (do both). Their offices have special channels to escalate unemployment issues. 3. Make sure you're sending messages through the official portal using specific language - mention "payment release" and "financial hardship" in your messages. 4. Check that all your documents are properly uploaded in the system and that your banking information is 100% accurate. 5. If you've been certifying regularly but not receiving payments, ask specifically about a "payment hold" on your account when you do speak to someone. The system is incredibly backlogged and sometimes claims get stuck in weird technical limbo. Being proactive on multiple fronts is the only way to get unstuck. I went through this exact nightmare last year and only got resolution after taking all these steps simultaneously. Good luck and don't give up - you're entitled to these benefits!

Thank you for this detailed breakdown! I'll try all of these approaches. The claimyr option sounds especially promising since getting through on the phone has been impossible.

No problem! The phone system is deliberately difficult to navigate. Claimyr basically just automated the redial process which is why it works so well. When you do get through, be super specific about the issue - "My claim shows payable status since June but I haven't received any payments" - don't let them just tell you to wait more.

Make sure ur also checking ur mail!!!! I didnt get my money for months and it turned out they sent me some random questionaire that I had to fill out. The stupid part was they never notified me online that they needed more info, only by mail which i wasnt checking cuz everything else was online!

omg YES. this happened to me too! they sent a verification form to my old address even though I updated my address in the system 🤬

That's a good point, I'll check my mail more carefully. The whole system seems designed to make it as difficult as possible to actually receive benefits.

sometimes the payment method gets switched from direct deposit to debit card randomly. happened to me. check if they might have issued you a card that you never received.

Honestly at this point I think ny unemployment is intentionally making it hard to get benefits... They're hoping people just give up 👀

100% this! It's not broken, it's working exactly as designed 🤡

That's why you need to be even more persistent. They count on people giving up.

I waited 10 months and found out there was an identity verification issue that no one bothered to tell me about. Check if there's something like that going on. The only way I found out was by finally connecting with a tier 2 specialist (regular agents couldn't see the problem).

How did you manage to get connected to a tier 2 specialist? The regular agents I've spoken with haven't been helpful at all.

You have to specifically ask to be transferred to a tier 2 or claims specialist. The frontline people can't do much. If they say no, hang up and try again until you get someone who will transfer you.

Anyone here tried filing a complaint with the Department of Labor's Inspector General? I've heard that can sometimes get things moving when all else fails.

Lucas Turner

I did that after 7 months of waiting. Got a generic response saying they'd 'look into it' and then nothing for 2 more months 🙃

The claimyr service actually worked for me after months of frustration. I was about to get evicted when I finally got through to unemployment using their service and got all my backpay released. claimyr.com was the only thing that helped me break through the phone barrier.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

It's not a hack, it's just a calling service. They wait on hold so you don't have to. Once you talk to an actual person at unemployment, things get fixed pretty quickly. The problem is just reaching a human.

Can confirm this works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after 5 months of no payments. Got through to someone and had my money within a week.

Are you SURE you've been certifying every week? Even if you miss one week of certification it can mess up your whole claim. They don't make it clear but you have to keep certifying even if you aren't getting paid.

0 coins

Natalie Wang

Yes, I've been religious about certifying every single week. Haven't missed one.

I'm dealing with the exact same thing! Applied in May 2023, claim shows payable since July, but not a single cent has hit my account. I've called over 50 times. NY unemployment is a joke.
