How long does it take for first NY unemployment payment to arrive after approval?

I lost my job in October when our company did a massive layoff affecting over 100 employees. I filed for unemployment on November 5th and got approved on November 20th. It's now December 4th and I still haven't received any payments. I checked my payment history on the website and it shows my claim is approved with a weekly benefit amount of $494, but no payments have been released yet. I've certified every week since filing. I tried calling the NY unemployment office every day this week but can't get through to anyone - just automated messages saying they're experiencing high call volumes. I've sent messages through the online portal but haven't gotten any responses. My rent is due next week and I'm starting to get really worried. Has anyone experienced this kind of delay? How long did you have to wait for your first payment after being approved? Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

I waited about 2 weeks after approval for my first payment. Have you checked your payment method? Maybe you selected direct deposit but they dont have your correct bank info. Or if you chose the debit card option, the card might still be in the mail? Check your account settings on the unemployment site.

I double checked my direct deposit info and everything is correct. My bank account is the same one I've had for years. I selected direct deposit when I applied. It's just weird that it says approved but no payments processed.

Sometimes they randomly decide to send you the debit card anyway even if you selected direct deposit. Happened to me and a few ppl i know. Look out for a plain white envelope that looks like junk mail!

After struggling with the same issue and not being able to reach anyone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual human at unemployment. Talking to an agent got my payments unstuck within 48 hours after weeks of nothing. It was the only way I could actually talk to a live person. They have this system where they wait on hold for you and then call you when they get an agent. Check out their explanation video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Does this actually work? The ny unemployment phone system is basically designed to prevent you from reaching humans šŸ¤”

I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. It actually worked - got a call back with an agent on the line within a couple hours. My payments started 2 days later. Best decision I made in this whole mess.

another one of these 'miracle solutions'... what's the actual catch here? nobody just solves the unemployment phone system without some kind of angle šŸ™„

The catch is that it's not free, but considering I was about to miss another rent payment, it was worth every penny to finally get my benefits flowing. They basically just have a system that can navigate the phone tree and stay on hold forever so you don't have to.

I tried this last month when my claim was stuck. NGL it worked. Had been trying to call for weeks with no luck, then got through with claimyr.com and had payments hit my account 3 days later.

3 weeks for me after approval. The system is SUPER backed up right now because of all the holiday seasonal layoffs. Just keep certifying every week - when it finally goes through, you'll get all the back weeks at once.

If you were just approved on Nov 20th and have been certifying, you might still be in the waiting period. There's usually a one week waiting period before benefits start. So if you filed Nov 5, got approved Nov 20, the waiting week would be the week after approval, and then payments would start for weeks certified after that. Plus add processing time. But it shouldn't be this long - something might be wrong.

I thought NY waived the waiting week during covid and never brought it back? At least that's what I read on their website.

You're right actually! I forgot they changed that. In that case something is definitely wrong with your claim. You need to talk to a human asap.

have you checked your spam folder for emails from nysdol? sometimes they need additional info and the emails get filtered. also check your online message inbox on the unemployment site, not just payment history.

Just checked both my spam folder and the message center on the unemployment site. Nothing there asking for more information. šŸ˜©

Let me share what I've learned after going through this nightmare multiple times with NY unemployment: ā€¢ First payments can take 2-6 weeks after approval, even though they claim 1-2 weeks ā€¢ The most common delay reasons are identity verification issues, employer disputes, or some random flag on your account ā€¢ The regular phone number is basically useless right now - almost impossible to reach a human ā€¢ Your best options are: 1) Keep certifying weekly (crucial!) 2) Contact your state representative's office - they have special contacts at unemployment 3) Use a service like claimyr.com to get someone on the phone (this saved me when I was 8 weeks without payment) 4) Try calling right when they open at 8:00am or in the last 30 minutes before they close Once you DO get through to someone, they can usually release your payments within 1-3 business days. The system isn't broken per se, it's just impossible to reach anyone when there's a problem. Don't give up - all your approved weeks will be paid eventually!

This ^^^^ perfect advice. Especially contacting your state rep. My assemblyman's office got my claim fixed in 48 hours after I was stuck for a month.

Thank you so much for all this detail. I'll try contacting my state rep tomorrow. And if that doesn't work, I might try that claimyr service. I'm getting desperate at this point.

Seconding the state rep suggestion - they have direct lines to the back office that we normal people can't access.

something similar happened to me. turns out i had a hold on my account because my employer contested my unemployment claim. took forever to resolve. did you leave your job on good terms or was it contentious at all?

It was a mass layoff so I don't think my employer would contest it. They even provided separation paperwork stating it was a layoff due to business restructuring. But who knows what's happening behind the scenes...

even with mass layoffs they sometimes screw up the paperwork. when i finally got someone on the phone they told me my employer had accidentally marked me as 'fired with cause' instead of 'laid off' on some form šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

The system is totally borked right now. I'm on week 6 of waiting for payments after approval. Called 93 times yesterday. NINETY. THREE. TIMES. Never got through. This is criminal how they treat people who are already down on their luck.

Exactly!! How are we supposed to survive while we wait? Do they expect us to just not pay rent or buy food? The whole system is designed to make you give up šŸ˜”

update: finally got through today. apparently there was a "system flag" on my account that no one bothered to tell me about. payments should start flowing tomorrow. keep trying!

Check if your identity verification is complete. With all the fraud lately, they've added extra verification steps. Look for any pending action items in your account.

there's a glitch in the system where sometimes ur approved but theres actually a hidden issue they need to resolve. happened to me & my roommates. u NEED to talk to a human to fix it, online messages don't work. i literally had to call 200+ times before getting thru.

That's insane! I don't have time to make 200 calls a day while I'm job hunting. There has to be a better way.

try calling the 2nd number on their website, not the main one. The alternative number sometimes has shorter wait times. also try calling at exactly 7:58am, right before they officially open.

this is why the ny unemployment system needs a complete overhaul. they operate like its still 1995. my friend in michigan got approved and paid within 10 days with zero issues. meanwhile we're over here begging for scraps like oliver twist šŸ¤®

For real. My cousin in washington state said their system is all automated and actually works. NY be running unemployment on windows 95 and a prayer šŸ’€

This may sound strange but try logging in from a different device or browser. My account was stuck in limbo and wouldn't process payments when I used Chrome, but when I switched to Firefox suddenly everything worked and payments processed within days. Their website has weird compatibility issues.

honestly i gave up on calling and just went to the physical unemployment office in person. waited 3 hours but actually got someone to look at my account and fix the issue. if you're near one of their offices its worth a shot.

They're called New York State Career Centers. There's locations in each borough and throughout the state. Google "NYS Career Center near me" - they can help with unemployment issues in person.
